Dennis Kucinich on Afghan Strategy: Bring our troops home

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today released the following statement after President Obama replaced NATO and U.S. Commander in Afghanistan General Stanley McChrystal with General David Petraeus:

“The counterinsurgency strategy is falling apart. The doctrine of counterinsurgency has broken down just as the chain of command has broken down. The Karzai Administration is broken by corruption. Our budget is broken. General Petraeus has served his country honorably, but we can’t expect a different outcome from a new general with the same old strategy. The only way to repair this mess is to get out of Afghanistan.

“What we have to show for our strategy is the death of over 1,100 U.S. soldiers and countless innocent civilians. The U.S. has not been made safer, and the Afghan people are left to fend for themselves between the failure of their government, and ours, to protect them.

“Bring our troops home.”

  6. Why is nothing said about how the US increased the opium trade, how we invaded the country to secure a pipeline route, to steal Afghanistan’s minteral wealth, and how Ossam Bin Liden was a creation of the CIA’s trying to get Russia out of Afghanistan?

The conclusion Kucinch draws is correct–let’s get the hell out now as opposed to waiting around for another ten years or so and throwing a few trillion down a rat hole.

The problem isn’t the Taliban, Russia, the resources, et cetera. The problem is the inherent lack of leadership manifest in a two party political system where it’s difficult to distinguish the Dumbcrats from the Repugnacans!
