RICHARD C. HOAGLAND: “Gas explosion, 50 miles off Louisiana, that you can imagine. Think Mount St. Helens, underwater. What that would do is create a cloud of incredible toxic material, which would then drift with the winds over the shore, where there are millions of people…”
GEORGE NOORY: “What about a tsunami?”
R. Hoagland: “The next step is you would get a tsunami.”
Thousands of people from across the country marched through Detroit Tuesday afternoon to kick off the opening ceremony of the US Social Forum. The colorful, joyous, and sometimes raucous procession down Detroit’s Woodward Avenue included social movements and community organizations struggling for justice on everything from healthcare, the environment, fair trade, labor solidarity, immigrant rights, and racial profiling to Palestine solidarity, ending the wars, police brutality, and the devastating impact of the recession on people’s lives and sense of security. Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today released the following statement after President Obama replaced NATO and U.S. Commander in Afghanistan General Stanley McChrystal with General David Petraeus:
“The counterinsurgency strategy is falling apart. The doctrine of counterinsurgency has broken down just as the chain of command has broken down. The Karzai Administration is broken by corruption. Our budget is broken. General Petraeus has served his country honorably, but we can’t expect a different outcome from a new general with the same old strategy. The only way to repair this mess is to get out of Afghanistan.
“If Americans pulled back and started paying attention to this war, it would become even less popular,” a senior adviser to head of NATO ops in Afghanistan, General Stanley McChrystal (via Rolling Stone)

Eight and a half months ago, I published an open letter to you that critiqued General Stanley McChrystal’s plan for Afghanistan as well as his personal qualifications for his high position.
Noting that the General had produced an unsound plan and been insubordinate in making foolish statements to the international press and media, I advised you to dismiss him – in order for you to retain command authority over the armed services of the United States of America.
June 23, 2010 — I just wanted to finally put away the myth that Libertarian Socialist don’t believe in voluntarism and free association, when in fact, we premise our entire philosophy on it. However, sometimes it’s not emphasized because we don’t think that these alone can bring about a free society.
