Banned books

Cultures that endure carve out a protected space for those who question and challenge national myths. Artists, writers, poets, activists, journalists, philosophers, dancers, musicians, actors, directors and renegades must be tolerated if a culture is to be pulled back from disaster. Members of this intellectual and artistic class, who are usually not welcome in the stultifying halls of academia where mediocrity is triumphant, serve as prophets. They are dismissed, or labeled by the power elites as subversive, because they do not embrace collective self-worship. They force us to confront unexamined assumptions, ones that, if not challenged, lead to destruction.

  2. May I quote Buddha, i.e. that “Desire is the source of all pain,” and obviously in a materialistic society driven by desire for goods, services, and money, there is a lot of pain, which is dealt with generally by narcotizing the pain with more materialism. So it becomes a vicious cycle in the circle of rebirths.

  3. Yes! And then we have Isaac betrayed by his father, who turned a blind eye when asked to sacrifice his own son.

We send young men off to die while never giving them a chance to heal their childhood wounds or find out WHO THEY ARE.

This society gives up WAY TOO MUCH HUMAN potential.

Resistance brings joy, no matter how fleeting – and the people who have never felt it have lost their birth RIGHT. It isn’t the pursuit of “happiness” that is going to pull us through. It’s allowing that ability to express one’s true self creatively that will do it.

Sometimes, all that takes these days is a can of spray paint or a cardboard sign written on w/magic marker …

    Make art, not war …..
Again, it’s up to US. It really is … there is no magic pill to cure plutonomy.

    • Virginia , Alice Miller has missed the entire Abe-Isaac story. read the account in the Koran and the Sufi mystics view. It says that at the binding of Ishmael/Isaac that him and his father were both “impregnated with divine love”. this whole drama was the archetype to Christ and His Father in heaven and the sacrificial death motif.

Chapter 3 of Kierkegaard’s “Fear and Trembling” deals with this teleological suspension of the ethical in order to transcend mere morality that is an invention of and by the human finite mind. There is no correlation to war in that story at all. In fact, it is so profound that even Shakespeare could not understand it or write about it. This is what makes Abraham the father of faith, and King Lear a self possessed figure until he sees the truth at the very end of the play when he gives his famous gilded butterfly soliloquy in prison with Cordelia.
