Fist raised high

Hundreds of striking coal miners marched 285 miles from Asturias on Spain’s north coast to the capital city of Madrid, where thousands of other workers joined them as they entered the city. Hundreds of thousands of others came to show solidarity as the miners’ three-week trek ended with a massive demonstration on July 11.

Thousands of striking miners also came on buses to join the protests. They felt the support from so many of their fellow workers, who have suffered from government-imposed austerity measures of higher taxes, layoffs, wage cuts and reduced crucial services and who face a new round of cutbacks.

Drone Killings a Stain Upon Our Nation

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) has opposed the use of combat drones against suspected terrorists abroad since the first known attack in 2004. In February 2006, he asked the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency to suspend the use of Predator drones citing the “high toll in innocent civilian life.” In the 111th Congress, he sponsored a bill to prohibit the extrajudicial killing of U.S. citizens abroad in response to revelations that the Administration included U.S. citizens on its targeted killing list. Chris Hedges, a writer for The Nation and former New York Times reporter, spoke at the Left Forum’s closing plenary on March 18 in New York City. [DS added the links.]

As someone who was among the thousands of youth on Sept. 17 when the occupation of Zuccotti Park began; as someone who attended some of the early General Assemblies prior to that historic day; as someone who was arrested as part of the OWS Martin Luther King Day actions; as someone who is currently involved in the continuing occupation of Union Square in preparation for the May 1st General Strike, I must say loudly and clearly that you, Chris Hedges, do not speak for me.

this shop is controlled by its workers

There has been much media talk about “socialism” since the 2008 financial near-meltdown.

From the left, Lawrence O’Donnell, the liberal MSNBC commentator who has replaced Keith Olbermann, calls himself a “socialist.” Film-maker Michael Moore’s film, “Capitalism: A Love Story,” the ninth-top-grossing documentary in history, tears capitalism apart, but stops far short of describing real socialist change.

Capitalism isn't working

To more and more people in the world, it is abundantly clear that the capitalist system doesn’t work. At least not for the majority. The system that generates war after war, that allows millions in the U.S. to be unemployed, millions more to go without health care, while fomenting racism, sexism, and anti-lesbian/gay/bi/trans/queer bigotry, and offering no future to the next generation is a disaster for the workers and oppressed people inside the U.S. and worse yet for the rest of the world.

Workers Of The World Unite!

Following are excerpts from a talk by Caleb T. Maupin on Nov. 13 at the national Workers World Party conference in New York City. He is a member of the WWP Cleveland branch and Fight Imperialism, Stand Together.

Karl Marx was not the first socialist. He was not the first person to envision a communist future, one without the oppression and degradation people face.
