The Caribbean nation of Haiti has been hit by its strongest earthquake in 200 years, causing what is being described as “a catastrophe of major proportions”.

Hundreds of people are feared dead after a massive earthquake measuring 7.0 on the Richter scale struck the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince at 2153 GMT on Tuesday.
A tsunami alert was immediately issued for the Caribbean region, including Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and the Bahamas, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

Haiti has been shaken by a powerful earthquake – the largest in the history of the region. Buildings have been destroyed and dozens of people are feared dead in the capital Port-au-Prince.
The 7.0 earthquake has damaged communications, so there were no immediate reports of casualties after the quake. Two strong aftershocks followed shortly after.
