1. Metropolis. Fritz Lang’s 1927 German Expressionistic futuristic masterpiece. The Commies loved it. The Nazis loved it. Both the religious and secularists loved it. One wild ride into the politico-socio matrix.

It is one of those pesky little paradoxes in history that to the chagrin of many, shatters stereotypes, kicks ass, and takes names. Yes, you guessed it: the radical who becomes more radical after becoming a legit follower of Jesus. The names are impressive and they add up to confront any honest thinking progressive as to one hell of a challenge and begs the question: what in the world is really going on here?

Sherlock Holmes said, “When one tries to rise above nature, one is liable to fall below it.” Utopian thought has always been dangerous, and just in case you didn’t know it we are coming face to face with one whopper looming over the horizon in this century. It began with what was considered a relatively harmless ideology known as “Transhumanism” and has been exponentially accelerating toward what Vernor Vinge calls a technological singularity, or “the prediction wall”.

St. Francis of Assisi

Image by Randy OHC via Flickr

No sooner had the Vatican announced a third world Pope, when the first world well fed comfortable horny de jour writers of our time led a full force attack à la the politics of genitalia. Why golly gee, you would think that these writers never missed a meal in their life, the way they placed sexual issues above the Vatican’s choice of a man who took the name of St. Francis that could possibly help at least relieve some of the brutal and senseless poverty on this planet.

I first got turned on to the work of E. M. Cioran when a life long Atheist friend of mine was vacationing in Paris and stumbled on his work in a bookstore there. My friend was a brilliant guy and a librarian, and thought that he had exhausted all of the works of every Atheist worth his or her salt until he read Cioran. (more…)

In the next few weeks there will be a whole litany of accusations against the Papacy of this retiring Pope, most of which I agree with. We all know what they are. There is no need to waste ink on them. Instead I would like to present the unique contributions of his Papacy that will probably go unnoticed even by the most astute Catholic scholars. So here goes.

Well, old honest Abe is back in vogue. The recent plethora of documentaries, movies, and books about him are all polishing up his halo once again. While they are putting the final coat of wax on the man and his presidency I have only three words to say: not so fast.

What would you say if you heard that a ruler of a country suspended its entire constitution, its entire bill of rights, forced a draft, and jailed every major writer and editor who disagreed with him? (more…)

Rocket Kirchner: Kierkegaard Reconsidered

Soren Kierkegaard studying

Soren Kierkegaard studying (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

“… in spite of or in defiance of the whole of existence he wills to be himself with it, to take it along, almost defying his torment. For to hope in the possibility of help, not to speak of help by virtue of the absurd, that for God all things are possible – no, that he will not do. And as for seeking help from any other – no, that he will not do for all the world; rather than seek help he would prefer to be himself – with all the tortures of hell, if so it must be.”

It is a known fact that there are more suicides and more people depressed during the holidays than in any other time of the year. Many of these people are just alone in society. Others are so overwhelmed with the sing-songy giddiness around them that it is just pure torture for them. The real irony is is that this is the exact opposite of what the holidays should be. This quandary reminds me of the famous quote by Hugo Von Hofmannsthal, “The weariness of long forgotten peoples hangs heavy on my eyelids”.

Good Friday - Crucifixion of Jesus BW

Image by Bo Insogna via Flickr

St. Paul said that “the Jews are the enemies of the gospel”. He ought to know, for he was its fiercest enemy before his road to Damascus conversion. All through history they have been the enemies attacking it, seeking to stop it in one way or another. First by bloody persecution not only in the death of Jesus, but killing their own fellow Jews that believed in Him as their Messiah who was called the Prince of Peace. Love was never on the preconceived idea of Israel’s Messianic agenda. And it sure as hell (by the way they are acting) isn’t on their agenda today either.

Face of the Anti-War Movement 16

Have you ever noticed the paradox of an activist whose heart palpitates for the starving children of Africa to whom they have never met, all the while grinding his or her heel into the faces of the people that are around them to whom they know? They shout louder than all the other activists. They carry more signs, write more letters to newspapers, shoot out more e-mails, and make more phone calls to their elected representatives, and call into more talk radio shows every chance they get. But they do not know how to love their neighbor as themselves and it really shows. They lack the milk of human kindness. In a word, this kind of activist is spiritually dead.
