The commander of US forces in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, has hinted at the possibility of placing senior Taliban militants in the new Afghan government.

In an interview with the Financial Times on Monday, McChrystal said that political negotiations with leaders of the Taliban could help foster security and stability in conflict-plagued Afghanistan.

It’s a controversial idea that some say is the only way to bring peace to Afghanistan … How to convince members of the Taliban to put down their guns, and bring them into the political fold.

Al Jazeera has learned that secret talks have been held, and an ambitious plan is underway to get fighters lay down their arms, in return for money and jobs.

David Chater has this exclusive report.

  1. Isn’t this guy generous! The West seems to forget – rather conveniently – that the US supported the Taliban in their fight against the Russians. And another matter the West forgets: Afghanistan is the Taliban’s country, not ours.
