Ongoing unrest in the UK-News Analysis-08-08-2011

People kicking windows of shops, looting, police deployed with dogs grabbing people on ground and making arrests: these are just some of the scenes that erupted first in Tottenham and then spread to many Burroughs of London.

It became evident that the peaceful protests against the shooting death of a black father of 4, Mark Duggan, was the spark that brought out the anger of many residents, which as one city councilor put it, was due to austerity and budget cuts: Is this the beginning of wide social unrest in the UK?

  5. Live from the UK streets. One citizen writes at Tue, 9 Aug 2011 04:28:07 -0400 (EDT):

“The situation is far worse than you’ll see in the national press. Locally there were several incidents last night that are only reported in the local press. There are riot police in several major shopping areas today, areas that haven’t seen any trouble yet.

Members of the public are calling for military intervention, curfews, baton rounds and water cannons. There were 6000 police on duty in London yesterday, far more than normal. Tonight there will be 16,000, drafted in from all over the country. I suggest “the rest of the country” beware tonight.

Football matches are being called off, and there is a cricket test match due to start in Birmingham (Edgbaston) tomorrow. Leafy suburban Ealing (West London) was trashed last night. Still, at least we are safe from “terrorists” “.

    • The London rebels needs weapons to defend themselves from Cameron oppression.. Maybe Libya can drop weapons for them now they have also recognised them…
It is really a funny drama, when some pyschopaths never think of the consequencies o their actions… just because their selfishness and evil blinds them..
Now Cameron should taste some of his pill and his so-called ‘Civilian’ protection, and destruction of others lives without feelings.
The truth is that this is only a symptom… Real reward of UK past and continued evil against others will be coming right back at them soon..
Just look at that arogant pyscopath Cameron, a man with no experience of hard life, he cut everything for the poor to settle his evil private bank looters. Now he will use part of the same money he loot from these poor to pay for police to attack these poor people! What kind of world are we living in?
If it happen in Libya, Cameron, Fogh, Sarkozy and co. will term it ‘legitimate’ now same happen in London, they want to call them ‘criminal’… Judge for yourself if you have faculty

      • The corporate media is responsible, too. Where are they when there are peaceful protests? They don’t cover them. Now, once the police get involved and there are clashes or arrests, the media show up. That is why civil disobedience works better over peaceful protests. And this in no way condones violence or burning of small shops and people’s homes.
