Now, I know that progressive political thinkers are not supposed to touch the subject of the Sweet Hereafter. It seems that once you do that, many progressives will criticize…. As if believing in a Creator and a Universe is in opposition to revolutionary change. Hogwash! Read the sayings of Christianity’s top role model, Jesus. He consistently speaks of those who have great wealth and power, and what they must do to achieve a ticket to the “promised land” . It seems that most religions have already been taken over by the fundamentalists, fanatics and/or the hypocrites. They are the powerful or , more appropriately, represent the power elites who now control just about everything of importance in the world.

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) has offered an amendment to HR 5175, the Democracy is Strengthened by Casting Light on Elections (DISCLOSE) Act, that would prevent companies that receive federal leases to drill in the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) from spending unlimited amounts of money to influence campaigns and elections.
“The oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico has been brought to you by the excessive influence of the oil companies. Now, more than ever, we cannot afford to give the oil companies a free pass. They have already gotten too many,” said Kucinich.
The DISCLOSE Act is meant to prevent foreign interests and government contractors from improperly influencing campaigns and elections. Kucinich points out that companies with leases in the Outer Continental Shelf are not explicitly covered by the bill. The bill is considered to be the legislative response to Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission, in which the Supreme Court found that corporations and labor unions are free to spend unlimited amounts of money to fund independent expenditures to influence national, state and local elections. The DISCLOSE Act is expected to come before the House of Representatives in the next few weeks.

The last member of the international aid convoy, the Rachel Corrie MV, has not made it to its Gaza destination at the scheduled time mid-morning Saturday, according to local media reports.
The ship carrying 1,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid to the besieged Gaza Strip was hours earlier intercepted by Israeli naval forces some 50 kilometres off the coast in Mediterranean international waters. Israeli commandos have apparently blacked out satellite communications onboard the Rachel Corrie in a repeat of similar actions taken on the six other members of the Free Gaza Flotilla on 31 May. It is presumed that the Irish-owned Rachel Corrie is now in Israeli custody.

By forming their own banks, states too can tap into very low interest rates, and can buffer themselves from another Lehman-style credit collapse.
