PER: Effects Of The Inter-Oceanic Highway On The Eco-System

Avatar is real: the fictional planet of Pandora exists in South and Central America, and the Na’vi peoples are being displaced and killed right now. The names are different, but the facts are almost the same.

In the next generation, Central and South America will be the battlefields for rich countries to fight over natural resources, which they need to continue growing and keeping up to their consumerist, excessive ways of life.

The last pristine, virgin forests on Earth will be taken over by rich and powerful military armies, working on behalf of the interests of multinational corporations.

It’s happening already in the tropical forests and mountains of the continent. Mining, oil, tourism, real estate and other corporations are trying to take over the indigenous peoples’ ancestral lands, in complicity with the local puppet governments.

The story goes that Churchill offered a woman 5 million pounds to sleep with him. She hedged and said they would have to discuss terms. Then he offered her 5 pounds. “Sir!” she said. “What sort of woman do you think I am?” “Madam,” he replied, “We’ve already established that. Now we’re just haggling over the price.”

The same might be said of President Obama’s health care bill, which was sold out to corporate interests early on. The insurance lobby had its way with the bill; after that they were just haggling over the price. The “public option” was so watered down in congressional deal-making that it finally disappeared altogether.

Filmmaker Rodrigo Vazquez spent his childhood summers on his father’s farm in Paraguay.

For his film, This Land is Our Land, he returned to Paraguay to see how the election of Bishop Fernando Lugo in April 2008 and his attempts to redress six decades of corruption, poverty and human rights abuses have impacted the country’s landless peasants.

Welcome to the beginning of a project which is likely to extend over a two-year-period, the serialization of a book entitled “The 15% Solution: A political History of American Fascism, 2001-2022.”  Under the pseudonym Jonathan Westminster, it is purportedly published in the year 2048 on the 25th Anniversary of Constitution Democracy in the Re-United States. It was actually published in 1996 by the Thomas Jefferson Press, located in Port Jefferson, NY. The copyright is held by the Press.  We begin with the Preface.

Preface

“For every problem there is one solution which is simple, neat, and wrong.”      H. L. Mencken

“Posterity: What the Founding Fathers wouldn’t have talked about so glowingly if they had known we were going to be it.”

In comes Mr. Brown, this year’s version of Mitt Romney to save the day for the corporatist forces of evil and mayhem! Not that single-payer or the original public option, for that matter were ever seriously considered. The conciliator in chief is already squeaking and murmuring that the reform er belated Christmas present to the for profit health ’system’, needs to be scaled back! Where was this sixty votes when the vile Dubya was in power? I suppose Ben Nelson, Mark Pryor, Evan Bayh, Blanche Lincoln and all the rest of them, probably went along with a lot of his agenda (they are more ideological allies of someone like Bush than a lefty or progressive). But, then again, I don’t have much use for terms like a so-called liberal or progressive Democrat, or a Blue Dog or conservative one.

Eight is (More Than) Enough: End the Wars!

I read about how outraged President Obama was with the Supreme Court ruling that allowed corporate money into the election campaigns without limits. I too am outraged. This country, for decades has been run by special interests for special interests, the public be damned. That includes Barack Obama’s Administration and the current Congress.

Obama isn’t guiltless when it comes to taking corporate money. He received huge donations from Goldman Sachs, Morgan-Stanley, AIG and others. Corporate money was fine by him as long as he was getting the lions share. Now the Democrats have to worry about all that corporate money going to the business friendly GOP.
