While Israel continues to deny world journalists any access to the area and people under its cynically named “Molten Lead” attack on Gaza, flouting freedom of information among the many other basic rights it is violating, people around the world are resorting to receiving and spreading information in the tried and proven form of letters—personal ones to friends and family or open, public letters to politicians and elected representatives. Often coming from or transmitted by known contacts such as friends, friends of friends, acquaintances, these letters embody the reliability of personal voice and personal connections. Many of them are widely disseminated over the web by their original recipients.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has suspended operations in Gaza since coming under attack by Israeli military forces on Friday.

A statement from the UNRWA said its temporary suspension “was compelled by incidents in which UNRWA staff, convoys and installations have come under attack.”

The statement said, “On numerous occasions in recent days, humanitarian convoys have come under Israeli fire even though their safe passage through clearly designated routes at specifically agreed times, had been confirmed by the Israeli liaison office.”

The suspension of operations was necessary due to “the nature, severity and frequency of these incidents”.

Open Letter to President-Elect Obama by Ralph Nader

Dear President-Elect Obama:

You have been receiving a great deal of advice since November 4, 2008 from people and groups who either want you to advance policies not covered in your campaign or who want you to be more specific about initiatives you emphasized.

There are two suggestions which may not be among your store of recommendations that need to be considered before you take office on January 20, 2009.

First, the public would benefit from a concise recounting of the state of the union and where the Bush Administration has left our country. As is your style, you can render such a bright line of serious problems inside and outside the government in a matter-of-fact manner. Otherwise, a blurring of who was responsible for what can taint your presidency.

The US Senate on Thursday passed a non-binding resolution promoted by the influential Israeli lobby AIPAC (The American Israel Public Affairs Committee), effectively endorsing Israel’s war on Gaza. The resolution, entitled “A resolution expressing solidarity with Israel in Israel’s defense against terrorism in the Gaza Strip” recognizes “the right of Israel to defend itself against attacks from Gaza” and reaffirms “the United States’ strong support for Israel in its battle with Hamas”.

The resolution does not recognize the right to self-defense of the Palestinian people.

The resolution criticizes Hamas for refusing “to comply with the requirements of the Quartet”, which include to “recognize Israel’s right to exist” and to “renounce violence”.

Jewish Peace News: Resistance to the war

These pieces are organized around the theme of resistance. They discuss various actions, initiatives and statements by Jews and Israelis who are speaking out and acting in solidarity with Palestinians who are struggling to keep themselves and their families alive in Gaza. There are many suggestions for actions that you can take.

(1) Tom Pessah, an Israeli doing a PhD in the US, writes another update on protests and people inside of Israel. His attention to nuance and detail make this description extraordinary. Rebecca Vilkomerson attended the rally too and reports that the number was closer to 500 people (Pessah reports about 100): “it was also noteworthy that there were so many women and children at the rally, which despite all the police who were present, gave the rally a rather gentle presence, and unlike in Tel Aviv, there were no counter-protesters throwing eggs, so all in all it was one of the more pleasant demo experiences recently.”

Senate Democrats endorse Israeli war crimes

9 January 2009

As evidence of Israeli war crimes mounted and amid signs that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) are launching a new and even bloodier phase of the two-week war against the embattled people of Gaza, the Democratic leadership of the US Senate Thursday led the passage of a bipartisan resolution endorsing Israel’s actions. The resolution passed by a unanimous voice vote.

The resolution begins by “recognizing the right of Israel to defend itself against attacks from Gaza and reaffirming the United States’ strong support for Israel in its battle with Hamas.”

The preamble of the document contains 12 paragraphs vilifying Hamas as a “terrorist” organization and blaming it entirely for the ongoing war in Gaza. It includes one brief mention of the “humanitarian situation in Gaza,” but quickly adds that Israel has “facilitated humanitarian aid.”

British Muslim leaders: ‘We are witnessing a time of great danger’

Leading Muslim counter-extremism advisers urge Gordon Brown to hold Israel accountable for its attacks on Gaza

Guardian, 8 January 2009

More than a dozen of the government’s leading Muslim counter-extremism advisers have signed a joint letter to Gordon Brown to warn that Israeli actions in Gaza are damaging the British government’s efforts to tackle religious extremism at home. The 14 signatories – which include several prominent moderate Muslim community leaders – say that while the British government should not alter its foreign policy in order to placate Islamist extremists, it should also avoid taking actions which will play into the hands of radicals.

2009-01-06 23:56:07 **opinion**

Once an avid follower of and commentator on the Israel-Palestine conflict, unfortunately I haven’t been able to follow it as much in recent times. Even during the current Israel action I have been unable to follow it as much as I once was, and anytime I have felt the need to write an article it has been lost in a sense of hopelessness that, to be truthful, is probably the real reason I stopped following it so avidly.

But I just flicked the news on, Sky News was showing the UN Security Council Meeting live, and I heard the Israeli representative Gabriela Shalev say something that definitely warranted my writing about: after saying that Israel had shown restraint throughout 8 years of rocket fire, which isn’t true and I will come back to, when explaining why Israel was forced to act she said, “to grant our citizens the basic right [long pause] of a normal life.”

What about the Palestinians right to a normal life, the right to move freely around your own lands, the right to farm land that belongs to your family, the right to travel outside your own borders, the right to export and import goods, the right to run businesses, employ staff and have enough money to buy food to feed your family and fuel to heat your home, all aspects of a modern “normal life” and all impossible dreams for Palestinians living under Israeli occupation. And as for the 8 years restraint, does Miss Shalev think we have forgotten Autumn Clouds and Summer Rains, not to mention all the prolonged air-only operations, arrest raids and mini-incursions into Gaza in those same 8 years?

But the Israeli representatives’ statement wasn’t even what brought me straight onto the keyboard, it was the statements of UK representative David Milliband that really shocked me into writing. He said:

“The truce between June and December 2008, in truth was less than that, rockets were fired into Israel, Palestinians died as a result of Israeli military operations, and endured months of deprivation.”

David Milliband’s statements, — not just the snippet above but his entire statement — for me, represent a fair and balanced approach by the UK to the Israel-Palestine conflict, which gives me more hope than I have had for a long time. Of course many will say it is only to be expected as part of PM Browns endeavour to be as far away from a US puppet as possible after the Blair fiasco, but for me David Milliband went a lot further than would have been necessary to distance the UK viewpoint from the US. After all the US statement parroted by Condoleezza Rice was the same statement they have made since the first bombs fell, Israel has the right to defend itself, the conflict is Hamas’ fault (they started it).

One thing that didn’t surprise me in Tonight’s news was that Israel had bombarded a UN school that was being used as a refuge for fleeing Palestinian civilians including children. Of course it was an accident, I mean a country with the sophisticated spy-planes and satellite guided bombs would have absolutely no way of knowing where a UN school was in a place the size of Gaza.

In reality the bombing of the UN school, just as they hit a UN facility during the last Lebanon conflict, and on the day when the UNSC is to meet, fulfils two aims, it says to the UNSC “we don’t care what you decide or resolute upon, we, like the US are a law onto ourselves, and also the “accidental” killing of innocent civilians, primarily children, in the hope of turning the Palestinians at large against Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

I was with my dad when I heard that Israel had begun a massive campaign of air-strikes, and I said to him “at some point in this conflict, Israel will hit a place where there is absolutely no chance that rockets or anything else had been fired from, killing Palestinian civilians and several Palestinian children in the hope of turning the Palestinians against Hamas,” and it happened tonight.

Please accept my apologies if the UN school was not the first blatant intentional killing of Palestinian civilians of the current conflict; as I said I haven’t been following the conflict closely.
