However fortunate are we who live in the Southeastern corner of Volusia County, Florida. Imagine, with all the apathy throughout America, we actually have three ongoing weekly peace demonstrations. The numbers, sadly, are too small for this writer’s and this activist’s taste. Yet, look at the few who do come out, and have come out for going on eight years:
- John is 83 and a cancer survivor. Yet, he comes down every Tuesday and stands with yours truly outside of the Port Orange library… our signs in hand.
- Walt is 80 something and has more poor health than can be mentioned. Yet, he trudges down each Tuesday afternoon to stand for Peace on the corner of Ridgewood and Dunlawton. Charlie, just 80, recently had a stroke that has kept him from his spot on that same corner. Jerry and Joanne are battling the fires that threaten their home outside of town… yet they find the time to come out and stand. The others who show up each and every week, Robert and Lynne, are both 60 something idealists who will never give in to the war mentality that shakes this nation from its roots.
- Phil and Kathy and her son Bret show up each Thursday on the corner of Nova and Speedway Blvd. Kathy is with Code Pink and has her own poor health issues. Phil is an accountant, yet takes more time away from his work than he should so as to be a witness against the sins of our American empire. A few of Phil and Kathy’s friends come down to join them each Thursday… but never are there enough good souls to spread the truth.
America needs folks who transcend this two party ‘One Party‘ confidence game. America needs the truth about what our nation is doing in all our names throughout the world. America needs more citizens like those mentioned above to come out and stand tall as patriots for a better, fairer country.
‘Blessed are the peacemakers….’
