At a press conference, on Capitol Hill, on May 13, 2009, Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH) spoke out strongly for a single payer healthcare system. He said: “Healthcare is a Civil Right!”

The event was organized by the California Nurses Assoc/NNOC. In 2008, Rep. Kucinich ran for president in the Democratic Primary. Of all the candidates, he was the strongest in opposing the immoral and illegal Iraq War. For background, see: http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/ and http://kucinich.house.gov/

Healthcare activists are supporting HR 676 and S 703, now pending before the U.S. Congress. For background and any updates, see: http://www.healthcare-now.org and

The Tamils of Sri Lanka – Distant Voices, Desperate Lives By John Pilger

By John Pilger
May 13, 2009 “Information Clearing House

In the early 1960s, it was the Irish of Derry who would phone late at night, speaking in a single breath, spilling out stories of discrimination and injustice. Who listened to their truth until the violence began? Bengalis from what was then East Pakistan did much the same. Their urgent whispers described terrible state crimes that the news ignored, and they implored us reporters to “let the world know”. Palestinians speaking above the din of crowded rooms in Bethlehem and Beirut asked no more. For me, the most tenacious distant voices have been the Tamils of Sri Lanka, to whom we ought to have listened a very long time ago.

It is only now, as they take to the streets of western cities, and the persecution of their compatriots reaches a crescendo, that we listen, though not intently enough to understand and act. The Sri Lankan government has learned an old lesson from, I suspect, a modern master: Israel. In order to conduct a slaughter, you ensure the pornography is unseen, illicit at best. You ban foreigners and their cameras from Tamil towns like Mulliavaikal, which was bombarded recently by the Sri Lankan army, and you lie that the 75 people killed in the hospital were blown up quite wilfully by a Tamil suicide bomber. You then give reporters a ride into the jungle, providing what in the news business is called a dateline, which suggests an eyewitness account, and you encourage the gullible to disseminate only your version and its lies. Gaza is the model.

The Raw Story

It was reported on Tuesday that Lieutenant General Stanley McChrystal will be taking over command of US forces in Afghanistan, pending Senate approval.

McChrystal is presently director of the Joint Chiefs staff, but from September 2003 to August 2008, he headed the Joint Special Operations Command JSOC, which oversees such elite units as the Army’s Delta Force and the Navy SEALs.

Famed investigative reporter Seymour Hersh recently described the JSOC as an “executive assassination wing” controlled for many years by the office of former Vice President Dick Cheney.

The choice of Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal to become the new U.S. commander in Afghanistan has been hailed by Defence Secretary Robert Gates and national news media as ushering in a new unconventional approach to counterinsurgency.

But McChrystal’s background sends a very different message from the one claimed by Gates and the news media. His long specialisation in counter-terrorism operations suggests an officer who is likely to have more interest in targeted killings than in the kind of politically sensitive counterinsurgency programmes that the Obama administration has said it intends to carry out.

In announcing the extraordinary firing of Gen. David McKiernan and the nomination of McChrystal to replace him, Gates said that the mission in Afghanistan “requires new thinking and new approaches by our military leaders” and praised McChrystal for his “unique skill set in counterinsurgency”.

Howard Zinn: “I Wish Obama Would Listen to MLK”

Legendary historian Howard Zinn joins us to talk about war, torture and the teaching of history. Zinn says Obama had Obama heeded the lessons of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., he wouldn’t be escalating US attacks abroad and increasing the size of the US military budget. We also play excerpts of the forthcoming documentary, The People Speak, featuring dramatic readings based on Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States and Voices of a People’s History of the United States. Witnesses testified about the Bush Administration’s detention and interrogation program for prisoners and enemy combatants. This was the first hearing on the topic since the release of the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel’s (OLC) memos on the subject which authorized techniques many analysts considered torture. In their testimony Mr. Zelikow and Mr. Soufan said that there were some strong objections to the torture policies and that they were ineffective in providing useful intelligence.

Sharif Ahmed, Somalia’s president, has approved a bill legislating the implementation of Islamic law in the country, a key demand from armed fighters for their co-operation with his government.

Despite the move, Somalias opposition Islamic Party insists that Sharia can only be implemented if and when all foreign forces leave the country.

Al Jazeera’s Jamal Elshayyal explains.

Dozens of schoolgirls in Afghanistan have been taken to hospital after a gas attack on their school. It is the second such incident in recent weeks. Police in the northwestern Parwan province say the schoolgirls were exposed to toxic vapours. Taliban sympathisers who do not think girls should be educated, are the prime suspects. Outgoing NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer is to be succeeded by Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who resigned his position as Danish prime minister to accept the post, on August 1st of this year.

During the past two and a half weeks Scheffer has been paying a series of farewell visits to newly acquired NATO territories like Bulgaria, Romania, Slovenia, Albania and Croatia and to former sovereign nations marked for closer integration and full absorption, Macedonia and Finland.

In the time-honored tradition of retiring Roman proconsuls and British viceroys, he has been making valedictory tours of inspection to admire his handiwork. During his tenure as chief of the world’s only military bloc the Alliance added nine new members – Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia – three-quarters the amount of member states NATO had when it was formed sixty years ago.

Reviewing Ellen Brown’s “Web of Debt:” Part III

This is the third in a series of articles on Ellen Brown’s superb 2007 book titled “Web of Debt,” now updated in a December 2008 third edition. It tells “the shocking truth about our money system, (how it) trapped us in debt, and how we can break free.” This article focuses on global debt entrapment.

Global Debt Enslavement – From Gold Reserves to Petrodollars

“The gold standard (while it lasted) was a necessary step in giving bankers’ ‘fractional reserve’ legitimacy, but the ruse could not be sustained indefinitely” because exiting gold to defray foreign debts results in money backing it to be withdrawn from circulation. The result – contraction, recession, or depression, the very problem that forced FDR to drop the gold standard to prevent an even greater collapse. In 1971, Nixon did it permanently “when foreign creditors threatened to exhaust US gold reserves by cashing in their paper dollars for gold.”

John Kennedy was the last president to challenge Wall Street, contends Donald Gibson in one of his two books about him. In “Battling Wall Street: The Kennedy Presidency,” he said that Kennedy opposed “free trade,” believed industry should serve the nation, and that America should sustain its independence by developing cheap energy. That “pitted him against the oil/banking cartel,” intent on “raising oil prices to prohibitive levels in order to” entrap the world in a “web of debt.”

Evidence also suggests that “Kennedy crossed the bankers by seeking to revive a silver-backed currency,” independent of the Fed. In fact, on June 4, 1963, he issued Executive Order (EO) 11110 giving the president authority to issue currency. He then ordered the Treasury to print over $4 billion of “United States Notes” in place of Federal Reserve Notes. Some believe that he intended to replace them all when enough of the new currency was in circulation – to return money-creation power to the government where it belongs.

For over a century and a half the core of the wealth of the United States rested on a level and healthy foundation of small farmers. They produced bountiful nutritious crops that allow the United States to grow and to help feed themselves and a good part of the world. Sadly, that time is over.

Large corporate farms are now the norm, and they are often controlled or owned outright by the processed food industry. This is the industry that provides a steady diet of adulterated food to the public. With the Genetically Modified Organism seeds now produced by the Rockefeller controlled Monsanto corporation, corporations have even manage to adulterate seeds.
