With biting wit and deep insight, award-winning journalist Walter M. Brasch probes deep into the Bush–Cheney Administration and extracts the truth from seven years of American history.

“When most Americans and the mainstream media were accepting whatever they were told by the Bush Administration, Walter Brasch was meticulously peeling away the incompetence, deceit, corruption and, most of all, their cavalier attitude to the Constitution. Sinking the Ship of State reveals the heavy price that our country has paid for their arrogance, autocracy, and avarice.” — (Jim Hightower, syndicated columnist; author of There’s Nothing in the Middle of the Road but Yellow Stripes and Dead Armadillos and Thieves in High Places)

Introduction

President Andrew Jackson called the banking cartel a “hydra-headed monster eating the flesh of the common man.” New York Mayor John Hylan, writing in the 1920s, called it a “giant octopus” that “seizes in its long and powerful tentacles our executive officers, our legislative bodies, our schools, our courts, our newspapers, and every agency created for the public protection.” The debt spider has devoured farms, homes and whole countries that have become trapped in its web…

Failed States

by Noam Chomsky

Chomsky's Failed States

order here

The United States has repeatedly asserted its right to intervene militarily against “failed states” around the globe. In this much-anticipated follow-up to his international bestseller Hegemony or Survival, Noam Chomsky turns the tables, showing how the United States itself shares features with other failed states — suffering from a severe “democratic deficit,” eschewing domestic and international law, and adopting policies that increasingly endanger its own citizens and the world. Exploring the latest developments in U.S. foreign and domestic policy, Chomsky reveals Washington’s plans to further militarize the planet, greatly increasing the risks of nuclear war. He also assesses the dangerous consequences of the occupation of Iraq; documents Washington’s self-exemption from international norms, including the Geneva conventions and the Kyoto Protocol; and examines how the U.S. electoral system is designed to eliminate genuine political alternatives, impeding any meaningful democracy.

America’s “War On Terrorism”

by Michel Chossudovsky

Michel Chossudovsky

order here

In this new and expanded edition of Michel Chossudovsky’s 2002 best seller, the author blows away the smokescreen put up by the mainstream media, that 9/11 was an attack on America by “Islamic terrorists”. Through meticulous research, the author uncovers a military-intelligence ploy behind the September 11 attacks, and the cover-up and complicity of key members of the Bush Administration.

The expanded edition, which includes twelve new chapters focuses on the use of 9/11 as a pretext for the invasion and illegal occupation of Iraq, the militarisation of justice and law enforcement and the repeal of democracy.

On January 28, 1986, NASA launched shuttle mission 51-L, despite concerns about the freezing weather that had arrived in Florida overnight. Seventy-three seconds into the launch, Challenger exploded, killing seven people and leaving the world to wonder and mourn.

Six months earlier, Richard C. Cook, the lead resource analyst at NASA for the solid rocket boosters, had written a memo that warned of catastrophic failure, based on meetings with headquarters engineers. The warnings were ignored by NASA officials, who refused to stop shuttle flights despite escalating concerns within the agency and Morton Thiokol, the booster contractor.

You’re Not Stupid! Get The Truth: A Brief on the Bush Presidency

by William Cox

You're Not Stupid by William Cox

order here

You’re Not Stupid! Get The Truth: A Brief on the Bush Presidency is an unabashed wake up call to what President Bush and his “neocons” are doing to the country. From a hyper-focus on testing children that ignores real problems with public education – Bush’s own home state of Texas has an abysmal graduation and college attendance rate, partly in due to pressures to have substandard achievers drop out rather than bring down test scores – to the lies surrounding the war in Iraq, to how much warning the Bush administration had before the 9/11 attacks, to the overwhelming array of tax favoritism for the wealthy in Bush fiscal policy and more, You’re Not Stupid! Get The Truth bluntly exposes lies as lies. A brutally honest, well-researched book that debunks common myths and sharply warns readers to be vigilant against being manipulated, and strongly recommended reading for all eligible voters. — Midwest Book Reviews

How the hell did we get here? Empire Burlesque tells the tale, giving us the secret history of the Bush Regime – the backroom deals, the covert ops, and the monstrous betrayals of American principles that have gone down behind the pious rhetoric and sugary deceptions.

He won’t offer you anything fancy . . . Does American Christianity promote the true Gospel? Is the body of Christ reflecting the glorious church of which the New Testament speaks? Is the church reflecting the image of Christ to the world? In an intense study of the state of today’s church, author Shawn Grandstaff has taken a stand, for he is tired of being a hypocrite! Aware that all too often Christians find themselves clothed in a shallow, self-absorbed Christianity, Grandstaff has laid out a plan of action that will remove the tattered robes of the world and put back on Christ-centered love. Readers will find solace, healing, and a renewed vigor to discard the robes of the world and seek comfort in the loving arms of God, living true Naked Christianity in a Demoralized Democracy.

The New Americanism

by Dr. Steven Jonas

In his book The New Americanism, Dr. Jonas presents his proposal for that “new vision and mission” for the Democratic Party that so many, for so many years, have been urging it to find.  A new vision and mission are obviously needed with increasing urgency as with increasing speed and determination the Georgites drive our nation towards frank theocratic fascism, and the Democratic Party flounders around in trying, and so far failing, to find an effective voice for the 2008 election.  Dr. Jonas finds the needed vision and mission in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.  ”The New Americanism: How the Democratic Party Can Win the Presidency is available from Amazon.com (go to “Books;” enter the full title) and BarnesandNoble.com (same).

He is also the author of The 15% Solution: A Political History of American Fascism, 2001-2022.  Under the pseudonym “Jonathan Westminster” this book was originally published in 1996.  It was republished with a New Introduction in 2004.  Under Georgite rule, the “fictional non-fiction” scenario of this work of “future history” is, most unfortunately, becoming all too real.  Now almost day-by-day too many of Dr. Jonas’ predictions are coming true.  Both versions are available at www.amazon.com and www.barnesandnoble.com (go to “Books;” enter the title).  The 2004 edition is also available at www.xlibris.com (click on “Bookstore,” then “Search” with the title).

In his most provocative and caustically funny book yet, Greg Palast, author of the national bestseller The Best Democracy Money Can Buy, once again gives us the straight scoop on the stories that Big Media won’t report. Digging up reams of documents marked “secret” and “confidential,” Palast provides the latest lowdown on Bush’s secret plans to seize Iraq’s oil, the fix planned for the 2008 election, who drowned New Orleans, and the horror and the humor of the War on Terror. With diligent detective work, moral outrage, and a keen sense of the absurd, Palast takes on the “armed and dangerous clowns that rule us” as only he can.

Oil, Food and the Coming Crisis in Agriculture

order here

As a farmer, albeit part time, I am concerned about rising fuel prices, and other costs of production, nearly all energy related. In this book author Dale Allen Pfeiffer reviews possible consequences of the coming worldwide peaking of the production of conventional oil. These consequences may be dire and not limited to transportation, also affecting agriculture as we know it. Industrial agriculture with it’s vast corporate interests tends to be very fuel inefficient, which includes all sorts of things such as tilling, fertilizer, perticides, harvesting, processing, transportation to markets, and more. When peak oil hits food may become much more expensive.

In each woman he pursues, memories of his lost love, Jeannette, beckon. This Asheville, unlike Thomas Wolfe’s, is willing to welcome her long lost son, or perhaps, as Tsalagi shaman and Merrimon Avenue garage mechanic Patrick Barefoot informs Killian, “You can’t get away from anything . . . Review by Tara Lohan on AlterNet: Seem smarter than you are, read The Progressives’ Handbook.

Sleep in today, Heather Wokusch has done your homework for you.

Wokusch spent two years researching and writing the two-book series The Progressives’ Handbook, which details the Bush Administration’s record on key issues.

And yes, there are handbooks for everything these days. But if you already know all there is to know about cheese and how to be a hipster than I suggest you check out Wokusch’s books. They are part encyclopedia and part self-defense manual.

The books provide the basic background information and pithy quotes about U.S. weapons of mass destruction, women’s issues, education, mainstream media, elections and voting, the environment, and foreign policy.

What sets the books above the heap of other politically-inspired manuals is Wokusch’s writing style. She is punchy but not preachy and her ability to synthesize information, giving readers everything they need to know and leaving out the rest, is invaluable.

The best part of the Progressives’ Handbook is that it aims to make you a better progressive — which is the point of handbooks, right? If you’ve read the books and happen to find yourself visiting your conservative relatives or seated at a dinner party next to a right-winger who wants to talk shop, you will be armed with the best ammunition.

You may feel strongly about one or many of the issues covered in the Progressives’ Handbook, but after reading Wokusch you will actually be able to talk your walk.

The End of America: Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot

by Naomi Wolf

naomi wolf book

This latest offering from best-selling author Wolf, The Beauty Myth, is a harbinger of an age that may finally see the patriarchal realm of political discourse usurped. Here is Wolf’s compellingly and cogently argued political argument for civil rights, not women’s rights. She contributes this call to action to a canon that from Plato and Aristotle to Hobbes and Locke and forward, with a few exceptions (e.g., Hannah Arendt), has been largely populated by men. Wolf’s work is actually closer to the agitated, passionate polemics of Emma Goldman than the ponderous, philosophical musings of Arendt. Readers will appreciate her energy and urgency as she warns we are living through a dangerous “fascist shift” brought about by the Bush administration. Her chapters outline the “Ten Steps to Fascism” citing historical corollaries (as well as the pigs in Orwell’s Animal Farm), with headings like “Invoke an External and Internal Threat,” “Establish Secret Prisons,” and “Target Key Individuals.” In other words, fascism can exist without dictatorship. Her book’s publication through a small press in Vermont that is committed to “the politics and practice of sustainable living” rather than through a large trade house is itself a political act. Highly recommended for all collections.

  3. I read Kucinich’s book and found it very inspiring. At no point does Kucinich whine or bemoan his humble roots…he shares a great story that I was sorry to see end.

Will he write a sequel? I hope so.

  4. That’s pretty good, Erkd. Wish I could say the same. Buying books isn’t in my budget and I don’t drive so don’t get to the library like I used to do (all the time). There are so many more to add to this list, however, the news posting takes up most of my awake hours.

  9. Wow, what a list Lo!

You’ve already got me glued to this blog half the day (or night as the case may be~) trying to keep up with the awesome rapid-fire devastating news which you ferret out from all sources, but now your gonna make me read books? Yilkes!

    (Do people still read books?)

This looks like a ‘killer’ reading list (pun semi-intended). Looks like I’m gonna have to screw my brain back on and actually scrutinize some written words on paper…

(But wait, what’s that, a SCIENCE section? Mommy can I please go look at the cool science experiments, my eyes hurt from reading about horrible wars! I promise I’ll do my homework later!)

Thank you Lo, you are like a dynamo, if I owned a ‘newscorp’ you’d be super-high-paid journalist in chief!

  10. Thanks so much, PTTV, you are too kind, my friend. :)

I studied science (animal behavior/biology) in college so have a high interest in it.

Well, the book list here is far from complete. There are so many more I need to post here. I also feel strongly about supporting writers for which my blog would be nothing without them. I don’t make any money from blogging, so I can’t afford to pay any of my writers, so the least I can do to help the writers is to promote their books.

Big thanks go to Mark Lysgaard who suggested that I promote his book which got me to start this page. He also sent me a copy of his book which I can’t wait to read. It’s a book of political poetry and from his blogs that I’ve read he writes some very good poetry. Tells it like it is, too.
