Why Was Dennis Kucinich Left Out of the ABC Democratic Debate

On Saturday night we officially became the United States of Disney. While Republican candidates railed about the threat of Islamo-fascists, Americans were oblivious that in fact, the greatest treat to our freedom was transpiring right before them – corporate-controlled media, a key component of fascism, used their power to exclude the one candidate from the debates who dares to stand up to them. To “cover” their coup, they ran a silly fluff piece prior to the debate about people who are running for president with no organization behind them and questioned why they would do such a thing other than to massage their own egos.

But the candidate Disney/ABC arbitrarily excluded from the debate is a viable candidate who has hundreds of thousands of supporters and a solid organization in every state. Dennis Kucinich has been campaigning non-stop for over a year with his wife, Elizabeth. He’s on the ballot in almost every state. This isn’t some vanity campaign that the Corporate-controlled media has deliberately tried to make disappear – this is the one candidate who is running for all the right reasons – because he wants to save our country from the takeover of special interests.

What you do over the next few weeks might mean the difference between waking up this time next year in a Disneyland where the majority of Americans will be grateful for the most menial jobs, while the wealthy few get a free ride, or taking our country back from the military/industrial/insurance/media fascists. On the incoming results of the NH primary, on the future of Dennis Kucinich in this presidential election, and on the effect ABC has had on this election.

::::::::

I was hopeful this morning that somehow I might see the kind of poll results that at least Ron Paul has been getting.

As I sit here and watch Mitt Romney ramble and look at the percentages won blinking at the bottom, my fear is being realized…

…All the work that Dennis Kucinich and his supporters put into New Hampshire didn’t pay off.

Even worse, Richardson is now polling higher than Kucinich thanks to the corporatist sham that is ABC.

I now would like to hear from other Americans on how they feel about this election as a Kucinich supporter.

It’s time for a group pow wow. We need to huddle. And please huddle with me on this comments section as we talk about what to do next.

I would do this on the Action Center but I will do it here because outsiders who are not members of the campaign may happen upon this and add their opinion.

Kevin Gosztola goes to Columbia College in Chicago where he is studying to become a documentary filmmaker. When not writing on OpEdNews, he participates in the local campaign in Chicago for Dennis Kucinich for President, the Amnesty International chapter at Columbia, and assists with several political youth groups who face suppression and violation of civil liberties. He currently is enjoying some R&R in South Bend, IN right now, which happens to be the home of the H2 Hummer War Profiteering Plant, a plant that employs so many people who would not be employed if this god forsaken war wasn’t going on.

Peace.

McCain wins GOP contest, Paul within striking distance of Giuliani

Very early results from Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary showed a closer-than-expected race developing between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

With nearly half of precincts reporting, Clinton was showing a slight lead, with 39 percent of the vote to Obama’s 36 percent, but networks still avoided calling the race for either candidate. CNN reported that elections officials were waiting to receive results from some of New Hampshire’s college towns, which are expected to be bastions of Obama support.

Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards lagged far behind with 17 percent, according to news reports.

The GOP race was over almost as soon as it began. CNN called New Hampshire for John McCain at 8:13 p.m., less than a quarter-hour after polls closed. Early returns showed McCain up 37-28 over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

Once polls officially closed at 8 p.m., CNN projected that Edwards would finished in third place, based on exit polls and early returns. The network said the fight between Hillary and Obama was too close to call, an unexpected development after pre-election surveys showed Obama with a healthy lead.

Further down the GOP ticket, Ron Paul was threatening to score a coup against onetime frontrunner Rudy Giuliani. Paul was nipping at the former New York Mayor’s heals with 8 percent of the vote in early returns compared to Giuliani’s 9 percent. At one point fewer than 100 votes separated the two men.

Barack Obama appears poised to cement his lead against rival Hillary Clinton in the race for the Democratic nomination as record numbers of New Hampshire residents turn out to vote in the state’s primary.

Mrs Clinton spent the day fighting to keep her once “inevitable” Democratic candidacy alive as early opinion polls indicated that Mr Obama was comfortably in the lead.

Hillary Clinton staged a remarkable comeback in New Hampshire tonight to slow Barack Obama’s progress towards the Democratic nomination.

With 40% of polling stations delivering results in New Hampshire, Clinton had captured 39% of the vote and Obama 37%.

A first-place finish or even a close second would mark an astonishing turnaround for Clinton, who had seemed almost overwhelmed by the wave of Obamamania that followed his win in the Iowa caucuses five days ago.

No Jobs for the New Economy or the Old By Paul Craig Roberts

Dandelion Salad

By Paul Craig Roberts
January 07, 2008

December did not bring Americans any jobs. To the contrary, the private sector lost 13,000 jobs from the previous month.

If December is a harbinger of the New Year, it is going to be a bad one. The past year, hailed by Republican propagandists and “free trade” economists as proof of globalism’s benefit to Americans, was dismal. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ nonfarm payroll data, the US “super economy” created a miserable 1,054,000 net new jobs during 2007. [BLS Job Numbers, January 4, 2008]

This is not enough to keep up with population growth—even at the rate discouraged Americans, unable to find jobs, are dropping out of the work force—thus the rise in the unemployment rate to 5%.

During the past year, US goods producing industries, continuing a long trend, lost 374,000 jobs.

But making things was the “old economy.” The “new economy” provides services. Last year 1,428,000 private sector service jobs were created.

Are the “free trade” propagandists correct that these service jobs, which are our future, are high-end jobs in research and development, innovation, venture capitalism, information technology, high finance, and science and engineering where the US allegedly has such a shortage of scientists and engineers that it must import them from abroad on work visas?

Not according to the official job statistics.

What occupations provided the 1.4 million service jobs in 2007?

Waitresses and bartenders accounted for 304,200, or 21% of the new service jobs last year and 29% of the net new jobs.

Health care and social assistance accounted for 478,400, or 33% of the new service jobs and 45% of the net new jobs. Ambulatory health care and hospitals accounted for the lion’s share of these jobs.

Professional and business services accounted for 314,000, or 22% of the new service jobs and 30% of the net new jobs. Are these professional and business service jobs the high-end jobs of which “free traders” speak? Decide for yourself. Services to buildings and dwellings account for 53,600 of the jobs. Accounting and bookkeeping services account for 60,500 of the jobs. Architectural and engineering services account for 54,700 of the jobs. Computer systems design and related services account for 70,400 of the jobs. Management consultants account for 88,400 of the jobs.

There were more jobs for hospital orderlies than for architects and engineers. Waitresses and bartenders accounted for as many of last year’s new jobs as the entirety of professional and business services.

Wholesale and retail trade, transportation, and utilities accounted for 181,000 of 2007’s new jobs.

Where are the rest of the new jobs? There are a few scattered among arts, entertainment, and recreation, repair and maintenance, personal and laundry services, and membership associations and organizations.

That’s it.

Keep in mind that the loss of 374,000 goods producing jobs must be subtracted from the 1,428,000 new service jobs to arrive at the net job gain figure. The new service jobs account for more than 100% of the net new jobs.

Keep in mind, too, that many of the new jobs are not filled by American citizens. Many of the engineering and science jobs were filled by foreigners brought in on work visas. Indians and others from abroad can be hired to work in the US for one-third less. The engineering and science jobs that are offshored are paid as little as one-fifth of the US salary. Even foreign nurses are brought in on work visas. No one knows how many of the hospital orderlies are illegals.

What a super new economy Americans have! US job growth has a distinctly third world flavor. A very small percentage of 2007’s new jobs required a college education. Since there are so few jobs for university graduates, how is “education the answer”?

Where is the benefit to Americans of offshoring? The answer is that the benefit is confined to a few highly paid executives who receive multi-million dollar bonuses for increasing profits by offshoring jobs. The rest of the big money went to Wall Street crooks who sold trusting people subprime derivatives.

“Free traders” will assert that the benefit is in low Wal-Mart prices. But the prices are low only because China keeps its currency pegged to the dollar. Thus, the Chinese currency value falls with the dollar. The peg will not continue forever. The dollar has lost 60% of its value against the Euro during the years of the Bush regime. Already China is having to adjust the peg. When the peg goes, Wal-Mart shoppers will think they are in Neiman Marcus.

Just as Americans have been betrayed by “their” leaders in government at all levels, they have been betrayed by business “leaders” on Wall Street and in the corporations. US government and business elites have proven themselves to be Americans’ worst enemies.

Imperialist Propaganda – Second thoughts on Charlie Wilson’s War By Chalmers Johnson

Dandelion Salad

By Chalmers Johnson
ICH
07/01/08 “TomDispatch

I have some personal knowledge of congressmen like Charlie Wilson (D-2nd District, Texas, 1973-1996) because, for close to 20 years, my representative in the 50th Congressional District of California was Republican Randy “Duke” Cunningham, now serving an eight-and-a-half-year prison sentence for soliciting and receiving bribes from defense contractors. Wilson and Cunningham held exactly the same plummy committee assignments in the House of Representatives – the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee plus the Intelligence Oversight Committee – from which they could dole out large sums of public money with little or no input from their colleagues or constituents.

Both men flagrantly abused their positions – but with radically different consequences. Cunningham went to jail because he was too stupid to know how to game the system – retire and become a lobbyist – whereas Wilson received the Central Intelligence Agency Clandestine Service’s first “honored colleague” award ever given to an outsider and went on to become a $360,000 per annum lobbyist for Pakistan.

In a secret ceremony at CIA headquarters on June 9, 1993, James Woolsey, Bill Clinton’s first director of central intelligence and one of the agency’s least competent chiefs in its checkered history, said: “The defeat and breakup of the Soviet empire is one of the great events of world history. There were many heroes in this battle, but to Charlie Wilson must go a special recognition.” One important part of that recognition, studiously avoided by the CIA and most subsequent American writers on the subject, is that Wilson’s activities in Afghanistan led directly to a chain of blowback that culminated in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and led to the United States’ current status as the most hated nation on earth.

On May 25, 2003 (the same month George W. Bush stood on the flight deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln under a White-House-prepared “Mission Accomplished” banner and proclaimed “major combat operations” at an end in Iraq), I published a review in the Los Angeles Times of the book that provides the data for the film Charlie Wilson’s War. The original edition of the book carried the subtitle, “The Extraordinary Story of the Largest Covert Operation in History – the Arming of the Mujahedeen.” The 2007 paperbound edition was subtitled, “The Extraordinary Story of How the Wildest Man in Congress and a Rogue CIA Agent Changed the History of Our Times.” Neither the claim that the Afghan operations were covert nor that they changed history is precisely true.

In my review of the book, I wrote,

“The Central Intelligence Agency has an almost unblemished record of screwing up every ‘secret’ armed intervention it ever undertook. From the overthrow of the Iranian government in 1953 through the rape of Guatemala in 1954, the Bay of Pigs, the failed attempts to assassinate Fidel Castro of Cuba and Patrice Lumumba of the Congo, the Phoenix Program in Vietnam, the ‘secret war’ in Laos, aid to the Greek Colonels who seized power in 1967, the 1973 killing of President Allende in Chile, and Ronald Reagan’s Iran-Contra war against Nicaragua, there is not a single instance in which the Agency’s activities did not prove acutely embarrassing to the United States and devastating to the people being ‘liberated.’ The CIA continues to get away with this bungling primarily because its budget and operations have always been secret and Congress is normally too indifferent to its Constitutional functions to rein in a rogue bureaucracy. Therefore the tale of a purported CIA success story should be of some interest.

“According to the author of Charlie Wilson’s War, the exception to CIA incompetence was the arming between 1979 and 1988 of thousands of Afghan mujahedeen (‘freedom fighters’). The Agency flooded Afghanistan with an incredible array of extremely dangerous weapons and ‘unapologetically mov[ed] to equip and train cadres of high tech holy warriors in the art of waging a war of urban terror against a modern superpower [in this case, the USSR].’

“The author of this glowing account, [the late] George Crile, was a veteran producer for the CBS television news show 60 Minutes and an exuberant Tom Clancy-type enthusiast for the Afghan caper. He argues that the U.S.’s clandestine involvement in Afghanistan was ‘the largest and most successful CIA operation in history,’ ‘the one morally unambiguous crusade of our time,’ and that ‘there was nothing so romantic and exciting as this war against the Evil Empire.’ Crile’s sole measure of success is killed Soviet soldiers (about 15,000), which undermined Soviet morale and contributed to the disintegration of the Soviet Union in the period 1989 to 1991. That’s the successful part.

“However, he never once mentions that the ‘tens of thousands of fanatical Muslim fundamentalists’ the CIA armed are the same people who in 1996 killed nineteen American airmen at Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, bombed our embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998, blew a hole in the side of the USS Cole in Aden Harbor in 2000, and on September 11, 2001, flew hijacked airliners into New York’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon.”

Where Did the “Freedom Fighters” Go?

When I wrote those words I did not know (and could not have imagined) that the actor Tom Hanks had already purchased the rights to the book to make into a film in which he would star as Charlie Wilson, with Julia Roberts as his right-wing Texas girlfriend Joanne Herring, and Philip Seymour Hoffman as Gust Avrakotos, the thuggish CIA operative who helped pull off this caper.

What to make of the film (which I found rather boring and old-fashioned)? It makes the U.S. government look like it is populated by a bunch of whoring, drunken sleazebags, so in that sense it’s accurate enough. But there are a number of things both the book and the film are suppressing. As I noted in 2003,

“For the CIA legally to carry out a covert action, the president must sign off on – that is, authorize – a document called a ‘finding.’ Crile repeatedly says that President Carter signed such a finding ordering the CIA to provide covert backing to the mujahedeen after the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan on December 24, 1979. The truth of the matter is that Carter signed the finding on July 3, 1979, six months before the Soviet invasion, and he did so on the advice of his national security adviser, Zbigniew Brzezinski, in order to try to provoke a Russian incursion. Brzezinski has confirmed this sequence of events in an interview with a French newspaper, and former CIA Director [today Secretary of Defense] Robert Gates says so explicitly in his 1996 memoirs. It may surprise Charlie Wilson to learn that his heroic mujahedeen were manipulated by Washington like so much cannon fodder in order to give the USSR its own Vietnam. The mujahedeen did the job but as subsequent events have made clear, they may not be all that grateful to the United States.”

In the bound galleys of Crile’s book, which his publisher sent to reviewers before publication, there was no mention of any qualifications to his portrait of Wilson as a hero and a patriot. Only in an “epilogue” added to the printed book did Crile quote Wilson as saying, “These things happened. They were glorious and they changed the world. And the people who deserved the credit are the ones who made the sacrifice. And then we f*cked up the endgame.” That’s it. Full stop. Director Mike Nichols, too, ends his movie with Wilson’s final sentence emblazoned across the screen. And then the credits roll.

Neither a reader of Crile nor a viewer of the film based on his book would know that, in talking about the Afghan freedom fighters of the 1980s, we are also talking about the militants of al-Qaeda and the Taliban of the 1990s and 2000s. Amid all the hoopla about Wilson’s going out of channels to engineer secret appropriations of millions of dollars to the guerrillas, the reader or viewer would never suspect that, when the Soviet Union withdrew from Afghanistan in 1989, President George H.W. Bush promptly lost interest in the place and simply walked away, leaving it to descend into one of the most horrific civil wars of modern times.

Among those supporting the Afghans (in addition to the U.S.) was the rich, pious Saudi Arabian economist and civil engineer Osama bin Laden, whom we helped by building up his al-Qaeda base at Khost. When bin Laden and his colleagues decided to get even with us for having been used, he had the support of much of the Islamic world. This disaster was brought about by Wilson’s and the CIA’s incompetence as well as their subversion of all the normal channels of political oversight and democratic accountability within the U.S. government. Charlie Wilson’s war thus turned out to have been just another bloody skirmish in the expansion and consolidation of the American empire – and an imperial presidency. The victors were the military-industrial complex and our massive standing armies. The billion dollars’ worth of weapons Wilson secretly supplied to the guerrillas ended up being turned on ourselves.

An Imperialist Comedy

Which brings us back to the movie and its reception here. (It has been banned in Afghanistan.) One of the severe side effects of imperialism in its advanced stages seems to be that it rots the brains of the imperialists. They start believing that they are the bearers of civilization, the bringers of light to “primitives” and “savages” (largely so identified because of their resistance to being “liberated” by us), the carriers of science and modernity to backward peoples, beacons and guides for citizens of the “underdeveloped world.”

Such attitudes are normally accompanied by a racist ideology that proclaims the intrinsic superiority and right to rule of “white” Caucasians. Innumerable European colonialists saw the hand of God in Darwin’s discovery of evolution, so long as it was understood that He had programmed the outcome of evolution in favor of late Victorian Englishmen. (For an excellent short book on this subject, check out Sven Lindquist’s Exterminate All the Brutes.)

When imperialist activities produce unmentionable outcomes, such as those well known to anyone paying attention to Afghanistan since about 1990, then ideological thinking kicks in. The horror story is suppressed, or reinterpreted as something benign or ridiculous (a “comedy”), or simply curtailed before the denouement becomes obvious. Thus, for example, Melissa Roddy, a Los Angeles filmmaker with inside information from the Charlie Wilson production team, notes that the film’s happy ending came about because Tom Hanks, a co-producer as well as the leading actor, “just can’t deal with this 9/11 thing.”

Similarly, we are told by another insider reviewer, James Rocchi, that the scenario, as originally written by Aaron Sorkin of West Wing fame, included the following line for Avrakotos: “Remember I said this: There’s going to be a day when we’re gonna look back and say ‘I’d give anything if [Afghanistan] were overrun with Godless communists.’” This line is nowhere to be found in the final film.

Today there is ample evidence that, when it comes to the freedom of women, education levels, governmental services, relations among different ethnic groups, and quality of life – all were infinitely better under the Afghan communists than under the Taliban or the present government of President Hamid Karzai, which evidently controls little beyond the country’s capital, Kabul. But Americans don’t want to know that – and certainly they get no indication of it from Charlie Wilson’s War, either the book or the film.

The tendency of imperialism to rot the brains of imperialists is particularly on display in the recent spate of articles and reviews in mainstream American newspapers about the film. For reasons not entirely clear, an overwhelming majority of reviewers concluded that Charlie Wilson’s War is a “feel-good comedy” (Lou Lumenick in the New York Post), a “high-living, hard-partying jihad” (A.O. Scott in the New York Times), “a sharp-edged, wickedly funny comedy” (Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times). Stephen Hunter in the Washington Post wrote of “Mike Nichols’s laff-a-minute chronicle of the congressman’s crusade to ram funding through the House Appropriations Committee to supply arms to the Afghan mujahedeen”; while, in a piece entitled “Sex! Drugs! (and Maybe a Little War),” Richard L. Berke in the New York Times offered this stamp of approval: “You can make a movie that is relevant and intelligent – and palatable to a mass audience – if its political pills are sugar-coated.”

When I saw the film, there was only a guffaw or two from the audience over the raunchy sex and sexism of “good-time Charlie,” but certainly no laff-a-minute. The root of this approach to the film probably lies with Tom Hanks himself, who, according to Berke, called it “a serious comedy.” A few reviews qualified their endorsement of Charlie Wilson’s War, but still came down on the side of good old American fun. Rick Groen in the Toronto Globe and Mail, for instance, thought that it was “best to enjoy Charlie Wilson’s War as a thoroughly engaging comedy. Just don’t think about it too much or you may choke on your popcorn.” Peter Rainer noted in the Christian Science Monitor that the “Comedic Charlie Wilson’s War has a tragic punch line.” These reviewers were thundering along with the herd while still trying to maintain a bit of self-respect.

The handful of truly critical reviews have come mostly from blogs and little-known Hollywood fanzines – with one major exception, Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times. In an essay subtitledCharlie Wilson’s War celebrates events that came back to haunt Americans,” Turan called the film “an unintentionally sobering narrative of American shouldn’t-have” and added that it was “glib rather than witty, one of those films that comes off as being more pleased with itself than it has a right to be.”

My own view is that if Charlie Wilson’s War is a comedy, it’s the kind that goes over well with a roomful of louts in a college fraternity house. Simply put, it is imperialist propaganda, and the tragedy is that four-and-a-half years after we invaded Iraq and destroyed it, such dangerously misleading nonsense is still being offered to a gullible public. The most accurate review so far is James Rocchi’s summing-up for Cinematical.com: “Charlie Wilson’s War isn’t just bad history; it feels even more malign, like a conscious attempt to induce amnesia.”

Declassified letter exposes Democratic Party complicity in CIA torture By Joe Kay

Last week, the CIA declassified a February 2003 letter from Democratic Representative Jane Harman of California discussing the planned destruction of videotapes depicting the interrogation and torture of prisoners held by the CIA.

Harman requested that the CIA release the letter in order to show her supposed criticism of the agency’s plans to destroy the evidence. In a statement on the letter, Harman said that it “makes clear my concern about possible destruction of any tapes.” In fact, the letter only underscores the fact that the Democratic Party was aware of and supported the CIA’s secret policy of torture.

Democrats knew of plans to destroy evidence of interrogations, but made no serious attempt to stop it or inform the American people. Indeed, Harman’s “concern” was in effect an indication to the CIA that the Democrats would not challenge a decision to destroy the tapes and would not expose the agency if it did so.

The videotapes, involving hundreds of hours of interrogation of Abu Zubaydah and Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, were secretly destroyed in November 2005. Their destruction was only publicly disclosed last month, though several Democrats had been made aware of the action at least a year ago.

Judeocentrism – Is It Always The Jew? by Fred Stopsky

Anyone who has spent time on MySpace has encountered those claiming Jews are responsible for just about every evil in the world. They believe 17,000,000 Jews in the world far surpass in cunning and intelligence the other Six Billion and manipulate and control policy. Few realize this approach to understanding human behavior was popularized in the early years of this century when the Russian Secret Police in 1903 wrote a wild propaganda piece entitled, “The Protocols Of The Elders of Zion” which described secret meetings in graveyards by Rabbis where plots were made to overthrow the world and subject Christians to the evil control of Jews. Henry Ford, a well-known anti-Semite, published this trash in his newspaper, the Dearborn Gazette.

I have received several comments which list names of Jews in the Bush administration who favored a war with Iraq to prove it was the Israel Lobby which got America into the mess. Of course, the list leaves out George Bush, Dick Cheney, Don Rumsfeld, Condi Rice, Colin Powell and the 90% of State Department employees who are not Jewish. It postulates that George-I Am The Decider-Bush was pushed into something he really didn’t want to do. When Don Rumsfeld was asked about the Jewish Lobby theory, he responded: ” I suppose the implication of that is the president and the vice president and myself and Colin Powell just fell off a turnip truck to take these jobs.” Oh, Don, we know the decision was that of Bush, Cheney and yourself.

To blame the Jew has been rather common in American politics for over a hundred years. Of course, in the 19th and early 20th centuries it was “blame the Pope” and his evil Catholic Church. After Al Smith, the first Catholic to run for the presidency got slaughtered in normally Democratic districts and lost, he quipped, “I just sent a telegram to the Pope, it says, unpack your bag.” If you wish to access anti-Catholic images simply go to Harper’s Weekly.

I have been told America entered WWII because of the Jews. Really. The State Department of the 1930s was viciously anti-semitic and would not even allow German Jewish children to enter the nation as refugees. No action was taken during WWII to save Jews. In 1940, Joseph Kennedy (father of John and a real anti-semite and pro Hitler ambassador to England until recalled by FDR) told Hollywood producers, most of whom were Jewish, “to stop making anti-Nazi pictures or using the film medium to promote or show sympathy to the cause of the democracies” and they complied until American entered WWII. In fact, until the post WWII film, “Gentlemen’s Agreement” came out, not a single Hollywood picture portrayed the lives or issues facing Jews in America.

I continue receiving communications about “Jewish bankers” like the Rothschilds who somehow control American finance. I check the top 50 banks in the world, I believe Lehman Brothers and maybe one or two others are Jewish banks on the list. Very few Jews prior to WWII held important positions in leading industries such as steel, automobiles, oil, etc.. due to anti-semitism.

Of course, I continually receive comments about Israel and how American created that nation and gave it atomic weapons. Really. It was the British government which got control of Palestine after WWI. (For the record, there was no nation of Palestine, it was a province of the Ottoman Empire and after the UN partition, Jordan assumed control of what some of you claim is Palestine). Strange, I have never heard anyone complain about Jordan taking control and subjecting Palestinians to second class citizenship. The United States sent NO arms to Israel(aside from a shipload of weapons gotten together by Jewish gangsters like Lansky, Bugsy Siegel and Mickey Cohen). President Truman hesitated about recognizing Israel because Secretary of State Marshall threatened to resign if he did, but Harry finally made the decision. In the 1950s, President Eisenhower made Israel, France and England end their war against Egypt and severely tongue lashed the group. France provided the technology for Israel’s atomic energy program, not the US. Obviously, American Jews had scant influence up until the 1970s on US foreign policy.

Do American Jews influence foreign policy? Of course, they do. American Armenians just got Congress to try dealing with the Armenian genocide by Turkey– the resolution was opposed by the “Israel Lobby.” Among the most arm twisting lobbies in Washington D.C. these days is the Communist China lobby. Irish Americans controlled policy toward Ireland for over a hundred years, and nearly got American into wars with Canada. The Polish lobby has been influential for half a century. The anti-Castro Cuban Lobby has virtually dictated our nation’s policy toward Cuba for half a century. Talk about influencing foreign policy!! I dare any presidential candidate to talk common sense about Cuba!

I realize it is difficult for those who believe the Rothschild family still runs banking to even conceive modern banking and the relative unimportance of Jews in it as a group. Paul Wolfowitz was appointed head of the World Bank not because he was Jewish, but because of close ties with Bush. Do Jews exert influence? Yes, as a group they have high education levels, high income (but most Jews are simply middle class people) and are politically active for the simple reason if you have been persecuted for a few thousand years, you depend upon government to protect your rights.

As a Jew and as an American and as a Human, I am a complex individual. How about a list of nations where Jews have NO power– India, China, Indonesia, Iran, just about all of Africa (except there is a Jewish community in South Africa) just about most of Latin America, and most of eastern Europe. Not much power in Scandinavia, Germany, Turkey, Pakistan, etc…

My last point is how sick and tired I am of receiving comments that Jews are:

Communists, Liberals, Bankers, corporate leaders, neo-conservatives, Libertarians, radicals, anti-Christian, anti-Muslim, and so on. Put these all together and you have one real weird person.

Oh, for the record, there are about six million Jews among the 300,000,00 people in this country.

A biting story from Wisconsin. A returned war veteran from Iraq was at a holiday party when he began telling people about the horrible things soldiers did to Iraqis. Brian Johnson got mad and said: “Shut Up. My dad was in Vietnam, and those guys didn’t tell stories like that.” They got into a a fight and Ramon Alega bit off Johnson’s ear. The sad aspect of the story is the inability of Vietnam war veterans to articulate what happened to them in a horrible war.

The Kurdish Workers Party is now switching from fighting in mountains to blowing up things in cities. The Turkish government says it will only grant pardons to those who didn’t fight against Turkish soldiers. Brilliant. The Kurdish rebels say they will cease fighting if all are granted a pardon. Figure it out Turkish government, no pardon and no end to bombings.

The situation in Kenya is horrific. Over 300 dead in an election stolen by President Kibaki. Bishiop Tutu of South Africa finally got him to agree on a new election if a recount of votes proves there was manipulation. One problem facing a recount is that records might already have been destroyed. How about getting Bishop Tutu (Nobel Prize Winner) to mediate the Israel-Palestinian conflict?

Speaking of bishops, the Bishop of Rochester in England came out blasting Muslims in his nation for creating zones in which it was dangerous for a Christian to venture. he blames the current problems in his country on multiculturalism, the government’s lack of “a moral and spiritual vision” because it dose not help the Church of England and gives all that aid to the Muslims. Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg, asked the obvious question– could you please cite proof of in which areas it is dangerous for Christians to venture?

They are celebrating independence day in Myanmar and the government has sent in thousands of police and soldiers to maintain security. Notice how everyone has forgotten the brutality of the Burmese junta? It goes to prove if you are brutal in suppressing dissident voices the world will move on to the next topic. Oh, just to keep out the media, the price for a license to access satellite TV has been raised from $6 a year to $1000. See how easy it is to suppress information n the modern world?

Oh, China has now made illegal the distribution of “vulgar” video and audio products. The government is concerned over language that is “absolutely erotic.” And, those half nude images really drive the censors wild. I am confused, why are they worried about half-nudity? Or, are they saying it is OK to be completely nude?

Prime Minister Olmert of Israel finally is cracking down on building new housing on the West Bank and in eastern Jerusalem. His decision infuriated right wingers and MP Arye Eklad urged west bank settlers to “violate the law and build.” He blasted the Prime Minister for being an anti-Zionist and, listen to this, named as the chief culprit, George Bush! He claims Bush “is leading us to catastrophe.” Somehow, I just don’t think Palestinians view Bush as being on their side.

I listened to the Republicans go at one another. I loved the crack by John McCain when Romney claimed to be a man who believed in change–”I agree, you are a man of change.” Of course, referring to the times Mitt changes his policies in order to get votes. I guess Hillary just can’t shake the baggage issue. She simply misread the mood of Americans– they want honesty, they want action. This nation will insist on a national health insurance and they certainly don’t want any of those silly Republican ideas about tax deductions for medical care. I will still argue that Medicare is the most cost effective health system in this nation and it provides all of us in it the freedom to choose our doctors. I have a hunch Obama will win by about 9% more votes than Hillary with Edwards close behind. When will Bill Richardson please go home.

A new anti-Muslim party is emerging in Germany based on the “Pro-Cologne” movement which is fighting the construction of a large new mosque in the city of Cologne. The party is called, “Pro NRW”(Pro-North Rhine Westphalia). For some reason the building of this mosque has created an uproar among Germans. The main complaint is about the tall minarets. Funny, when in Germany I saw a lot of churches with tall spires.

The people of Okinawa have been “hosts” to American forces since 1945. Originally the soldiers came as an occupation force, then remained for the Korean War. For some reason they are still present and when the Okinawa government suggested they move their bases, our Secretary of Defense Gates became upset and said we had agreements and they had a right to remain. Would someone please tell me why Japan needs US troops? Against whom are they protecting the Japanese people? Me thinks, it it is time to withdraw all US forces from Japan and allow the people of Okinawa the right to decide who protects them.
