Edward Bernays was called the ‘ Father of Public Relations ‘ ….. More appropriately, the ‘ Refiner of propaganda ‘ . So much so that Herr Goebbals, Hitler’s minister of manipulation, was an admirer and student of Bernay’s work. Bernays helped Woodrow Wilson sell United States’ entry into WW 1. He did the same for most of our country’s adventures into foreign lands AKA ‘ Police Actions ‘ . Even Eisenhower played Bernays’ skillful hand while President. What was the technique that made all this successful? As my friend Cheryl , a social scientist who specialized in polling , once told me: ‘ You give me the answer you want and I’ll create the polling questions . ‘
The legacy of Edward Bernays and his followers into the world of politics and advertising is easy to notice….. If you are not already the complacent citizen consumer they helped create. We live in a world where truth has been traded in for expediency. Selling us a war is as easy as selling us toothpaste. If one reads Zinn, Chomsky or Parenti , one realizes how almost every battle fought, every soldier or civilian killed, was created by propaganda. This column is not meant as a history lesson…. No, go and read the aforementioned scholars! Even the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was not only provoked by FDR’s administration, but we broke their code and knew they were coming. Dusko Popov, one of Britain’s highest level double agents, told our FBI, in early ‘ 41, that such an attack was in the works. Stinnet, in his book Day of Deceit, alleges that America’s pre knowledge was why our aircraft carriers were put out to sea before the attack. Bottom line: truth was sacrificed. The Nazis took propaganda and ‘ absence of truth ‘ to a higher level. They continually sold the German public lies and half truths to rally support for their conquests and scapegoating of the Jews. Sadly, such demonizing goes on today right here at home, with the labeling of all Muslims jihadists and Hispanics invading aliens. Of course, the most frequently termed devils are the welfare queen and dope peddling blacks that justify America’s practice of unofficial segregation in almost all of our cities and towns. The truth hurts, doesn’t it?
Today, the biggest lie this writer notices is that of our electoral system, by every legal and underhanded trick in the book, a Two Party Monopoly. Each election cycle, these two mammoths of hypocrisy manage to fool so many into not only voting for their cookie cutter candidates…. But actually volunteering to work for them! The Republicans, with their new ‘ Tea Party ‘ lemmings, go out into our communities spreading fear and lies about the Democrats. They call Obama and his party Marxists & Socialists, even as they join the Republicans in supporting the private health insurance industry against a ‘ Medicare for All ‘ socialist system. The Democrats vote with the Republicans for increased military spending ( breaking all records ) , bailing out the corrupt Wall Street bandit banks, staying put in Iraq and Afghanistan, continuing rendition ( AKA torture ) and keeping Guantanamo open….. Need I go on? You working stiffs should know just how terrible things are….. And no end in sight. It matters not who is in control of the White House or Congress….. It’s the lobbyists who pull the strings. Who owns the lobbyists? As the Ned Beatty character stated in the 1970s film classic Network: ‘ There are no nations or governments anymore… There is ITT, General Electric, General Motors…… ‘ Google the word Bilderbergs and learn what he meant.
Edward Bernays would have been proud how his successors are operating now. September 11th, 2001 ushered in an era where fabrication trumps truth …… Forever? The spin doctor replaces the scholar as fear, complacency, selfishness and lack of integrity flood our collective consciousness. Those of us who stand out in public and show our dissent for the hypocrisy and the Big Lie are tagged as unpatriotic and anarchistic. Yet, as the great man once said: ” The truth shall set you free! ” Wake up, sleeping beauties, and seek truth!
