The Death of Truth by Chris Hedges (Interview with Julian Assange)

Free Julian Assange, London 16 january 2013

This interview is a joint project of Truthdig and The Nation magazine.

LONDON—A tiny tip of the vast subterranean network of governmental and intelligence agencies from around the world dedicated to destroying WikiLeaks and arresting its founder, Julian Assange, appears outside the red-brick building on Hans Crescent Street that houses the Ecuadorean Embassy. Assange, the world’s best-known political refugee, has been in the embassy since he was offered sanctuary there last June. British police in black Kevlar vests are perched night and day on the steps leading up to the building, and others wait in the lobby directly in front of the embassy door. An officer stands on the corner of a side street facing the iconic department store Harrods, half a block away on Brompton Road. (more…)

Toledo. 1000 days in prison without trial. Free Bradley Manning.

I was in a military courtroom at Fort Meade in Maryland on Thursday as Pfc. Bradley Manning admitted giving classified government documents to WikiLeaks. The hundreds of thousands of leaked documents exposed U.S. war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as government misconduct. A statement that Manning made to the court was a powerful and moving treatise on the importance of placing conscience above personal safety, the necessity of sacrificing careers and liberty for the public good, and the moral imperative of carrying out acts of defiance. AlJazeeraEnglish·Jan 5, 2013

On the campaign trail four years ago, US presidential candidate Barack Obama shared his views on whistleblowers. He said: “Often the best source of information about waste, fraud and abuse in government is a government employee committed to public integrity, willing to speak out. Such acts of courage and patriotism … should be encouraged rather than stifled.”

SmellsLikePodcast·Dec. 13, 2012

Sibel Edmonds is the founder and President of the National Security Whistleblowers Coalition (NSWBC), and runs the independent website Boiling Frogs Post. During her time working for the FBI in 2001-2002, she reported on serious acts of misconduct within the Bureau, and was subsequently retaliated against, and fired. After a long battle, she published the book Classified Woman: The Sibel Edmonds Story, earlier this year. Her courage and willingness to fight for justice are traits that are to be admired, and we were very pleased to have the opportunity to speak with her on the podcast. (more…)

Sibel Edmonds?

Last Thursday, one day before leaving the sin city, in our temporary suitcase-filled rental apartment, I gave an interview to Lew Rockwell on Classified Woman and much more. I say much more because despite all the chaos I was unusually relaxed and open during this interview. Part of it had to do with my interviewee; someone I respect-someone who understands, and if you listen to this show you’ll find another reason (why I chose Mr. Rockwell as one of the first recipients of advanced copies of my book).

Internet memes: Julian Assange by Andy Warhol

The British government’s threat to invade the Ecuadorean embassy in London and seize Julian Assange is of historic significance. David Cameron, the former PR man to a television industry huckster and arms salesman to sheikdoms, is well placed to dishonour international conventions that have protected Britons in places of upheaval. Just as Tony Blair’s invasion of Iraq led directly to the acts of terrorismin London on 7 July 2005, so Cameron and Foreign Secretary William Hague have compromised the safety of British representatives across the world.

Julian Assange makes his first public appearance in two months, ever since he took refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. The WikiLeaks founder was granted political asylum on Thursday — a decision that ignited a wave of international responses, with the UK and Sweden opposing the verdict and Latin American countries strongly supporting Ecuador’s move. On Tuesday, Wikileaks founder Julian Assange sought political asylum at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, UK. At a press conference today in Quito, the foreign minister said to the media that the government is evaluating the request and looking into the rules of international law. Back in 2010 the country offered the whistleblower citizenship, but why is Assange seeking to depart to Ecuador now? RT America’s Web Producer Andrew Blake helps us answer some of these pressing questions.
