WASHINGTON — The House of Representatives late Sunday passed by a 219 to 212 vote the biggest overhaul of the nation’s health care system in more than four decades, sweeping changes expected to make coverage easier and cheaper to obtain.

The vote sent a bill passed on Dec. 24 by the Senate to Obama for his signature. The House, however, will consider later Sunday another bill that would make major changes, called reconciliation.

Veteran liberal, citizens’ rights campaigner and former US presidential candidate, Ralph Nader, has criticized Israel for possessing nuclear weapons and refusing to join the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

“Israel has 250 nuclear bombs and they don’t belong to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, so they aren’t even part of international law,” Nader told Press TV during an anti-war demonstration in Washington DC on Saturday.

Friday marked the seventh anniversary of the illegal invasion of Iraq, but by now, it seems, the American people have become used to living in a state of perpetual war, even though that war was based on torture and lies. Protestors rallied across the country on Saturday, but the anti-war impetus of the Bush years has not been regained, as I discovered to my sorrow during a brief US tour in November, when I showed the new documentary film, “Outside the Law: Stories from Guantánamo” (directed by Polly Nash and myself) in New York, Washington D.C., and the Bay Area.

The Republican leadership was quick to apologize, Saturday, for racist and anti-gay comments made by some citizens against Democrats who supported the health care bill.

Anti-reform demonstrators at the nation’s capitol yelled racial slurs against Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), who had marched with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and two other congressmen. One demonstrator spit at Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-Mo.). Several protestors yelled anti-gay slurs at Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) “I heard people saying things today that I have not heard since March 15, 1960, when I was marching to try to get off the back of the bus,” Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) told reporters at the Capitol.

A presentation I was invited to give to 500 “movers and shakers” in Berlin, Germany in November of 2008.

No earth-shaking new insights here that aren’t already in my book, and I had to talk slow because English was the audience’s second (or third, or fourth) language.
