It’s Not Going to Be OK, By Chris Hedges

The daily bleeding of thousands of jobs will soon turn our economic crisis into a political crisis. The street protests, strikes and riots that have rattled France, Turkey, Greece, Ukraine, Russia, Latvia, Lithuania, Bulgaria and Iceland will descend on us. It is only a matter of time. And not much time. When things start to go sour, when Barack Obama is exposed as a mortal waving a sword at a tidal wave, the United States could plunge into a long period of precarious social instability.

At no period in American history has our democracy been in such peril or has the possibility of totalitarianism been as real. Our way of life is over. Our profligate consumption is finished. Our children will never have the standard of living we had. And poverty and despair will sweep across the landscape like a plague. This is the bleak future. There is nothing President Obama can do to stop it. It has been decades in the making. It cannot be undone with a trillion or two trillion dollars in bailout money. Our empire is dying. Our economy has collapsed.

  5. It is a good article, but unfortunately it seems to say that (with the exception of Andrew Bacevich) only critics from the progressive left are interested in freedom or saw this crisis coming.
I beg to set the record straight. Every libertarian in America has been fighting the status quo for our liberty and for a sound and fair economic system.
We need to pull together. It wouldn’t kill you to mention Dr. Ron Paul.

  7. tubette, Obama is no seed of intelligence. he a pseudo-progressive that has coopted the spineless left with rhetoric . Bush elected him . the nation was so down that it put an infant in office. i call him Barack W. Obama.
same corporations . same bailouts . same war. same patriot act. same unfair trade policies . thurgood marshall said ” a black snake can bite just like a white one can . get ready . this house of cards will fall just like the last one . good riddance.

  8. We’re in the age of posse comitatus, “free speech zones,” FISA warrantless spying, extraordinary rendtions, and preemptive wars based on hallucinations of boogeymen. The economy has been based on, and fueled by, imaginary money and ponzi schemes. We are willing to elect, and serve, brainless demogogues. There are several TV’s in every home, and most of them are turned on most of the time, even while people are sleeping. The country’s newspapers are owned by only 20 mega-corporations. We have a list of more than one million Americans who can’t fly on commercial airliners.

Yet we fuss and fume over whether it’s OK for gay people to get married or if it’s OK to burn a flag. An American actress puts her dress on backward and it makes headline news. People are slaughtered in genocides, and we wonder who is going to be the next “American Idol.”

How can anyone wonder why things are the way they are?

  9. I am not so negative, Obama will be given an opporunity to make the changes necessary, but if he does not people will not put up with this any longer, the facts are that this market ecomony, free trade, period has throughout history just created the very same invironment that we are dealing with today. there is no free trade today, only hidden taxes placed on commomodites by a corrupt trading system.

Yes they are using training the military, and they have built 12 prision camps but not for the people for the mobsters that have run amock for the last 60 years, since JFk they have ruled this country and our voices have not been heard. They have murdered Senators and Congressmen and Presidents, nobody in this country that has had a chance to be the voice of change has been allowed to live, Lennon and others, you watch, you are about to witness a change, because I know about the investigation, secret that has been going on for more than 10 years, and shit is about ready to hit the fan.

the worst thing is both demo’s and republicans are wrong, it was not the repub’s that got rid of financial regulations, was the demo’s, the problem we have today is the size of the government we can not afford this size this is sucking the life out of our society, and I am not saying that everybody in this country should not be educated, and provided with health care in and times of need welfare, but, we have got to get a system that is self sustaining. And we can not sustain all these police, legalize drugs, and let the people out of jail, drugs is a medical problem not a crmininal problem, but the moeny from the drugs just like prohabition is too strong to make that change, you see that would be the start, we have to go back to personal responsiblity, morals and values must come back to America.

I could go on for hours.

  14. nothing will change until all the third world’s cheap labor has been utilized and the people go through what we have already peaked on…. there is much catching up in the world to bring about real change….

let us all not despair, change will come, but like all change it will come through profound circumstances that force people to see the need.

i prefer to see the positive that will come from all of the suffering that may be felt.

president obama will not be able to fix the world, but he is the seed of intelligence that the world needs to grow.
