On January 19, 2010, I wrote to you about news reports that you were considering dropping the proposal to create an independent and free-standing Consumer Financial Protection Agency (CFPA). In the last few days news reports indicate that you are advancing the notion that the CFPA should be housed within the Federal Reserve. The Federal Reserve is always a step short and a day late in protecting consumers. To house the CFPA within the Federal Reserve is to doom it to failure.

As I said in that letter,

In addition to mandatory private health insurance premiums, we may soon be hit with a “mandatory savings” tax and other belt-tightening measures urged by the President’s new budget task force. These radical austerity measures are not only unnecessary but will actually make matters worse. The push for “fiscal responsibility” is based on bad economics. Continue reading

Some vultures have feathers, but some have fancy offices and huge homes. Tonight, BBC investigative reporter Greg Palast follows the trail of one “vulture fund” chief, from a locked office door in New York to mud-brick houses in Africa.

How strange. When I arrive at the offices of Eric Hermann at hedge fund FH International, just outside New York City, the company’s corporate sign is unbolted from the wall and the suite number removed from the door.

But wait … I hear noises inside the office. Huh? I knock on the locked door and out steps the office building’s security manager.

“Guys, they don’t want to be interviewed. They don’t want to be seen. So we are going to have to ask you to leave the building.”

Where’s Martin Heidegger when you need him? Well, of course, he’s six feet under, and I certainly don’t want to wish undo harm upon anyone; but it seems with each passing day, that it would really be a boon to the American public if many of our ‘leaders’ in Washington would follow him down there also. But in a time in this country when we really need deep thinking, and we don’t need the same old talking points and cookie cutter ’solutions’; we seem to be getting more of the same old stuff.

Amid an escalating humanitarian situation Gaza, U.S. Rep. Brian Baird (D-WA) is calling on the United States to break Israel’s blockade to deliver aid relief to the Palestinians living in the strip. Baird says the US needs to show Israel it is serious about resolving the Palestinian crisis – even if it means threatening to withhold money or military aid from its biggest ally. The Democratic congressman’s efforts to lift the Israeli blockade on Gaza are being met with stiff resistance in America. Baird discusses the taboo against questioning US support for Israel in US politics, as well as the need to begin negotiating with Hamas to help resolve the conflict.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that predatory bankers in possession of great fortunes are in want of media lackeys, especially after savaging the American Dream.  Actually not, considering the corporate media outlets reinforcing the clownish social gospel from Lloyd Blankfein of Goldman Sachs: conglomerates do good, indeed “God’s work.” Continue reading

Last month news reports confirmed that the United States is to station interceptor missiles in Bulgaria and Romania as an extension of the Pentagon’s European (and international) missile shield project. Details are still forthcoming, but what is all but certain is that the missiles are to be land-based versions of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System with Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) medium-range anti-ballistic missiles, though there is already speculation that even more advanced deployments are planned.

Until last month discussions of U.S. missile shield plans to replace the earlier one of basing ground-based midcourse missiles in Poland and an accompanying X-band missile radar facility in the Czech Republic centered on the Baltic and Eastern Mediterranean Seas and on Israel and the Persian Gulf, with Turkey and the South Caucasus expected to be the next links.

Israeli army tanks opened fire on northern Gaza Strip, killing a Palestinian and wounding another near the town of Beit Lahia, Palestinian sources say.

According to witnesses living in the area, the army tanks fired four artillery shells at the area on Monday, DPA reported.

The head of Gaza emergency services, Muawiya Hassanein, also confirmed that a Palestinian was killed, saying they recovered the body of Mohammed Ghaban, 20, who was killed by shrapnel from Israeli shelling near Beit Lahia.

Medics at Kamal Odwan Hospital earlier said that one Palestinian, who had been critically wounded, was admitted to the hospital.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the attack.

Secret papers withheld by Chilcot inquiry reveal Foreign Office fears over invasion

An invasion of Iraq was discussed within the Government more than two years before military action was taken – with Foreign Office mandarins warning that an invasion would be illegal, that it would claim “considerable casualties” and could lead to the breakdown of Iraq, The Independent can reveal.

The extent of Whitehall opposition to the policy eventually backed by Tony Blair emerges just three days before Gordon Brown will appear at the Iraq Inquiry, where he will be asked to explain his role in the Government’s decision to invade.
