US commandoes have reportedly attacked a Syrian border town near Iraq, killing at least nine people and wounding 14 others.
According to the local residents, four US helicopters were involved in the attack on the town of Al-Sukkariya, eight kilometers from the Iraqi border, DPA reported on Sunday.
Eyewitnesses said two helicopters landed in the border town from which eight American commandoes disembarked. The US troops then attacked people, killing nine and wounding 14 others.
“Nine people were killed and 14 wounded in the raid, which hit a group of builders while they were working,” the private television channel al-Dunia said. “All victims were civilians.”
The victims were identified as construction workers with the wounded being transferred to a nearby hospital.
The helicopters reportedly left Syrian space with all the troops again on board.
Sergeant Brooke Murphy, a US military spokesman told AFP that the military was investigating the report.
US Attacks Syria, Nine Killed near Iraqi Border
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu
Two to four United States helicopters attacked Syria, near the Iraqi border, Sunday evening, killing at least nine people. The site was near the target Israel bombed last year.
Foreign media reported that residents in the village of Al-Sukkariya, approximately 300 miles northeast of Damascus and about 10 miles inside Syrian territory and near the main border crossing from Syria into Iraq. Syrian government news agencies confirmed the attack, and a private Syrian television channel reported that nine men died and 14 were wounded.
Two of the helicopters reportedly landed in the village, where eight American soldiers jumped out and carried out the operation. The soldiers quickly returned to the helicopters, and all of the craft left the scene.
It was the first time the U.S. has attacked on Syrian land.

A Raid in Syria
In From the Cold
Sunday, October 26, 2008
There were a number of factors behind that U.S. special forces raid into Syrian territory. First, as the U.K. Times observes, the mission was designed to send a clear message to Damascus. After years of waiting for Syria to police its eastern border–and stop the flow of jihadists into Iraq–American commanders, with the approval of Washington, took matters into their own hands.

US Raid inside Syria Kills 8

US troops made a raid inside Syrian territory near Iraq, according to Syrian media, which left 8 persons (the Syrians say civilians) dead.
What is odd is that the Bush administration did not behave that way when the infiltration of fundamentalist vigilantes from the Syrian side was a more significant problem.
I don’t know if this is election politics on Bush’s part, an attempt by Bush-Cheney to mire Obama down in a Syria conflict they started.

Syrian officials claim the US military conducted a cross-border raid into Syria from Iraqi territory.
The raid was reportedly carried out in the town of Sukkariya near Abu Kamal in eastern Syria. According to witnesses, four US helicopters crossed the border and two of the helicopters landed to drop off special operations forces.
The US has shied away from conducting strikes inside Syria in the past. If confirmed this would be the first such strike inside Syria since the US invaded Iraq in March of 2003.
