Walt Cares….. Nuff Said

He’s usually the first one out on the corner, Peace sign in hand. A shade over six feet, a click in front of 81 years, Walt stands tall. His white hair flows in the wind, and you can tell he should take better care of his person….. The way he cares for Fran, his significant other….. Like one cares for a wounded bird. Quite a guy!

If they ever did a story of this life of his, perhaps William Holden would play Walt as the younger, more vibrant and just as valiant fellow. After all, his life’s resume stands taller than he does. He took on the Klan and White Citizens Council in eastern Maryland during the late 50s, when working for Civil Rights. Segway that into being a union organizer for the ILGWU in the 60s and 70s, whereupon he took on the company goons and mob ‘ affiliates ‘ ….. Pistol to his temple and lead pipes to his back. Then, he marched for an end to the Vietnam disgrace, taking on the hard hats with hard heads who thought he and his kind were ‘ Commie scum ‘ . Finally, in the 80s Walt took on the corporate polluters in defense of Minnesota Indians and regular citizens fed up with poisoned wells and groundwater. When this writer met him, Walt was ready, willing and able to stand up to the phony Bush/ Cheney ‘ War on Iraq ‘ . He did , and he still does.

A lifelong progressive Democrat, Walt worked hard and long for Mr. Obama and his party. He is highly disappointed and feels betrayed by his party. Yet, instead of the loneliness of being bitter, Walt writes op eds on what could be done, and stands for Peace and Justice each and every Thursday in New Smyrna Beach. Why does this infirmed 81 year old stand for so many years? ” The question shouldn’t be why I stand…. Rather why they don’t! ” As Walt ends all his writings: ‘ Nuff Said ‘ . Happy 81st Walt !!!
