Is economic despair the vehicle for totalitarianism?

Plummeting unemployment rates mark this economic crisis around the nation which is resulting in a political crisis on Capitol Hill, as Democrats and the GOP debate the stimulus. Some analysts say that this economic despair is creating a vehicle towards totalitarianism, which was evident during the Great Depression. But during that depression, the nation had strong labor unions and a vibrant independent press. Without those traditional tools, what might we face in the coming years? Chris Hedges is the author of American Fascists: the Christian Right and the War on America, and a Pulitzer-prize winning journalist. He is pessimistic about he says is a growing movement towards fascism in the US.

“the awareness that we are all human beings in this together is LOST in WAR and in POLITICS.” Albert Schweitzer when receiving the Nobel Peace prize in 1958.

Saint Jerome warned “CHARITY is NOT SUBSTITUTE FOR JUSTICE DENIED” meaning SOCIALISM AND A WELFARE STATE IS NO SUBSTITUE FOR LAZY JUDGES WHO DO NOT DO THEIR JOBS RIGHT!>

    REPENT!

  4. Natureboy, you have a great point. I have had many discussions with people on this topic, and they always come to one essential point: People will accept what would seem to be acceptable, if it makes them feel secure.

The frightened public, worried about job loss, bread lines, foreclosure and war are ripe for a savior to come along and offer them security. All the people want is reassurance that they will be able to maintain a semblance of the status quo, and if they get that reassurance, they are more likely to be acquiescent.

This happened after 9/11. America wanted to be safe, even if we discriminated against Muslims, tampered with the constitution, tortured people and started a phony war in Iraq. This same bill of goods is still being sold (and bought, I might add). In the midst of the financial crisis, Obama is rallying the troops for a big surge in Afghanistan. War is always an economic tool, generating jobs and stimulating the economy. World War II is a good example.

Obama is part of the machine moving towards a fascist America, and I don’t think he will get much opposition because of these hard economic times. And yes, people really want this. They want someone to take charge of everything, run everything, dictate the way out of the quagmire, and most of all, to protect them.

  7. Interesting that in his view, fascism is centered around the church. After all what could be more authoritarian and nationalistic than submitting to the evangelical, intolerant american mega-church which promotes such wars of imperial aggression?

There is something deeply creepy about ‘believers’ who give away their independent thought in exchange for the dictation of cult leaders, who then organize their flocks to impact politics and foreign policy so profoundly as they’ve done in the US.

But then Nazis and Stalinists were devoutly secular…

One has to keep in mind that some form of soft fascism that Hedges warns about, or the version that Paul warns about, may indeed be what the people of the USA actually want.

All this warmongering, worshiping of the corporatists, longing for leaders, excusing the abuse of laws, zoning out on corporate media, perhaps the mindset of Americans is far less egalitarian or democratic than they like to think.

But if economic collapse begets political collapse, it’s hard to imagine that sinister forces of totalitarianism would benefit or flourish from this collapse in capital. It’s also hard to imagine that chaos could be controlled by police or military in this country, it’s too big.

You’d have to find a way to keep the populace happy and fed enough to accept totalitarian, nationalistic rule. Starve them and you’d have uncontrollable riots, and an oppressive police-state is hardly a proper fascist system, and hardly practical in a place like the USA.

You’d have to have the whole populace actually want to be controlled by big brother, as per the USSR, and if that’s what they want, then what could be more democratic than to let the idiotic, warmongering, religiously fanatical nation of miscreants wallow in their quest for a supreme leader who gets orders from god, and who’s armed to the teeth?

Perhaps this is the America the people daftly desire.
