One of the weapons Israel is alleged to have used in Gaza is white phosphorous, a dangerous chemical that burns its victims. Israel has not admitted using the weapons, which some human rights groups suspect come from the US, and one small town in Arkansas. Al Jazeera’s Mike Kirsch reports.

Gaza’s burn victims add to pressure on army over phosphorus

The Times
January 12, 2009

Pressure grew on Israel to end the use of controversial white phosphorus yesterday as The Times saw more evidence of its deployment around civilian populations in Gaza.

More than 50 people with burns were taken into Nasser Hospital in the southern town of Khan Yunis, in what the hospital director, Youssef Abu Al-Reesh, said was a massive case of exposure to white phosphorus.

“We don’t have the medical experience to judge these cases, but we searched the internet according to the cases we have, and it indeed confirmed that it’s white phosphorus munitions. I have been working in this hospital for ten years and I have never seen anything like this.”

The Israeli Defense force (IDF) released a video claiming to show evidence that Hamas had used a mosque to store weapons, but an analysis of the video casts doubt on the claim. The IDF also falsely claimed Hamas had fired mortars from a UN-run school to cover up its shelling of the school, resulting in the deaths of more than 40 civilians who had taken refuge there. This was the third UN school hit. Israel has also attacked a UN medical center, UN convoys bringing humanitarian supplies into Gaza, and a UN warehouse where such goods are stored.

Have we not come to such an impasse in the modern world that we must love our enemies—or else? The chain reaction of evil—hate begetting hate, wars producing more wars—must be broken, or else we shall be plunged into the dark abyss of annihilation.  — Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr

Today, I wept as my forehead was pressed against the wall of glass partitioning me and other National Civil Rights’ Museum goers from the spot where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr, lie after he was shot down by an assassin’s bullet on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN. I wept for perhaps the greatest American civil rights’ leader, but also for the man who had begun (against the wishes of many of his colleagues) to vigorously not only speak out against the murder in Vietnam, but also strenuously against militarism, which he called in his Building the Beloved Community (which I feel is King’s opus) speech delivered at Riverside Church in NYC exactly one year before his death: one of the greatest of “evils” along with racism and poverty.

It’s hard to believe that the ‘Change We Can Believe In’ candidate could have morphed into the ‘Are You Kidding Me’ man before he was even inaugurated. It usually takes a little longer before we catch on to the fact that we have been hoodwinked by yet another amateur.

Obama’s early choices for cabinet positions and other posts were questionable from the start. What is Hillary ‘We’ll Obliterate Them’ Clinton doing as the designee for Secretary of State? Why is pit bull Rahm Emanuel the new chief of staff? Why would a ‘change’ administration keep holdovers from the Bush years?

But, as events are now showing, worse choices were yet to come.

excerpts from: ‘Ahmadinejad: Israelis should pour into streets

Press TV, 15 January 2009

“I call on all those who live in the occupied territories, including Jews, Christians and Muslims to pour into the streets,” said Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in a Thursday message.

He added that Israelis should show their support for the Palestinian nation by joining the world in demonstrating against the crimes committed by Tel Aviv.

“To the people who live under Israeli repression in the occupied territories, you are human beings no matter your religion, race for faith. It is time that you ponder and ask the leaders of the Zionist regime why it is that the people of Gaza are being treated in this way,” said the Iranian president.

[…]

Ahmadinejad also urged Israeli soldiers to disobey their commanders when ordered to fire upon the women and children of Gaza.

“Ask yourself why you have to kill women and children and innocent civilians? It is time that you protest over orders given by your commanders. Disobey their orders to massacre and refrain from killing innocent civilians,” he added.

Ahmadinejad urged protests to continue until “the thoughts that fuel disrespect, abuse and racism dry up”.

Bolivia to take Israel to The Hague

Press TV
Fri, 16 Jan 2009 19:35:31 GMT

Bolivia is seeking to take Tel Aviv to International Criminal Court over the brutal atrocities the Israeli forces have committed in Gaza.

The Andean state says it is intended to make regional allies take a unified stance against “the Israeli political and military leaders responsible for the offensive on the Gaza Strip” and make it to stand trial at the international body in the Hague, said Sacha Llorenti, whose portfolio covers civil society.

[…]

Bolivia followed in the steps of its ally Venezuela and severed diplomatic ties with Israel over its massacre of the Gazans and snubbing the international calls for an ‘immediate’ and ‘durable’ truce, said the Latin American governments.

Across the world, the Israeli bombardment of Gaza has been viewed with horror and outrage. The massive loss of human life in the densely-populated occupied territory has sparked worldwide condemnation and protest. In Europe, North America, the Middle East, Latin America, Africa and Asia, millions of people have demonstrated against the Israeli version of “shock and awe.” The number and size of these protests are a testament of global solidarity with the Palestinian cause, and open new fronts against Zionism and U.S. foreign policy in the region.

Global Solidarity with Palestine

In the Middle East, for example, hundreds of thousands of people have gathered and marched in Lebanon, Turkey, Syria, Jordan, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, Libya and Egypt. In many cases, these protests have blamed the Arab regimes for colluding with Israel and the United States, and have faced severe repression as a result. Protests and riots have also occurred across the occupied West Bank and have suffered repression from the joint forces of Israel and Fatah. In Israel itself, protests by Arabs, communists, anarchists and Jews have also taken place, including a few “civil disobedience” actions.
