North Korea has successfully carried out an underground nuclear test, officials in the country have confirmed.

North Korea has announced it has carried out an underground nuclear explosion, and there are reports it test-fired a short-range missile just hours later.
The United States and the European Union have sharply criticised the move, while Russia has expressed concern.
Japan’s prime minister says it will seek a new United Nations resolution to condemn the nuclear test.
