By war and by peace, Israel aims to destroy the Palestinians, physically and psychologically, writes Samera Esmeir

Three weeks after the war on Gaza, Israel declared a unilateral ceasefire but refused to terminate its so-called defensive operations. In response, Hamas declared a ceasefire for one week, until the withdrawal of Israeli troops has been completed. For many in the West, the ceasefire might seem like an occasion to celebrate, for the cessation of military hostilities on both sides will perhaps renew the peace process. But there are reasons to be critical of this ceasefire, since it continues the situation in which Israel acts unilaterally. What we are actually witnessing is a new phase of the catastrophe in Gaza. While the characteristics of this phase are not yet known, Israel’s violence has become ever more evident. And perhaps this is why Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert did not mention the word “peace” once in the speech he gave to announce the ceasefire. The “peace process” might soon be revealed as the other side of the coin to war — its continuation by other means — that simultaneously feeds it.

  1. Innocent civilians, whom no one consulted if they’d be interested in going to war, and no one really, from both sides of the conflict – The Israeli government or Hama – seem to give a damn about ,are the only victims in this war. Both Israel and Hamas are as far from humanity and care about innocent civilians as can be. Both are liers, phony, hypocritical and savages in their own way. Both sides apitomize the ugliest side of man because they act as if life has no sanctity whatsoever and innocent lives are mere collareral damage. Someone needs to step in and force both parties to stop being their barbarian selves and force them to act in a civilized manner which they aren’t accustomed to. I know that’s near impossible, and no one can make especially Israel do anything it doesn’t want – literally no one, as they grew up like an extremely obnoxious, sociopathic and spoiled child, has been able to or even dared to try to convince them that they are not above international law, and that they can’t get away with what they’re doing forever. Their impunity warranty will expire one day and they will stand naked with their ugly horrific history in front of the whole world to answer for their crimes against humanity.
