Friday: Key Vote on Single Payer Healthcare + Fax them now!

Dandelion Salad

Updated: added another email with a link to fax the members of this committee and your representative.

from an email from http://www.democrats.com

At last night’s press conference on healthcare, President Obama shocked the media with a very inconvenient truth:

“I want to cover everybody. Now, the truth is that, unless you have a single-payer system, in which everybody is automatically covered, then you’re probably not going to reach every single individual.”

So why won’t our elected Democrats in Washington fight for a single-payer system that will cover everyone? Especially when it’s the only system that will actually save money by eliminating 30% in utterly wasted overhead from greedy insurance giants?

A dedicated group of 86 Democrats are fighting for single-payer ( H.R. 676 ), and they need our help today.

The battle over single-payer is in the House Energy & Commerce Committee (E&C). The committee was supposed to vote on Rep. Anthony Weiner’s single-payer amendment on Monday, but chairman Henry Waxman keeps postponing the vote because it might pass – just like the Kucinich Amendment for a single-payer state option passed on July 17 by a shocking 25-19 bi-partisan majority.

Lean Yes
Diana DeGette CO01 202-225-4431
Jane Harman CA36 202-225-8220
Christopher Murphy CT05 202-225-4476
Frank Pallone NJ06 202-225-4671 @FrankPallone
Bobby Rush IL01 202-225-4372

Today we’re told the vote could be tomorrow ( Friday ). This week we asked our 600,000 supporters to call all 35 Democrats. Based on your calls, we identified 9 solid yes and 5 more lean yes:
http://www.democrats.com/single-payer-committee-whip

Can you call the 5 lean yes and convince them to become solid yes on Rep. Anthony Weiner’s single-payer amendment in the Energy & Commerce Committee?

Hill staffers privately tell us your calls are “very helpful.” Please post a comment about your calls so we can update our whip list here:
http://www.democrats.com/single-payer-committee-whip

In addition, these 14 Democrats won’t say whether they support single-payer, or claim there aren’t enough votes for it to pass. But if they all vote for it, it will pass! See if you can convince them.

Also, be sure to send our Single Payer petition to your Representatives, and forward it to everyone you know who needs and deserves better healthcare:

And finally if you can be in DC on Thursday July 30, join us to celebrate the 44th birthday of Medicare and rally/lobby for single-payer:

Thanks for all you do!

Updated

Thanks again to Connie for sending this to DS.

From an email from http://www.1payer.net/

The thrice-delayed Weiner amendment that will replace the House TriCommittee bill with the single payer bill HR 676 is finally coming to a vote tomorrow. We won on the Kucinich amendment for state single-payer.  We can win on the Weiner amendment. But you have to call and fax. Not just call.  Not just fax.  Both.

This new fax goes to all the Democrats who might vote yes.

Six Democrats on the Committee are leaning toward voting yes, and a call and fax from you could nudge them firmly into the “yes” column:

Diana DeGette CO01 202-225-4431
Jane Harman CA36 202-225-8220
Christopher Murphy CT05 202-225-4476
Frank Pallone NJ06 202-225-4671
Bobby Rush IL01 202-225-4372
Peter Welch VT00 202-225-4115

That’s a LOT of faxes and they might not all get through in time so you have to CALL TOO.

Fifteen Democrats (below) won’t commit either way, or they say that there aren’t enough votes for the amendment to pass.  But if they vote yes, it will pass. Do what you can to convince them.  Send them the new fax too and then pick up your phone and call.

Rick Boucher VA09 202-225-3861
Bruce Braley IA01 202-225-2911
G.K. Butterfield NC01 202-225-3101
Lois Capps CA23 202-225-3601
Kathy Castor FL11 202-225-3376
John Dingell MI15 202-225-4071
Charles Gonzalez TX20 202-225-3236
Gene Green TX29 202-225-1688
Jay Inslee WA01 202-225-6311
Doris Matsui CA05 202-225-7163
Jerry McNerney CA11 202-225-1947
John Sarbanes MD03 202-225-4016
Bart Stupak MI01 202-225-4735
Betty Sutton OH13 202-225-3401
Henry Waxman (Chair) CA30 202-225-3976

President Obama said it himself last night in his press conference:

“I want to cover everybody. Now, the truth is that, unless you have a single-payer system, in which everybody is automatically covered, then you’re probably not going to reach every single individual.”

This vote can make it happen.  You can make it happen.

We have now sent over 205 thousand faxes supporting single payer Medicare For All to Congress.  So don’t stop now.  keep up the pressure.

  1. All this stuff I was going to do on July 30th and on…I guess I cant do them now. It sure would get my mind off things. But my vision and memory are pretty bad, I guess (I thought it was just something else). What wil I do if I cant read? Cant get online? Cant think straight enough to run my house—but the number one thing, and, it should not be, is, how wil I pay for this…..that just should not be.

I think i’m still in shock….I should start a video diary somewhere or something for other backers of single payer with inadequate ( or NONE!) care but I dont know how to do it—maybe sis will get me video camera, an old one…sorry for just thinking out loud..i’m still in shock I think…thanks for helping me think…

    • Being in shock, I would think, would be quite natural in your situation. Do you have family close by? Friends that can check in on you regularly?

Expressing your feelings during this time is important either through writing about them or like you mentioned, a video diary. Having a diary of some sorts is good especially if you are having memory difficulties and you could bring the diary to doctor visits.

Can your doctor suggest to you others in your area with similar health problems you can contact for support? Those who have already been through it can be supportive to you and others going through it now.

      • ds–It was not fair of me to just post this, but I had just found out and i read this article and was planning hte july 30th trip…

My sister is fkying n from NYC on Tuesday and we’re going to go from there…she has had breast cancer and knows what to do, etc. thanks for your concern, very much…..

        • KDelphi, you always free to post whatever you like here. So glad that your sister is coming to see you and that you’ll both make it to DC.

Huge hugs to you, my friend.

  2. ds–Thank you…that is what my Med HMO says! My family wants me to try to go to a major med center East (they all live on the east coast)–I hate to ask them to pay for that, and they really dont have the money….just think if I did not have family members who cared?? There are many who do not…

This “health care situation” is just unbearable…the US just needs to become cifvilized and take the profit out of health care. It is simply immoral.

This is distressing enough, but, there is no other industrialized country where I would have to be worrying about payment on top of all the other decisions….HR 676, please, people, please…

  4. PLEASE support single payer health care!

I’ve just been diagnosed with a brain tumor and , now, I have to let some inexperienced medical student poke around in my head or just hope it doesnt grow!! My dad died of a cancerous brain tumor, so I guess I dont really have a choice…

I was going to go to the rally on July 30th , but I have to have an EEG (had an MRI)–PLEASE GO FOR ME and reazlize that there are millions of us! Take the profit out and put the heart back into medicine in the uS!

I am going to try to videotape some of my experience and pass it on to Congresspeopelewho are “leaning”–I really need to see a good, experienced neurosurgeon on this but I just cant ask my family to pay for this, and, if I did, Mediczad would disqualify me!

Dems plan wouldnt help me at all…this med student terrifies me!!!!!

    Thanks…

    • Oh, KDelphi, I am so sorry to hear about your serious health problems.

Are you saying that Medicaid will only cover a medical student to take care of you? That doesn’t make sense.

My thoughts and prayers are with you, my friend.
