Debating the Crisis in Thailand: Is Red Shirt Movement a Genuine Grassroots Struggle, or Front for Ousted Ex-PM, Billionaire Tycoon?

In Thailand, the government has rejected an offer by anti-government protesters to enter talks after a bloody week in Bangkok that has left at least thirty-eight protesters dead. Some fear the standoff could lead to an undeclared civil war. The protesters are mostly rural and urban poor who are part of a group called the UDD, the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship, more commonly known as the Red Shirts. We host a debate between Giles Ji Ungpakorn, a Thai dissident living in exile in Britain who supports the Red Shirt movement; and Philip Cunningham, a freelance journalist who has covered Asia for over twenty years. 1. Great post.
All bad news, but cleansing somehow to hear the real deal. Thanks to Lo & Amy.

  2. I fully support the Red shirts, anything against dictatorship has to be a good thing. It’s also a sad reflection on our world that the only way to get your message across is to use violence, but thats just the way it has become. The “economic downturn” and now this, and the riots in Greece are a sure sign that capitalism cant carry on exploiting the worlds recourses, from what it looks like the Thai government have stopped this one, but i assure its only a matter of time before another comes, and another… They can’t suppress us forever and soon the people will rise.

Peace and let it be know AbcAnarchy fully supports the Red Shirts.
