Journalist and Reason contributor Michael Tracey is covering New York’s Occupy Wall Street as it’s happening. Above is footage he shot as the protesters marched through the street of Manhattan and had various stand-offs with the New York Police Department. Tracey himself reports being punched in the shoulder while filming.
In the above video, around the 1.40 mark, a white-shirted NYPD officer decks a protester in a green shirt (how the incident started is unclear). Reason.tv’s Meredith Bragg edited the video above from about 20 minutes of footage.

‘Occupy’ protester brutally attacked by cop
Felix Rivera-Pitre, a demonstrator with “Occupy Wall Street,” withstood a dramatic assault by a New York police officer on Friday morning during a march with thousands of others.
Captured on video, the attack appears to have been unprovoked, and Pitre claims the blow he received ripped one of his earrings out, drawing blood. He’s also HIV positive, and he told Gothamist that the officer who hit him should get tested following the incident.
In an interview later that day with The Street, Pitre said he did nothing to provoke the attack aside from walking in the street with other demonstrators.

Since the video doesn’t show what initiated the altercation it is easy to jump to conclusions.
If the officer was struck first, he had every right to defend himself…
Do you really believe that a policeMAN would defend himself from a woman (or a man) by punching her/him in the face? There are other methods of self-defense and he should have been trained to use them, if that were the case.
That officer (and I use the term loosely) deserves to be locked in a cage!
Anyone catch the officer’s name? –Mike
