From Complicity to Contempt A Book Review
From Complicity to Contempt by war veteran Timothy Gatto from South Carolina is a group of articles he wrote for his blog from September 2005 to January 2007. He is honest. He is sincere. He shows courage in speaking out against oppression. And yet he comes off more of a veteran against having fought the state of South Carolina than fighting the United States . And he seems to confuse the two. In other words, he is a typically intelligent Liberal reactionary who thinks he sees the big picture from a small state, but rather sees the small picture in a big country.
Despite the fact that he gets most things right; the corruption of the odious Bushies, the Patriot Act, the war, etc. He makes sweeping generalizations about religion, lumps all rightwing talk show hosts together as if they are monolithic in thought or non-thought, and he seeks to underestimate the power of Liberals in the Bush era.
First off, having been one who worked to get Ralph Nader in the White House 3 times, I can tell you that the Liberal democrats did everything in their power to keep him off of many states, including my own which I saw first hand. They have been a powerhouse in that era. In regards to his lumping Micheal Savage in with Rush the Golfer, Hannity, Beck , and the other Fox mouthpieces, Mr. Gatto would do well to read the recent New Yorker feature on Savage called ”The Party of One ”. I have listened to Savage constantly for 7 years straight and can say that Mr. Gatto calling him an idiot is downright inaccurate. And I am a socialist! Of course I have differences with Savage. But an idiot he is not by any means.
In regards to Theology and the paradox and quandry of the Abrahamic tripartide he does not understand how people can really believe such things in the 21st century. Answer: because it changes their lives. Answer again: because the Bible is dark and foreboding Literature with great import. As a pacifist, it seems to me that Mr. Gatto has the same ignorance about the Bible as those idiots who are killing each over it have. As an evangelical Christian I would not sit across the table from a Muslim and kill him or her as this writer categorically states. Nor would they kill me. I have many Muslim friends and we don’t kill each other over tables. But we do eat Gyros over them. Thank you very much, Mr. Gatto and please pass the humus if you would be so kind. He listened to his atheist friends growing up Catholic, and convinced him to disregard matters of faith he says, fine. I always knew that my atheists friends were full of shit and disregarded their illogical rantings, for reason dictates that you cannot posit a negative, there is no proof of the nihil. Even science is moving in the direction of antimatter discoveries. And where you have antimatter you have questions of Kant’s nuemological realm beyond the 5 senses.
So, do I recommend this book despite some of these gaffs? YES. Why? Because it is an excellent chronicle of an era that had very few dissenters that were brave and consistent enough to care and do something about it. This book is a snapshot of consistent dissent in an age of fear. Let’s hope that Timothy Gatto stays in dissent, remains a faithful contrarian. I wish him Godspeed.
