by Congressman Dennis Kucinich
Washington, Feb 5, 2010

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) yesterday wrote to Attorney General Eric Holder following news reports that Americans have been included on targeted assassination lists maintained by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). The reports indicate that the President has authorized military operations with the express understanding that Americans might be killed under this policy.  In the letter, Kucinich requests the legal basis for revoking the constitutional rights of any American citizens. On January 15, 2010, the Pentagon released the first ever list of prisoners held in the Bagram Theater Internment Facility, the main US prison in Afghanistan for the last eight years (PDF). An annotated version of the list is available here. In a previous article, “Dark Revelations in the Bagram Prisoner List,” I examined the stories of the foreign prisoners rendered to Bagram from other countries, and described the legal challenges mounted on their behalf, explaining how, last March, three of these men won their habeas corpus petitions in a US court, in a ruling that has been challenged by the Obama administration.

I also explained the use of a secret facility within Bagram as part of a network of secret CIA prisons in Afghanistan, and asked pointed questions about the whereabouts of a number of men, known to have been held in secret prisons in Afghanistan, who are not on the list and whose apparent disappearance has never been explained — and also covered this topic in another recent article, “UN Secret Detention Report Asks, ‘Where Are The CIA Ghost Prisoners?’

“NEW YORK (CBS, 1/12/10) Pat Robertson, the American Christian televangelist and host of “The 700 Club,” said that Haitians need to have a ‘great turning to god’ while he was reporting on the devastating 7.0 earthquake that shook the island nation … ‘Something happened a long time ago in Haiti and people might not want to talk about…  They were under the heel of the French, you know Napoleon the third and whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said “We will serve you if you will get us free from the prince.” True story. And so the devil said, “Ok it’s a deal.” And they kicked the French out. The Haitians revolted and got something themselves free. But ever since they have been cursed by one thing after another.’ ”

Actually, Pat, it was not (Louis) Napoleon III (1852-1870) against whom the Haitian slave revolt took place but the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte (1798-1815), but when you are making up stuff like you do, what difference do the facts make?  Now there was a huge amount of controversy, not about him getting his facts wrong, but about the content of what he said.  Now while many including myself regard what he said as an outrageous slander against the Haitian people, another question occurred to me: how does he know?  How does he know that in fact the Haitian people made a pact with the devil, whenever they did it, and that because of that pact, made however may years ago, they suffered this horrible earthquake now.

There are several memorial services and events being planned for Howard Zinn whom The New York Times called a “historian, shipyard worker, civil rights activist and World War II bombardier, when he passed away at age 87 late last month.”

His legion of friends, students, admirers and colleagues will be out in force reminding the country about his impact as a civic leader, motivational teacher, author of the ever more popular book A People’s History of the United States, and all around fine, compassionate, and level-headed human being.

Coleen Rowley shares with us her views on the latest spectacle surrounding the Christmas Day foiled terrorist attempt, and how it reflects on policies that were implemented after 9/11. She provides us with insight into the pretend investigations carried out by the 9/11 Commission, and how they conducted many of their interviews of FBI witnesses and experts inside the FBI HQ and offices. Ms. Rowley talks about the absence of real investigations and accountability in almost any government related wrong doing and issues, our shameful treatment of inmates in Guantanamo detention center, the alarming desensitization of our people bolstered by the culprit mainstream media, and much more.

The defense chiefs of all 28 NATO nations and an undisclosed number of counterparts from non-Alliance partners gathered in Istanbul, Turkey on February 4 to begin two days of meetings focused on the war in Afghanistan, the withdrawal of military forces from Kosovo in the course of transferring control of security operations to the breakaway province’s embryonic army (the Kosovo Security Force) and “the transformation efforts required to best conduct the full range of NATO’s agreed missions.” [1]

Istanbul was the site of the bloc’s 2004 summit which accounted for the largest expansion in its 60-year history – seven new Eastern European nations – and its strengthening military partnerships with thirteen Middle Eastern and African nations under the Istanbul Cooperation Initiative.

Our request to interview President Hugo Chavez of VZ has finally been granted.

Cindy and a film crew will be heading down to VZ on February 25th not only to interview Chavez (which will also air on the audio and video Soapbox), but to film in communities and interview Venezuelans about the state of affairs there and to be witness to what a grassroots revolution looks like.

To top the entire trip off, Cindy and Crew will be heading down to Uruguay with President Chavez to attend Jose Alberto (El Pepe) Mujica’s inauguration.

This entire trip will be captured on film and edited into a documentary about the populist (anti-Empire) uprising in South America to help foster a pan-Americanism that is needed for Peace on our continent.

Another U.S. War? Obama Threatens China and Iran by Shamus Cooke

Global Research, February 1, 2010

The possibility of yet another U.S. war became more real last week, when the Obama administration sharply confronted both China and Iran.  The first aggressive act was performed by Obama’s Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, who “warned” China that it must support serious economic sanctions against Iran (an act of war).

Clinton said: “China will be under a lot of pressure to recognize the destabilizing effect that a nuclear-armed Iran would have, from which they receive a significant percentage of their oil supply.”

The implication here is that China will be cut off from a major energy source if they do not support U.S. foreign policy — this, too, would equal an act of war.
