Chopra: What we have seen in Mumbai has been brewing for a long time, and the war on terrorism and the attack on Iraq compounded the situation. What we call “collateral damage” and going after the wrong people actually turns moderates into extremists, and that inflammation then gets organized and appears as this disaster in Bombay. Now the worst thing that could happen is there’s a backlash on the Muslims from the fundamental Hindus in India, which then will perpetuate the problem. Inflammation will create more inflammation.

CNN: Let me jump in on that because you’re presuming something very important, which is that it’s Muslims who have carried out these attacks and, in some cases, with Washington in their sights.

Chopra: Ultimately the message is always toward Washington because it’s also the perception that Washington, in their way, directly or indirectly funds both sides of the war on terror. They fund our side, then our petrol dollars going to Saudi Arabia through Pakistan and ultimately these terrorist groups, which are very organized. You know Jonathan, it takes a lot of money to do this. It takes a lot of organization to do this. Where’s the money coming from, you know? The money is coming from the vested interests. I’m not talking about conspiracy theories, but what happens is, our policies, our foreign policies, actually perpetuate this problem. Because, you know, 25% of the world’s population is Muslim and they’re the fastest growing segment of the population of the world. The more we alienate the Muslim population, the more the moderates are likely to become extremists.

  1. Deepak Chopra’s far-left rhetoric reveals that he is not a deep thinker. he obviously doesnt want the America that the founding fathers fought for. he wants a weak, socialistic, France-like society that punishes hard work. The tone of his rhetoric is that of an angry pessimist. Only the “elite” like him are smart enough to take car of themselves. the rest of Americans are sheep that need protection by the government. Give me a break Deepak! Keep America free. This is the only place where a pseudo-scientist, snake -oil salesman can make it big. Your views on Mumbai, especially reveal your ignorance and paranoia. ANYONE WHO READS YOUR BOOKS NEEDS TO BE AWARE THAT THE AUTHOR IS ANGRY, WITHOUT TRUE SERENITY THUS A TOTAL HYPOCRITE!

    • What does not alienating Islam have to do with keeping america from becoming ‘socialist’? And how does inflaming Islam keep America ‘free’?

I would give credence to what he’s saying:

Bombing weddings with drones, causing the deaths of a million Muslims is definitely not going to calm the waters of Islamic terrorism.

Waging wars, or sponsoring the waging of wars in which civilians are inevitably slaughtered, displaced and starved is not a sign of strength, it’s more terrorism.

Whether a wedding or a market is bombed by a suicide bomber, or by a US drone, both fit the definition of terrorism.

If not Deepak, try Gandhi, who said that each act of violence brings the next act of retaliation in train.

The ‘smoke ’em out’ strongman militaristic approach Deepak indicts, likely served only to create 4 more radical militants for every one the US managed to kill with their wars. This whole approach can only serve to make mainstream what was once a radical fringe.

We in the USA, however, appear to have made militarism our mainstream mode and our national style. We need to abandon the addiction to ‘glory’ and ‘valor’ americans still seem to crave from the last world war. It’s not worked for decades.

      “Come home America”.
There is no way to peace, peace is the way.

  2. What a nutcase. Who is he anyway? He is a conman who can only state the obvious from religious texts. For commenting on these events, how is he qualified? He should give away all the money he has made off unsuspecting Americans and go back to what he is good for – proabably nothing now.

  3. Deepak Chopra is one of my favorite people. He is very aware of what is really going on here in the U.S.
Others bury their heads in the sand, or look the other way (Chris). Maybe Americans should do more investigating on their own, instead of watching bought-and-paid-for “news” stations.

  6. Simplistic drivel – he should go back to what he does best and you should learn the virtues of patience and patriotism.
