Calling All Rebels by Chris Hedges

capitalism is the crisis

Image by Alex Cameron via Flickr

There are no constraints left to halt America’s slide into a totalitarian capitalism. Electoral politics are a sham. The media have been debased and defanged by corporate owners. The working class has been impoverished and is now being plunged into profound despair. The legal system has been corrupted to serve corporate interests. Popular institutions, from labor unions to political parties, have been destroyed or emasculated by corporate power. And any form of protest, no matter how tepid, is blocked by an internal security apparatus that is starting to rival that of the East German secret police. The mounting anger and hatred, coursing through the bloodstream of the body politic, make violence and counter-violence inevitable. Brace yourself. The American empire is over. And the descent is going to be horrifying.

Mario Savio’s Speech: You’ve got to put your bodies upon the gears (1964)

dirtytrainers
Dec 2, 2012

Mario Savio’s speech before the FSM sit-in.

2nd December 1964 “There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can’t take part; you can’t even passively take part, and you’ve got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you’ve got to make it stop. And you’ve got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you’re free, the machine will be prevented from working at all!”

  1. ‘It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees’. This is already happening and before too long it will ignite into a fireball.

  4. Excellent Article! The rebel in me has been bubbling up… I can hardly control my anger and am trying to build my courage. I’ve been focusing on how to go to Boards, Councils etc and ask for the change I want to see without coming off as an angry enemy. I think I have my answer. Any criticism is seen as counterproductive and the messenger an enemy. when in fact, the only way anything has ever improved is because someone stood up and demanded it. The anger is there and the courage will follow when that sense of responsibility and rage overpower the need to feel safe and well, liked.

  5. By calling workng Americans morons, Peggy, you are joining the elite in thinking the masses are too dumb or lazy to do anything about injustice. People are waking up because they are suffering. If we can just keep people sober enough to feel it, then all hell is going to break loose.

  6. The Left-Right fight keeps people focused on nonsense. This is a fight against a very smart, very powerful elite. They finally figured out that they don’t have to sell stuff to make money, so they don’t have to give enough money to “the people” to buy what is being sold. The market is global now, and there are enough customers globally for the elite to ignore what happens in individual countries, be it Iceland or the United States.

There was a time that the rich realized that they had to allow the other 98% enough to be satisfied with their lives. That rule seems to have gone out the window in the past 30 years and the elite are able to slice the cake into smaller slivers thanks to the digital age.

The Chinese have a curse “may you live in interesting times.” I can think of few periods in history that were more interesting now. My only hope is that the situation gets bad enough that people finally have enough and rise up. It was Thomas Jefferson who said that there needed to be a revolution every generation or so to weed out all the corruption that naturally takes root in any system. I think we are way overdue.

  7. The enemy has been named – totalitarian capitalism. It is a first step. Next up is explaining to moron America what that means.

  8. I agree that Hedges veers off track when he starts talking about the threat from the right. The right may offer the coup de grace, but it is the ‘center’, the ‘moderates’ who are doing the heavy lifting for Corporate Fascism.

And it’s so pathetic when even articles that offer some criticism of this administration end plaintively with some variation on ‘will Obama listen?’!! What on earth makes these people think he doesn’t listen and isn’t doing exactly what he wants, having listened?

  9. Chris starts out very clearly stating the problems, unfortunately, he turns this into a right/left paradigm lock. It is not Liberal versus Conservative or Left versus Right, nor has it ever been. It has only ever been between freedom and oppression. Because Hedges and others insist on always turning their critiques into battles between the left and right, they serve, unknowingly or not, the machine that enslaves us all and are not to be trusted.

    • Good point, Weldon.

    • come on weldon, chris didn’t make a big deal out of right vs left, you are&need to leave chris out of it!!!the point he made was if all hell breaks out&the gov. looses control, the pussy left won’t take over, the wacko right will&it’s a point well made!!!! come on all rebels we can and will whip these assholes,so get strong&ready!!!!
