The United States is facing what has been described as its “most serious instance of domestic terrorism” to date, the FBI has warned.

by Alex Spillius, Daily Telegraph, 14 March 2009

Quote:
Officials say a second generation of Somali immigrants is becoming increasingly radicalised and could pose a growing threat to security. The warnings come amid the revelation that 20 young Somali American men who returned to their war-torn homeland have been radicalised by a group linked to al-Qaeda.

The FBI is urgently examining links between the youths, who are all American citizens, and al-Shabaab, an Islamist group fighting in the country’s long-running conflict.

Somali radicals ‘importing terror to UK’ say intelligence analysts

by Jonathan Rugman, Times, 16 February 2009

Dozens of Islamic extremists have returned to Britain from terror training camps in Somalia, the British security services believe.

Intelligence analysts are worried that they may attempt to launch attacks in this country or use the kudos from having trained and fought in Somalia to try to attract new recruits. The issue was raised by Jonathan Evans, the head of MI5, in his first interview last month.

In the US, the outgoing head of the CIA, Michael Hayden, has said that Ethiopia’s invasion of Somalia in late 2006 “catalysed” expatriate Somalis around the world.

An investigation for Channel 4 News, to be broadcast tonight, also reveals that a suicide bomber who grew up in Ealing is thought to have blown himself up in an attack in Somalia that killed more than 20 soldiers.

The incident is the first reported case involving a Somali based in Britain and will add to pressure on Scotland Yard and the Home Office to tackle the problem within the Somali community, which, at about 250,000 people, is the biggest in Europe.

“Pakistan rightly gets the most attention in terms of external threats,” a senior counter-terrorism source said. “But we believe we should focus more on the Horn of Africa and Somalia in particular.”

How Israel Gives Jews a Bad Name By Saul Landau

Dandelion Salad

By Saul Landau
http://www.counterpunch.org
March 13/15, 2009

The State That Tolerates No Criticism

Most Jews I know get little pleasure from the existence of Israel; just the opposite. They feel disgusted by the behavior of their tribal kin toward Palestinians. This antipathy doesn’t concern Israel’s right to exist, a phony argument still maintained by hard line Zionists. Israel exists, period. Most of the world recognizes that. Anyone wanting to eliminate it belongs in the loony bin or prison.

Israelis have just elected a right wing majority. The number three vote-getting party, Yisrael Beytenu led by Avigdor Lieberman, will occupy a strong place in the new government. Lieberman will become a Minister in the Netanyahu Cabinet. Last year, Lieberman rammed through Israel’s Central Election Committee a ban on Arab political parties. The Israeli Supreme Court ruled the ban unconstitutional before the recent election. Lieberman also demanded the Knesset expel Arab Members. He went further. If Arab citizens of Israel don’t sign oaths of loyalty to Israel, they should have their citizenship revoked.

[...]

My grandfather taught me, growing up during the Holocaust, that Jewish tradition teaches each person to strive to become a pillar of ethics, learn the law and behave so as to answer to God for transgressions – not to rulers of a so-called Jewish state.

Ironically, in the name of all Jews, Foxman and colleagues in AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) and other Israeli lobby groups along with right wing and centrist political parties in Israel invoke the Holocaust to justify the very behavior embodied by Holocaust initiators. Israel calls itself a Jewish state. Yet, one fifth of Israel’s population is non-Jewish. I don’t belong to that state and despise its policies of constant war and occupation.

Reading Lenin in Modern Rome By Gaither Stewart

A little bit of Leninism for breakfast gives you the strength of a hundred camels in the courtyard. (My adaptation of a Paul Bowles’ Arab adage)

And then this, straight out of the horse’s mouth:

“It is more pleasant and useful to go through the experience of the revolution than to write about it.” (Vladimir Lenin)

(Rome) Leftists like to cite Lenin. To quote Marx is to delve into the theory of Socialism/Communism. But Lenin is another cup of tea. You get into Lenin and you’re already in revolution. When you read Lenin’s The State and Revolution, which contains the core of Leninist thought, you are no longer in the world of socio-economic theory. This powerful text offers insights into Leninist policies and elaborated Lenin’s interpretation of Marxism, above all the class conflict, but also the crushing of the bourgeois state and the establishment and role of the dictatorship of the proletariat.

Thus, reading Lenin today is to enter the realm of the overthrow of Capitalism and the transition from Capitalism to Communism. Fantasy? Not many years ago such words would have seemed like maniacal ravings. But that was before the shit hit the fan in the bourgeois capitalist world, au début right smack in its heart on Wall Street. The images of capitalism hanging itself or digging its own grave seemed to many the theoretical wishful thinking of a handful of radical eccentrics. But today? Lenin’s writings now read like contemporary political thought. The younger Trotsky noted in his autobiography, My Life, that “Lenin, although he was firmly entrenched in the present, was always trying to pierce the veil of the future.” That quality, I find, underlines the difference between Lenin and many of his contemporaries and marks him as the true revolutionary.

excerpt from: Bin Laden: Israeli Gaza offensive is a ‘holocaust’

Haaretz, 14 March 2009

Quote:
Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has called Israel’s offensive on Gaza a holocaust and blamed Arab leaders for not doing enough to stop the fighting in his latest audio recording aired on Al-Jazeera on Saturday.Bin Laden accused some Arab countries of collaborating with Israel on the offensive earlier this year that killed some 1,300 Palestinians in Gaza. He did not name any specific Arab countries in the brief audio recording.”It is clear that some Arab leaders have plotted with the Zionist-crusader coalition against our (Muslim) people,” the speaker, whose voice sounded like earlier messages from bin-Laden, said in the recording.

Bin Laden calls for infiltration of Jordan as way to ‘liberate al-Aksa’

by Maya Spitzer, Jerusalem Post, 17 March 2009

Quote:
Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden’s latest audio message has targeted Jordan for the first time, calling on his supporters to infiltrate the country in order to “liberate al-Aksa,” according to the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

[...]

He declares it “a mandatory religious duty” for Muslims “to cut off [the] heads” of the leaders of nations bordering Israel, including Jordan, who have suppressed the mujahadeen.

Bin Laden added that a victory in Iraq would be the impetus for the Islamists to infiltrate Jordan, enter the West Bank, and from there “the rest of Palestine,” [...]
