The Occupation of the American Mind

The Occupation of the American Mind on May 30, 2018

Over the past few years, Israel’s ongoing military occupation of Palestinian territory and repeated invasions of the Gaza strip have triggered a fierce backlash against Israeli policies virtually everywhere in the world — except the United States. The Occupation of the American Mind takes an eye-opening look at this critical exception, zeroing in on pro-Israel public relations efforts within the U.S.

Narrated by Roger Waters and featuring leading observers of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and U.S. media culture, the film explores how the Israeli government, the U.S. government, and the pro-Israel lobby have joined forces, often with very different motives, to shape American media coverage of the conflict in Israel’s favor. From the U.S.-based public relations campaigns that emerged in the 1980s to today, the film provides a sweeping analysis of Israel’s decades-long battle for the hearts, minds, and tax dollars of the American people in the face of widening international condemnation of its increasingly right-wing policies.

Narrated by Roger Waters / Featuring Amira Hass, M.J. Rosenberg, Stephen M. Walt, Noam Chomsky, Rula Jebreal, Henry Siegman, Rashid Khalidi, Rami Khouri, Yousef Munayyer, Norman Finkelstein, Max Blumenthal, Phyllis Bennis, Norman Solomon, Mark Crispin Miller, Peter Hart, and Sut Jhally.

  14. I saw this when it was first released; a powerful indictment indeed.

As I see it now, the future of Israel’s Palestinian “re-occupation” is entirely in the hands of those enlightened and enviably courageous Israelis themselves, who have come to terms with the falsehoods and the fanatical mythicism of post-Islamic Zion. The more Palestinians express their frustration and pain through desperate, symbolic demonstrations, the more repressive the extreme right-wing faction’s response becomes.

Religious politics and polemic is frankly a contradiction in terms. So long as religion divides ‘our’ world, politics will remain an impotent, spent force ~ a post-facto apology for a superficial and partisan status quo, a pseudo-spiritual & morally compromised quasi-ecosystem that is not ecologically or socio-biologically viable at all.

The health of an emergent solar-centred cosmopolitan, socially diverse and biologically informed planetary consensus, depends exclusively on our capacity for ethical fulfillment and creative intelligence. Once we accept and acknowledge that we all have these fundamental spiritual rights; that we are all entitled to determine our own metaphysical outcomes; that genuine symbolic knowledge exists for us to explore freely and to express our authentic nature(s,) without restriction or fear of repression and intimidation ~ then we may discover the latent certainty that assures us of that innate right to life and liberty.

The superannuated reflex that still prevents us from calling the bluff of “authority” has to be challenged directly, through our capacity to simply be ourselves, and make (educated) choices. You don’t have to ask permission to live a decent life; it is your/our birthright. If you find the present constitution(s) inadequate ~ draft your own. No two human beings are the same, not even identical twins. A natural forest does not consist of cloned trees, it is an exquisitely complex adaptive organism.

We have to be optimistic; but we must also be vigilant and courageous enough to call out the lies of governments and vested interests that, drunk on artifice and purloined force, threaten to undermine and extinguish the possibility of the beauty of life. Real power resides in truth. truth realized, lived and shared. That is the only occult force we need to concern ourselves with; everything else is falsehood, artifice, delusion and vanity.
