Now, I know that progressive political thinkers are not supposed to touch the subject of the Sweet Hereafter. It seems that once you do that, many progressives will criticize…. As if believing in a Creator and a Universe is in opposition to revolutionary change. Hogwash! Read the sayings of Christianity’s top role model, Jesus. He consistently speaks of those who have great wealth and power, and what they must do to achieve a ticket to the “promised land” . It seems that most religions have already been taken over by the fundamentalists, fanatics and/or the hypocrites. They are the powerful or , more appropriately, represent the power elites who now control just about everything of importance in the world.
You see, when you factor it all down to the lowest common denominator, what it’s really all about is…… Wealth. In the United States, for example, we had over 16 million millionaires in 2007. Whenever you go into a box store, a bank, use a telephone, watch television, rent a movie, purchase health coverage ( if you can even afford it ) , drive a car….. Mega millionaires are at the end of those corporate establishments. I am not talking about someone who has perhaps one million dollars in the bank or stock portfolio. No, I refer to individuals with tens and hundreds of millions invested or lumped under some golden mattress. These are people who worry about what color their next boat will be, like you and I worry about our next mortgage or rental payment. When you slip a dollar into some girl scout donation canister, that’s how these super wealthy feel when they send a few thousand to a politician’s campaign. Simply put, They are not like us…. They OWN us! They own our mortgages, the gasoline we pump, the cars we drive…. You get my drift?
Recently, I had a deep philosophical conversation with a spiritually minded friend. We both agreed that things are so crazy, so out of whack now, that it can only prove that this life we are living must in fact be just a …..dream. As the great Hindu sages teach us, what really is of importance is What we do in this dream…. Not the dream itself. Have you ever just felt, when all the insane and irrational events are occurring around you, like some passenger sitting beside a railroad car window? Remember the last time you traveled by railroad and looked out that window, as life seemed to just pass on by you? You were just an observer and what was out there was not real., more like some…. dream. Well, I have some major insight for all the super wealthy among us. Regardless of whether they have similar beliefs or not about this dream and the sweet hereafter, what they do here will determine a great deal as to how things will be on the other side of the veil….. Trust me! I am not talking of retribution or vengeance, no…. Rather about Karma.: The total effect of a person’s actions and conduct during the successive phases of his or her existence. The bible says it as ‘ As ye sow so shall ye reap’. Jesus stated ‘ Easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a rich man to get to heaven’ .
Let us say that the median income for an American is $ 40, 000 a year, for argument sake. Let us say that a super wealthy American who earns ( has ) $10,000,000 decides to give away 10% to charity. That leaves 9 million dollars before taxes. After an accountant does his thing, and with today’s federal top rate of 35% ( in 1970 it was over 79% , by the way ) the rich person now has 6,750,000 dollars. The average American, after taxes, may have $ 32,000. If that rich person keeps the $ 6,750, 000 for personal or family use, and does not share it further, what karma would be created? Not for me to determine, however……. The universe is pretty much more sophisticated than this writer. All I can say to that Fat Cat CEO or heir to some fortune is ‘ It’s your soul…. Stupid! Save It!!!
