British Defense Secretary says a significant number of weapons used by Iraqi insurgents either come from or are smuggled in from Iran.
Following recent accusations by the Bush administration against Iran, UK’s Des Browne claimed that British troops supporting Iraqi border forces have seized large amounts of weapons traced back to Iran.
“There is evidence to suggest a significant proportion of the equipment and the armaments being used by insurgents used in Iraq is of Iranian origin or has been transited through Iran,” he told lawmakers.
Browne said Britain was trying to caution the Islamic Republic that it was in the country’s long-term interest to avoid instability in the region.
Observers maintain Browne’s remarks indicate that the UK will back US accusations despite the lack of ‘smoking gun proof’ that Iran is funneling weapons to Iraqi militants.
Pundits believe ‘Washington and allies’ are increasing attempts to manipulate public opinion about Iran in a bid to portray the country as a threat and prepare the world for a possible military strike against the country.
