One problem Nader doesn’t address is the lack of a meaningful progressive challenger in many districts. In my district, certainly, the incumbent faced a manifestly unserious progressive challenge in the primary, and to my knowledge faces none at all in the general election. We need candidates, starting at the top, at the Presidential level, who are determined not just to “broaden the debate” but to win elections. I think part of what is holding back public support from progressive candidates is a sense that they are content to be gadflies. I’d like to see Nader make it absolutely clear and convincing that he’s in this campaign to be President, and that if he manages to broaden the debate, that’s very good, but the overarching goal is to be President in 2009.
