British Jews have been attacked for expressing support for Palestinians suffering under Israeli military strikes in Gaza. Police confirmed yesterday that they have provided protection to a number of people believed to be victims of UK-based Zionist extremists angered by expressions of solidarity with Palestinians.

Israel’s assault on Gaza has prompted a rise in anti-Semitic attacks in Britain, with more than 150 incidents reported by the Community Security Trust (CST), an organisation for the protection of Jews. But the past two weeks have also seen aggression within the Jewish community towards those sympathetic to the plight of Gaza.

Betraying the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King by Andrew Hughes

Dandelion Salad

by Andrew Hughes
Global Research, January 18, 2009

Martin Luther King Day precedes the historic inauguration of America’s first African American President

Martin Luther King Day in 2009 precedes the dawn of the historic inauguration of America’s first African American President. This inauguration is lauded as the realization of Dr. King’s dream, a defining moment in the cultural paradigm, a tectonic shift in race relations and a beacon of real change for the plight of the poor and oppressed. Infusing the dreams and ethos of Dr. King in to the presidential persona demands a confluence of ideals and actions to truly deserve the association. To betray the dream, to profit from the sacrifice is to insult the legacy. To be worthy of the torch demands integrity.

“Somehow this madness must cease. We must stop now. I speak as a child of God and brother to the suffering poor of Vietnam.I speak for those whose land is being laid waste, whose homes are being destroyed, whose culture is being subverted. I speak for the poor in America who are paying the double price of smashed hopes at home and death and corruption in Vietnam. I speak as a citizen of the world, for the world as it stands aghast at the path we have taken. I speak as an American to the leaders of my own nation. The great initiative in this war is ours. The initiative to stop it must be ours.”

Legacies? How About “Good Riddance to the Swine?” by Walter C. Uhler

Sent to DS from the author, thanks, Walter.

Tony Auth’s political cartoon in the Philadelphia Inquirer’s January 14th edition is the quintessential picture that is worth a thousand words. It tells you almost everything you need to know about the uniquely evil Bush/Cheney regime — i.e., its lies about Saddam Hussein’s WMD, its illegal torture at Abu Ghraib, its illegal wiretaps, its pathetically immoral and incompetent response to Hurricane Katrina, its ideological trashing of politically incorrect scientific findings, its oversight failures, which contributed to Wall Street’s collapse and Cheney’s devilish torching of the Constitution. Moreover, it deftly pencils in the world’s feeble response to such evil: the hurling of shoes at Bush from all corners.

As such, Mr. Auth’s cartoon serves as a one-stop reminder of the catastrophic Bush/Cheney “Time of Troubles” at the very moment when these swine give interviews designed to spread a final round of self-serving lies — in a futile attempt to salvage their legacy of evil. Therefore, you might want to keep Auth’s cartoon by your side, especially if you plan to watch Bush’s prime time farewell address tonight.

A Gaza story by WDA (poem)

Dandelion Salad

Sent to DS by the author, the mother of Samar.  With our deepest sympathies and condolences to WDA and all of Samar’s family and friends.  ~ DS

by WDA

I am seated on rubble and ashes
I don’t know if Aya my doll is still in my arms
I still can hear the talks, the whispers and the crying of latest days
And the laughs of other times
I still hear the familiar call for praying, the sounds of the house …

I hope to see my family and my friends soon
so we can run and laugh as we used to do,
each day a new world…

Now it is all rubble and ashes
and me half seated, half buried in it
My name is Samar, I was six
I lived in innocence
I died in Gaza.

Muslim & Jewish women: Vigil & Speakout against slaughter in Gaza

Monday 19 January 2009, 5.30-7pm

Protest the BBC’s reporting of the Gaza crisis. All women welcome.

BBC Broadcasting House Portland Place,
London W1A 1AA
(near Oxford Circus)
link to map

We have come together to spell out the truth about Occupied Palestine that the media, beginning with the BBC, refuses to report – about Zionist apartheid, women giving birth at checkpoints, the expulsions, the theft of land and resources, the imprisonment of children, the swimming pools in Zionist settlements filled by siphoning Palestinians’ drinking water. The BBC has not publicly complained that Israel is preventing their reporters from entering Gaza to witness the bombing and invasion firsthand. Neither does it report Jewish opposition to this Zionist slaughter of the innocents.

We are Muslim and Jewish women who are speaking out together against the Israeli slaughter and devastation in Gaza . We, like the whole world, are shocked by what we witness on our television screens, a small part of the horrendous truth. But we are not surprised by this horror. Israel has been driving Palestinians from their homes, killing and maiming women, children and men, bulldozing and bombing their infrastructure, since 1948 when the UN gave them permission to impose a Zionist state on Palestinian land.

No one works harder than the women in Occupied Palestine to keep family, neighbours and friends alive. In Gaza under the stress of shortages of the most basic necessities as a result of the blockade — endorsed by the EU — women under bombardment and invasion must watch their babies being killed and maimed. This is the most powerful indictment of Israeli arrogant racist and sexist murder.

We must spell out how, to justify the US/Israeli war against the people of the Middle East, the UK has launched a racist war against Muslims in Britain .

Therefore we Muslim and Jewish women are coming together to hold a vigil and speakout. Women will finally tell their story of what they have to do and undergo to try to preserve life and to resist occupation and genocide.

In every society we women are the carers of the human race. Our work is human survival. Let us exercise this power to help stop Israel ‘s war against Palestine.

Is the Economy Going to Get Worse? “The Market Could Tank Very Soon” After the Inauguration of President Barack Obama

Dandelion Salad

Global Research, January 17, 2009
George Washington’s Blog

Exactly the Opposite of What You’ve Been Told

Most Americans have been told by the Bush administration and the talking heads that things will get worse for a couple of months, but then the economy will start to turn around and improve in the second half of 2009 after Bushco and Obamaco’s bailout and stimulus programs kick in.In fact, the smart money is saying that the exact opposite will happen.

Specifically, Marc Faber, Robert McHugh, Societe Generale, Mish and others are saying that the stock market is now in a bear market bounce, buoyed by the hope of the general population that Obama will turn things around. But that at some point after the inauguration, people will realize that Obama’s plan won’t stop the crisis, and that things are going to get worse.

At that point, they say, the market will really tank.

Mish and Societe Generale think the market could tank very soon – say a couple of days after the inauguration.

Faber and McHugh seem to think the crash will come in the spring.

But they all agree that the exact opposite of what the mainstream talking heads say will occur: things will seem temporarily better, and then the market will crash dramatically.

The people are good at anointing who they believe are heroes. It gives us a warm and fuzzy feeling to know there are those among us who do extraordinary things, often at the risk of their own lives.

But, if you ask the true heroes, most will just say they were doing their job or doing something that needed to be done.

Chesley B. (Sully) Sullenberger, who ditched his aircraft in the Hudson on Thursday, is by all accounts a hero. When he had a “double bird strike” and lost all power shortly after taking off from New York’s LaGuardia Airport, he had to quickly calculate a few thousand things, the most important of which was how to get his aircraft down without hurting anyone on the plane or in a projected landing area below.

The population of Gaza is completely fenced in, and for the last three weeks – since the start of Israel’s air, sea and then land assaults – there has been no escape route, no possible exist from the Israeli assault. More than 1,000 Palestinians have already been killed in this war, many if not most of whom were civilians, including more than 300 children.

The internet, cell phones and the existence of concerned people outside the warzone give us a strange and terrifying window into life in Gaza. Human rights organizations are collecting testimonies from survivors of Israel’s attacks, which are available here: http://gazaeng.blogspot.com/search/label/testimonies. On another blog, a Palestinian from Ramallah, Mohammad, continues to report on his extended family in Gaza (we published links to other reports of his here: http://jewishpeacenews.blogspot.com/2009/01/more-on-gaza.html). At last writing, Israeli forces had surrounded one uncle’s neighborhood (Tal al-Hawa), bombs were falling, houses collapsing, and that uncle and his family were no longer answering their phones: http://www.kabobfest.com/2009/01/gaza-no-sign-of-life.html.
