I wrote a small article yesterday about an e-mail I had received from  Commondreams.org. The article begged the question of why didn’t the staff at Commondreams.org understand what and who Barack Obama was before now? This thought led me to wonder if any of the so-called “progressive” journalists ever bothered to vet Barack Obama? When I say “vet”, I’m bringing up the question of whether they actually checked his political history or even bothered to see what corporate entities were paying for his campaign? As journalists, wouldn’t you expect that these writers would have investigated Barack Obama before they started to write of his “glorious” exploits?

I know that most “progressive” writers studied McCain and Sarah Palin’s backgrounds. There wasn’t much that the GOP couldn’t hide from them. What I can’t understand to this day, is why weren’t Obama’s corporate ties brought to the fore? This is particularly apt after the discoveries that were brought out about Goldman-Sachs. They just happened to be one of the largest bankrollers for the future president. I wrote about it several times. You would believe that some astute so-called “journalist” would have taken the hint from me and pulled up opensecrets.org, The Center for Responsive Politics site that tracks campaign donations. The information is still there to see, that is, if anyone is at all interested. Just by following his biggest contributors, you could see what direction Obama was going to take. Here are eleven of his largest contributors, just in case going to opensecrets.org is just too much to ask of you;

University of California $1,564,490, Goldman Sachs $994,795, Harvard University $854,017, Microsoft Corp $833,617, Google Inc $803,436Citigroup Inc $699,790, JPMorgan Chase & Co $695,132, Time Warner $589,334, Sidley Austin LLP $588,598, Stanford University $586,557, National Amusements Inc $550,683, UBS AG $543,219

(Because of contribution limits, organizations that bundle together many individual contributions are often among the top donors to presidential candidates. These contributions can come from the organization’s members or employees (and their families). The organization may support one candidate, or hedge its bets by supporting multiple candidates. Groups with national networks of donors – like EMILY’s List and Club for Growth – make for particularly big bundlers.) Source; Opensecrets.org

Obama supported immunity for the Telecoms after he was first against it. Where were the progressive journalists and websites when he rolled over on that before the election? I’d like to remind everyone reading this that the “progressive” media was absolutely up in arms over the wiretaps by the Bush administration and some actually called for charges to be brought against him and the Telecom’s. Why, when Obama voted for immunity, didn’t they scream about that? Was it because it was Obama that was helping the Telecom industry and Bush to break the law?

The more I see the Obama administration in action, the more I ask myself where are all of those principled journalists that called Bush out for every war-mongering, unconstitutional thing he did? Here Obama is bringing back “preventive detention” without habeas corpus, military commissions without habeas corpus (that he railed about with Bush), and is enlarging the war in Afghanistan and attacking Pakistan and in the process “Balkanizing” that country.

You don’t see the “progressive” websites churning out articles about the growth of NATO in a world that doesn’t have a Warsaw Pact to justify its existence! I didn’t read any criticism when Obama and Biden both condemned Russia for “attacking” Georgia when the facts were that it was Georgia that attacked Russia!

Israel is a thorn is America’s side. The recent incursion into Gaza was a criminal act by the Israelis. Try to write a piece about that and post it on most of your “progressive” websites and see how far you will get. Your article might be on for 30 seconds before you get banned for being “anti-Semitic”.

I’m not writing this in the hope that some of the so-called “progressive” sites and writers will change. I feel that they are beyond redemption. I also believe that the people who lambasted Bush and now coddle Obama know exactly what they are doing. Principle has absolutely nothing to do with it…politics does. As long as the wars are being waged by a Democrat, and our constitutional rights subverted by a Democrat, somehow it’s all ok. No, I’m not writing to change what these “progressives” are doing, I’m writing this so that the people reading this will understand where the outrage went. The sites that took Bush apart and gave people hope are now remaining silent while we delve deeper into the abyss of war and restraints on our constitutional rights.

I was going to list some of the “progressive” sites that really need to be shunned by anyone with half a brain. I’m not going to do that because it would be an insult to your intelligence. I’m sure that you can figure it out by yourself. All one must do to understand just what is going on is to look at how many writers complain about the Obama administration, and those that complain about Israel’s policies there are still writing on these sites. I believe you will find most of these people are banned. I’m banned and so are many of the people that think as I do. It seems that if you don’t follow the Democratic Party line, you are anathema.

Maybe, just maybe, it’s time to wake up and smell the corruption. The Democrats are not going to do anything that will change the status quo or the direction that this nation is headed in. I’d like to say it is time for another political party but that won’t happen either. What Americans who have any sense need to do is to stop believing just about everything the two corporate political parties put forward. The nation has already bailed out a corrupted banking and investment system that deserved to implode. What did the average citizen get out of it? These are the same entities that helped elect Obama! Think about that for a moment and the only thing you can say after you do is “damn… screwed again”!

It would have been better if the Federal government had given that money directly to the American people in the form of vouchers. Richard Cook, a former NASA economist, suggested $1,500 per month per adult to be spent for necessities. Think of the economic boom that would have brought! Small businesses would have had a hard time keeping up with demand for goods and services. The government would have gotten much of that money back in tax receipts. Instead, they gave it to the banks and let them squander most of us and then didn’t let the public in on who got what.

If I got one person thinking, I’ve accomplished what I set out to do. If you start reading these “progressive” websites with one eye open, you are now ahead of the game. The sad truth is that the Democrats are no better and no worse than the Republicans. They are two sides of the same coin. They work for the interests that keep them in business and believe me, it isn’t you, and it damn sure isn’t me.

One other thing, the sites that published this must be straight-up, or you wouldn’t be reading this in the first place.

  2. I’m afraid that the truth is being clouded by emotion here. Obama is still pressing for an expansion of NATO, the encirclement of Russia, China and Iran ans still supporting the nation of Israel that becomes more criminal with each passing day.

  3. I’m astonished at this sudden and, for this blog, unusual convening of Obama bashers and masked haters all under one roof. Where have they been all that time, when hundreds of serious issues were presented and debated on this forum – I guess bashing Obama seems to draw more excitement and participation than most of the national issues?

Obama, my friend, was vetted to the bone first by Hillary’s people and again by McCain’s people, who turned every possible stone to find any thing negative on the guy – something, anything that could tarnish the reputation of this, in my humble opinion, once in a generation, under-appreciated guy – and they all failed to come up with anything credible and worth mentioning to implicate him or pin on him. Those were experts specialized in digging up dirt on people, much better at it than all those pseudo-experts who, somehow, thought that they were onto something that all the experts just missed, or worse yet, that all those experts, mostly fanatic Republicans, were bought by this underground, clandestine alliance of corporate America who merely pretend to support the Republicans when they actually supported Obama all along.

True, Obama isn’t perfect, but who for God’s sake is? I may question, and had my reservations about some of his policies and decisions, but I have no doubt that his heart was in the right place. And let’s not forget that he is a politician after all, and when dealing with other politicians, especially the worst and most deceitful kind, he has to play the game, as it is played, in order to win and implement his policies and plans. But, all that aside, he is as good, as clean and as honest with his intentions as they come. What the republicans offer in return, in terms of leadership, intelligence, vision and ideas that make sense, leaves much to be desired. They simply got nothing to offer America, and haven’t in a long time; they are vacant of anything of substance while he does, whether those who hate him like it or not.

History will speak of Obama as a great president who tried hard, worked hard and really wanted to fix the mountain of internal and external disasters left for him to sort out and clean up by the worst administration in the US’ history.

  4. ”we live under corporate occupied territory” Ralph Nader.
the term progressive ceased to be a word with teeth when in 2000 we had a chnace to put Nader in the white house and most progressives voted for Gore.

  5. The point here is not that Obama isn’t one of us, we can all figure that out. The point is who are the so-called “progressives” out there supporting? It would be foolish of us to believe that they are supporting the center-right because they don’t know any better. They understand all too well where Obama and the Democrats are taking us. They see all too well what NATO has become. They realize that we are attempting to encircle both Russia and Iran. If they are not stupid what are they? In a word….bought.

  6. The word Progressive is a misnomer. It has no real meaning. There is no one definition for the word; therefore, the alleged progressive journalist can’t seem to criticisze Obeyme because they suffer from an identity crisis.

This is not the case with the Dumbcrats and Repugnacans and their corporate lobbiest. They run the country and that is becoming more and more obvious.

It is only when “We The People” unite that we will be able to to take back the country from corporate interests.

  7. I volunteered recently for a “progressive” organization in Montana, Forward Montana. My time with them was short as I learned more and more about their “progressive” ideas. Health Care Reform was their biggest issue and my biggest issue with them. They were tools of HCAN and as such Baucus/Corporate-for-profit-health-care. They supported people in their desire to “keep the coverage that they now have” while attacking advocates of single payer categorizing them as ideological fools. They repeated right wing talking points emphasizing choice while avoiding any rhetoric that would oppose the status quo corporate interest. They called themselves “progressive” while denouncing progressive ideology, causing more harm to the hopes of any real progressive achievement in Montana, than any radical right wing group. They have divided and conquered from within, serving to support their real interests, Blue Dogs, Baucus and Testor, and the corporations for which they work.

  8. I have tried to get on Common Dreams for twenty years with articles that were too radical (Marxist) for them. It is a farce designed to keep the population concerned with who is better-tweedledum or tweedledee. The ruling class will never allow anyone in power who will really change America and allow a redistribution of wealth in a downward direction or stop the imperialist wars which benefit their wealth. The only answer is what Percy Bysshe Shelley advocated two hundred years ago:
    “Rise like lions after slumber
    In unconquerable numbers
Shake your chains to Earth like dew
Which in sleep had fallen on you
Ye are many, they are few.”

  9. In total agreement – we essentially have a shadow government run by the corporations. It’s just that Obama is a rock star president, and it will take a while for people to get it through their heads that it’s the same wine in a different bottle. I understand how people who are not savvy about where they get their news or info about the government see that Obama is an intelligent, charasmatic, gifted orator – along with being our first black president – and want to believe he must be above the dirty politics we’ve gotten used to.

However, supporting whatever Obama is doing, at this point, is just a new way of staying in denial, looking at the improved surface details of our new president, who is nonetheless continuing to do what the GWB administration was doing. I still feel the journalists at Common Dreams see all of this and are aware that Obama is a mere neo-liberal and serves the interests of the corporate elite/ ruling class, not the taxpaying working people.

Thank you for your article and comments. 🙂

  10. The corporatist wing of both parties run the government.

Very good article, many of us think as you do.
