The Obama Administration’s chance to engage in a Middle East peace.

When the Israelis’ controversial twenty-two-day military campaign in Gaza ended, on January 18th, it also seemed to end the promising peace talks between Israel and Syria. The two countries had been engaged for almost a year in negotiations through intermediaries in Istanbul. Many complicated technical matters had been resolved, and there were agreements in principle on the normalization of diplomatic relations. The consensus, as an ambassador now serving in Tel Aviv put it, was that the two sides had been “a lot closer than you might think.”

At an Arab summit in Qatar in mid-January, however, Bashar Assad, the President of Syria, angrily declared that Israel’s bombing of Gaza and the resulting civilian deaths showed that the Israelis spoke only “the language of blood.” He called on the Arab world to boycott Israel, close any Israeli embassies in the region, and sever all “direct or indirect ties with Israel.” Syria, Assad said, had ended its talks over the Golan Heights.

  1. Probably the most disturbing aspect of the piece in the long article of Seymour Hersh quoted in the post above and is also the most threatening when he describes that what are the US plans for Pakistan’s nukes?

That is what the present turmoil in pakistan and US game may be all about – a unilateral US plan to have a US own potent force in Pakistan to attempt to take out the nuclear triggers which are normally kept away from nukes for security reason and thereby decapitate the nukes.

Is that why we are seeing so many covert US personnel arriving in batches into Pakistan? There may be no formal deal with Pakistani government; but there is a threatening unilateral US agenda. That Hersh has explained in his article most vividly!

  2. The USA, a responsible nuke power? Gimme A break man. I believe you have forgotten the debacles of Hiroshima mand nagasaki, the only nuclear disasters of history. Apart from that what about those 19 air nuke accidents involved at least 5 B-52s and a couple of B-47 & B-36. You were not probably born when in March 11,1958, a B-47 plane lost a nuclear bomb in South Carolina. You want me to give some sea and land nuke accidents details also? Why dont you folks just mind your own business and rest assured tyhat our nukes would be absolutely safe with any form of government. So just go home and relax please.
