In the first part of this series, I reviewed “what really happened” at  the famous meeting in Munich, Germany between the British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, and the German Chancellor Adolf Hitler.  As revealed in the 1995 book by Clement Leibovitz and Alvin Finkel, In Our Time: The Chamberlain-Hitler Collusion (New York: Monthly Review Press), based on British government documents released under the British Official Secrets Act and related materials, the real story was rather different from the “appeasement” tale that has been the standard treatment in the Western press since that time.

Because of the attacks on WikiLeaks and its founder there has been considerable media attention to the hacktivism practiced by supporters of WikiLeaks.  That has been manifested as cyber attacks on mainstream commercial websites that acted against WikiLeaks.  Hacktivism as retribution and strategy to gain political objectives is bound to become much more common.  And considering how voting, especially from the perspective of younger people, has been enormously disappointing as a means of reforming government and political systems worldwide, that seems appropriate.

Palestine: Yet People Celebrate (Christmas 2010) + Action Alert

Star of Bethlehem, Magi - wise men or wise kin...

In this time of year, people around the world celebrate. They celebrate the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem Palestine. They celebrate a birth that was meant to propagate a set of ideals to make the world a better place. 2010 years later, that same birthplace is plagued by a regime that practices the exact opposite of those ideals. Bethlehem is surrounded by a racist wall of biblical proportions, by regime which is racist to biblical proportions. Yet people celebrate.

But that is OK. The people of Palestine also celebrate. They need to, as any other people would need to celebrate. After all it is the season to make exceptions. In this season, people make exceptions when it comes to their spending, to their diets, to the way they treat each other. So it is only logical to make an exception by putting an effort for the land, the homes and people of the birthplace of Christmas… for justice in Palestine…

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year

The larger tax-cut deal Obama made with congressional Republicans contains a built in time bomb to help blow Social Security away, as was pointed out by Senate Democrats and other backers of the only public pension and disability plan seniors have, Social Security, which started paying in 1940, 70 years ago, thanks to FDR.

Obama, with the devil at his back, put in place a nearly 30 percent cut in the payroll tax, by reducing the portion for Social Security from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent. He allowed it to expire in a year and that means workers will see a nearly 50 percent increase in payroll taxes as the rate comes back in place, which will be seen by and described by workers as a tax hike. The “small” cut is going to cost an estimated $120 billion per year.

Since its founding in December 2006, WikiLeaks, which was established as, essentially, a secure information clearing house for whistleblowers around the world to provide sensitive information, some of which would then be released to the public, and which was reportedly set up by “Chinese dissidents, journalists, mathematicians and start-up company technologists, from the US, Taiwan, Europe, Australia and South Africa,” has declared that its “primary interest is in exposing oppressive regimes in Asia, the former Soviet bloc, Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East, but we also expect to be of assistance to people of all regions who wish to reveal unethical behaviour in their governments and corporations.” Continue reading
