Netanyahu: Iran Is the Terrorist ‘Mother Regime’

Propaganda alert

excerpt from: Iran Is the Terrorist ‘Mother Regime’

by Bret Stephens, Wall Street Journal, 24 January 2009

[...]

Rather than looking for solutions from Egypt, however, Mr. Netanyahu’s gaze is intently fixed on Iran, a subject that consumes at least half of the interview. Iran is the “mother regime” both of Hamas, against which Israel has just fought a war, as well as of Hezbollah, against which it fought its last war in 2006. Together, he says, they are more than simply fingers of Tehran’s influence on the shores of the Mediterranean.

“The arming of Iran with nuclear weapons may portend an irreversible process, because these regimes assume a kind of immortality,” he says, arguing that the threat of a nuclear Iran poses a much graver danger to the world than the current economic crisis. “[This] will pose an existential threat to Israel directly, but also could give a nuclear umbrella to these terrorist bases.”

How to stop that from happening? Mr. Netanyahu mentions that he has met with Barack Obama both in Israel and Washington, and that the question of Iran “loomed large in both conversations.” I ask: Did Mr. Obama seem to him appropriately sober-minded about the subject? “Very much so, very much so,” Mr. Netanyahu stresses. “He [Mr. Obama] spoke of his plans to engage Iran in order to impress upon them that they have to stop the nuclear program. What I said to him was, what counts is not the method but the goal.”

It’s easy to believe that Mr. Netanyahu, of all people, must be wishing President Obama well: If diplomacy with Iran fails and the U.S. does not resort to military force, it would almost certainly fall to Mr. Netanyahu to decide whether Israel will go it alone in a strike. (In a separate interview earlier that day, a senior military official assured me that a successful strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities is well within Israel’s capabilities.)

Syria will be first rogue state to get Barack Obama charm offensive

Barack Obama will seek to befriend Syria and enlist the rogue state’s help in fighting terrorism, in what US officials see as the first test of his plans to talk to America’s enemies.

by Tim Shipman, Sunday Telegraph, 25 January 2009

Diplomats and Democrats in Washington have confirmed that Mr Obama wants to persuade the Syrian leader, Bashar Assad, to cooperate with the West, in the hope that he will loosen his country’s close ties to Iran, forcing Tehran to the negotiating table as well.

During his presidential campaign, Mr Obama pledged to speak to states like Iran and Cuba without imposing preconditions as the Bush administration did on any contacts.

But in conversations with allies since his election, Mr Obama has made clear that he believes the key to improving the political situation in the Middle East is to peel Syria away from its longstanding alliance with Iran, rather than to immediately start negotiations with Tehran over its nuclear weapons programme.

Chomsky: No change coming with Obama

Press TV

The following is a Press TV interview with respected American author, political analyst and world-renowned linguist, Professor Noam Chomsky.

Press TV: Professor Chomsky, we better start with Pakistan. The White House not commenting on the killings of people [in cross-border drone attacks from Afghanistan into Pakistan]. Richard Holbrooke, someone whom you’ve written about in the context of Yugoslavia, is the man [President Barack] Obama has chosen to solve the situation.

Chomsky: Well, it was pretty clear that Obama would accept the Bush doctrine that the United States can bomb Pakistan freely, and there have been many case which are quite serious.

There has been for example a great deal of chaos and fighting in Bajaur province, which is a adjacent to Afghanistan and tribal leaders- others there- have traced it to the bombing of a madrassa school which killed 80 to 95 people, which I don’t think was even reported in the United states, it was reported in the Pakistani press of course.

The author of the article reporting it, a well-known nuclear physicist, Pervez Hoodbhoy pointed out at the time that this kind of massacre will of course engender terror and reactions, which will even threaten the state of Pakistan. And that has been what is happening. We are now seeing more of it.

The first message of the Pakistani government to General [David] Petraeus, the American General when he took command of the region was that they did not want any more bombings in Pakistan.

Actually, the first message to the new Obama administration by President [Hamid] Karzai of Afghanistan was the same, that he wanted no more bombings. He also said that he wants a timetable for the withdrawal of the foreign troops, US and other troops, from Afghanistan. That was of course just ignored.

Congressional office admits:

Obama stimulus plan won’t meet job-creation target

By Patrick Martin
http://www.wsws.org
26 January 2009

The Obama administration and congressional Democrats began the final push for passage of an $825 billion economic stimulus plan this weekend, but an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) conceded that the measure would pump far less money into the economy over the next two years and create far fewer jobs than promised.

Obama devoted his first Saturday morning radio address to the legislation, which is to be voted on in the House of Representatives Wednesday. Senate consideration would begin after House passage, with the first action scheduled for Monday, February 2.

Over a dozen university occupations for Palestine

Students across the country are holding occupations and sit ins in solidarity with Gaza. SOAS shut down a MOD exhibition on their campus whilst students at LSE declared victory after seven days when the university agreed to all of their demands.

They are followed by others at King’s College,Essex, Warwick, Sussex, Birmingham and over 80 Oxford University students have occupied the historic Bodleian building to demand that the university releases a statement condemning the attack on Gaza and cancel the lecture series at Balliol College inaugurated by Israeli war criminal Shimon Peres. There are also early reports of occupations at Manchester Met, Newcastle, Leeds and Cambridge [Pics] universities.

In Yorkshire, students have occupied a building at Leeds University whilst the Bradford AGM voted to give the university the weekend to comply with demands to support the Palestinians, or expect action on Monday.

Israeli Embassy protest – January 17th 2009 (The Yellow Army)

TheRuralRebel | 23.01.2009 12:04

TheRuralRebel

In protest of Israel’s atrocities in Gaza and UK sales of arms to Israel, around 300-400 people assembled in front of the Israeli Embassy gates in Kensington, London. The police were far more than prepared for the demonstration in what became a sea of yellow jacketed officers. A diminished crowd of about 150 people were forcefully dispersed and escorted from Kensington by the MET and Transport Police.

Thain was robbed! Or, why a–holes are always in charge, by Greg Palast

Dandelion Salad

by Greg Palast

1.24.09

John Thain is the guy that looks like a Clark Kent doll you saw grinning from page one of your paper Friday morning. Thain was just fired by Bank of America because the square-jawed executive demanded a $30 million bonus after losing $5 billion in just three months at the bank’s Merrill Lynch unit. In addition, Thain spent over a million dollars redecorating his office while, at the same time, the U.S. Treasury was bailing out his company with billions in aid. Thain’s office re-do included the installation of a $35,000 toilet bowl.

Thain was robbed. He shouldn’t have been fired; he should have gotten a $60 million bonus — and Obama should immediately hire him as Secretary of the Treasury in place of that tax-dodging lightweight that’s been nominated, Timothy Geithner.

Here’s the facts, ma’am. …

For the remainder of the story on Thain’s toilet and the economic crisis, go to www.SuicideGirls.com. Palast’s investigative reports for BBC TV, Rolling Stone and others can be seen at www.GregPalast.com
