Haiti: Mirlanda’s story + Nixon, the boy who survived Haiti’s earthquake

https://dandelionsalad.wordpress.com/

msfuk | January 12, 2011

Six months after the January earthquake, photographer Nicola Vigilanti travelled to an MSF reconstructive surgery in Haiti. There he met Mirlanda, an inspiring 10 year-old girl who lost her mother and her leg in in the earthquake. Vigilanti recorded her slow recovery, as she received treatment for a crushed arm and learned to walk again with the use of a prosthetic limb. Despite the severity of her injuries and restricted mobility, Mirlanda always continued smiling and never let the fact that she had lost a leg stop her joining in with the other children in the hospital, even to play football.

Corey Pein recounts the creation of the recently launched groundbreaking site warisbusiness.com, a nonpartisan site covering military contracting, the global arms trade and the lobby, and how he began the project with two assumptions: The first- a lot of people are making money from war, while enjoying the comforts of anonymity (such people were once plainly called profiteers), and the second: Privatizing war inevitably prolongs it, creating what economists call a “perverse incentive.” Mr. Pein discusses the bought out generals and the militarization of the economy, and the latest on the ‘Rent-A-Generals’ exposé. He talks about scandals such as Mina Corp and the subsequent cover up, US Embassies as marketing arms of military corporations, the win-win outcome of elections for the Pentagon contractors and arms makers, Wikileaks, and more!

The shooter of Congresswoman Giffords acted as a domestic suicide terrorist on the political “battleground” of American politics. His YouTube postings and “goodbye” phone messages are ominously reminiscent of the traditional farewell videos of Islamist martyrs.

The deadly combination of suicide terrorists’ mental instability, their political and religious indoctrination, and readily available bomb materials and firearms explode in violence almost every day somewhere in the Middle-East.

The Federal Reserve was set up by bankers for bankers, and it has served them well. Out of the blue, it came up with $12.3 trillion in nearly interest-free credit to bail the banks out of a credit crunch they created. That same credit crisis has plunged state and local governments into insolvency, but the Fed has now delivered its ultimatum: there will be no “quantitative easing” for municipal governments.

An original investigative report by Earth Focus and UK’s Ecologist Film Unit looks at the risks of natural gas development in the Marcellus Shale. From toxic chemicals in drinking water to unregulated interstate dumping of potentially radioactive waste that experts fear can contaminate water supplies in major population centers including New York City, are the health consequences worth the economic gains?

Back from Afghanistan, Kathy Kelly, Eric Stoner, and Mike Ferner make clear the needless tragedy of death, maiming, and destruction going on daily that the American People need to face and reject. Moderated by actress-activist Vinie Burrows, they negate Obama’s claim the US is on track to meet its goals or even making progress, pointing to the unacceptable murder, torn bodies, destroyed buildings from our cruel empire’s bombing, rockets and shooting. They talk of Afghan children and adults challenging the US logic of killing and maiming their family members and destroying their homes and other structures without good reason. Event January 7, 2011 at All Souls Unitarian Church in Manhattan, sponsored by their Peace and Justice Task Force and Grandmothers Against The War, particularly Joan Wile. Camera: Joe Friendly
