The number of people living in poverty is growing at a faster rate than the world’s population. What do we make of this?

Arguing Libya
On July 9 I took part in a demonstration in front of the White House, the theme of which was “Stop Bombing Libya”. The last time I had taken part in a protest against US bombing of a foreign country, which the White House was selling as “humanitarian intervention”, as they are now, was in 1999 during the 78-day bombing of Serbia. At that time I went to a couple of such demonstrations and both times I was virtually the only American there. The rest, maybe two dozen, were almost all Serbs. “Humanitarian intervention” is a great selling device for imperialism, particularly in the American market. Americans are desperate to renew their precious faith that the United States means well, that we are still “the good guys”.

The debt ceiling crisis can be averted by enforcing the Fourteenth Amendment, which mandates the government to pay its debts already incurred, including pensions. That means Social Security, which IS an “entitlement,” in the original sense of the word. We’re entitled to it because we’ve paid for it with taxes.

In the summer of ‘84, I took my first trip out of the USA; really. I was coming out of a terrible relationship and I saved up to go to a Club Med resort for one week. I believe it was in Martinique, and unlike 95% of the other vacationers, I went alone. Well, after two days at the place the oppressive heat and humidity, with no AC in our room, and the bugs just got the best of me. I didn’t care how much it cost me; I was going home… and fast! Norway’s cold-blooded mass killer Anders Behring Breivik claimed in a closed court hearing that he was a member of two cells in a far-right organisation committed to bringing about a cultural revolution in Europe.
The claim by the 32-year-old son of a diplomat implies that he had accomplices in carrying out his deadly mission in which at least 76 people were killed in a twin bomb and gun attack in and around the Norwegian capital, Oslo, last Friday.

Being a cynical person to begin with, I must admit that the wool was completely pulled over my eyes and dare to say that I was incredibly naive when I placed my vote for what has turned out to be one of the worst Presidents to ever hold office. Each day, impossible as it may seem, things get worse and worse. All anyone had to do to realize (from the beginning of this joke of a Presidency), was to observe who this President has surrounded himself with in his cabinet and advisers from day one (Geithner, and Summers especially).
