Afghans fear more US air attacks with more troops – 18 Feb09
As Barack Obama, the US president, signed his economic rescue plan into law on Tuesday he also approved an additional 17,000 US troops for Afghanistan.
They’ll join the 38,000 already battling the Taliban in the country.
Obama said the extra troops are necessary to “stabilise a deteriorating situation”.
But all this came as residents in one Afghan village told an increasingly familiar story – one of US air attacks, and civilian casualties.

President Barack Obama on Tuesday ordered the dispatch of 17,000 additional US troops to Afghanistan in a major escalation of the increasingly bloody American-led occupation of the war-ravaged country.
In a brief written statement issued by the White House—Obama did not personally address the American people to inform them that a growing number of their sons and daughters would be sent to kill and be killed in defense of US strategic interests in Central Asia—the president signaled that the escalation in Afghanistan would be combined with an intensified military intervention across the border in Pakistan.
He cast the increased deployment as a response to a deteriorating situation in “Afghanistan and Pakistan,” and linked the resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan with an Al Qaeda safe haven “along the Pakistani border,” which he claimed—echoing the rhetoric of his predecessor—”threatens America.”

Disaster.
Enlistees who are willing to deploy here, after all, are on a fools errand, worse than Iraq. But what is an enlistee but a fool?
To Hell with the hideous Taliban, but the Afghans will need decide for themselves who lives in their horrible caves. If they choose to defy the Taliban, you can be sure the Taliban will be history, but the region cannot be controlled by force.
Obomba made this place a campaign promise of a disaster foretold.
Best thing the ‘western world’ can do to destabilize the Taliban? Boycott drugs, especially opiates, and especially Afghani ones.
My advice to the hideous Taliban: Rebuild the bamiyan buddha, and study.
