When Empire Hits Home, Part 3

Part 1: War, Racism and the Empire of Poverty – When Empire Hits Home

Part 2: Western Civilization and the Economic Crisis: The Impoverishment of the Middle Class

As nations of the world are thrown into a debt crisis, the likes of which have never been seen before, harsh fiscal ‘austerity’ measures will be undertaken in a flawed attempt to service the debts. The result will be the elimination of the middle class. When the middle class is absorbed into the labour class – the lower class – and lose their social, political, and economic foundations, they will riot, rebel, and revolt.

Moody’s is a major ratings agency, which performs financial research and analysis on governments and commercial entities and ranks the credit-worthiness of borrowers. On March 15, Moody’s warned that the US, the UK, Germany, France, and Spain “are all at risk of soaring debt costs and will have to implement austerity plans that threaten ‘social cohesion’.” Further, Moody’s warned that such ‘austerity’ measures increase the potential for ‘social unrest’:

“The Day the Internet Lost” read a full-banner headline on Huffington Post yesterday. The New York Times held a wake for the Internet reporting that Internet service providers can now “block or slow specific sites” and demand that content producers now “pay a fee to ensure delivery of material.”

Yesterday, the DC Circuit court took away the Federal Communications Commission’s role as consumer watchdog, protecting our rights on the Internet. The decision has been widely reported as the end of an era for America’s Internet. But what does the future hold? And what can we do to keep the Internet open and democratic?

“Listen, I can’t get involved. I’ve got work to do. It’s not that I like the Empire; I hate it. But there’s nothing I can do about it right now… It’s all such a long way from here.”

Luke Skywalker in Star Wars

Dear Reader—raise your hand if you don’t know that atrocities happen in war. Now put your hands in the air like you just don’t care.

Psychologist, Robert Jay Lifton, who is a pioneer in the study of what drives otherwise “normal” human beings to commit war crimes calls war: “an atrocity-producing situation.” Atrocities have been committed in every war since the beginning of time, and the sad thing is the barbarity hasn’t decreased. Recently a US soldier tried to justify to me committing atrocities because the “British did it to the Native Americans” in the French-Indian War. This soldier was essentially agreeing with Lifton.
