The United States does not value jobs and trade unions; General Motors cut ten thousand jobs across Europe at its Opel unit in favour of Christmas bonuses. That’s the view of Max Keiser, finance critic and former stockbroker. He commented to RT on GM abandoning plans to sell Opel to a consortium of Canadian firm Magna and Russia’s Sberbank.

I understand that those who care deeply about the earth are expressing very good intentions with congressional climate change legislation. But there is already evidence that this legislation is rewarding the very corporations that are responsible for worldwide ecological damage and facilitating another reckless Wall Street casino – with devastating consequences for the financial underclass – while doing little to repair the damage to our planet.
The cap and trade market operating through the Chicago Climate Exchange was set up by Goldman Sachs and Al Gore’s company, Generation Investment Management, which is also staffed by Goldman Sachs executives. GIM and Goldman Sachs each have a 10% stake in the Chicago Climate Exchange which in turn has a 50% stake in the European Climate Exchange. Trading carbon credits is projected to become the new multi-trillion dollar commodity bubble.

But Zinn may be best known for writing A People’s History of the United States. The book strives to reveal the stories of those he feels have been left out of the established American narrative. Tomorrow night, Zinn will be the keynote speaker on an issue he’s taken on in recent years. The 9th annual Campaign to End the Death Penalty convention takes place tomorrow on the University of Chicago campus.

With the Copenhagen climate summit just a month away, a new investigative series looks at how rural Brazilians are being displaced so their forest can be turned into carbon offsets for some of the world’s biggest polluters, including General Motors and Chevron. With deforestation amounting to a fifth of the world’s emissions, planting and preserving trees are seen as key elements to offset pollution. We speak to Mark Schapiro of the Center for Investigative Reporting. While investigators probe for a motive behind the mass shooting at the Fort Hood military base in Texas Thursday, in which an army psychiatrist is suspected of killing 13 people, military personnel at the base are in shock as the incident “brings the war home”.
“Fort Hood is pretty much a ghost town right now,” Specialist Michael Kern, an active duty veteran of the Iraq war, told IPS by telephone. “Most units gave their soldiers the day off. Security is heightened all over. There are soldiers on guard everywhere. In my opinion, they are afraid of another attack.”
Kern, who is based at Fort Hood, served in Iraq from March 2007 to March 2008.
“We’re all in shock,” Kern added, “Every single person that I’ve talked to is in shock. I’m surprised this hits so close to home, but at the same time, I knew something like this was going to happen given what else is happening – the war is coming home, and something needs to be done.”

Come on folks, it’s just good sense, there is no way the Empire can actually win the war in Afghanistan. As I have stated before it’s not about ‘winning’ but occupation. Afghanistan is basically a stepping stone on the way to some place else and leaving an oil pipeline behind with a friendly government in place to protect it. Ah, but the best laid plans of mice and men etc…
And this is why it bears no comparison to the idiotic occupation that the Soviets got sucked into, except for the slaughter of course. But from a strategic and economic perspective, along with Iran, Pakistan and India, Afghanistan commands the entrance to East Asia and there’s gold in them thar hills!
