June 01, 2010 — The purpose of the Free Gaza Freedom Flotilla was to break the Israeli blockade that has been imposed on Gaza, a form of collective punishment of 1.5 million Palestinians who are trying to survive at this point. Adam Shapiro in New York is a board member of the Free Gaza movement, one of the groups that coordinated the Freedom Flotilla. His wife Huwaida Arraf is the chairperson of the Free Gaza movement and is on the flotilla.

Eyewitness and victim recounts Israeli flotilla attack on an American boat and crew

June 01, 2010 — First reports coming out of Israeli violent acts against unarmed humanitarian aid workers. Huwaida Arraf, one of the Free Gaza Movement organizers, told CNN Israeli troops roughed her up when they responded aggressively to her ship, a smaller one in the flotilla that was near the Turkish vessel where the casualties occurred.

“They started coming after our ship,” she told CNN, “so we took off and they charged us also. Eventually, they overtook our ship and they used concussion grenades, sound bombs and pellets.”

She said the people on her ship tried to keep them off. She said they were told the vessel was American and the people aboard were unarmed.

But, she said “they started beating people. My head was smashed against the ground and they stepped on my head. They later cuffed me and put a bag over my head. They did that to everybody.”

Captain recounts Israeli attack on Flotilla

A Turkish captain, among a Gaza-bound international relief convoy which was violently attacked by Israel, details the assault which killed 20 civilians.

Captain Huseyin Tokalak said the Israeli Navy had threatened to sink his ship, Gazze, before Israeli commandos took over the vessel at gun point, the Reuters news agency reported.

“They pointed two guns to the head of each of us,” Tokalak told a news conference on Tuesday. “They were really interesting guns, like the ones you see in the movies.”
