On Saturday, September 15, 2007, the ANSWER Coalition, a progressive antiwar group, sponsored a Mass March and Die-In in Washington, D.C. Its purpose was to raise the consciousness of enough people in this country to stop the illegal and immoral Iraq War and to prevent the Bush-Cheney Gang from launching a war against Iran. The rally took place in Lafayette Park, just north of the White House, where a number of prominent speakers were heard.
One of the speakers was Fred Mason. He is the President of the Maryland and District of Columbia, AFL-CIO. He said: “Working people want this war to end.” He added that Congress should “cut off the funding and bring the troops home.” For additional details, and updates, on the Sept. 15th rally, and for the exact number of arrests, please see: http://www.ANSWERCoalition.org.
One of the speakers was Tina Richard, CEO of Grassroots America. A Marine Mom, she read a very moving poem to the crowd from her son, Cloy, an Iraq War Veteran. It was entitled, “A Word is Worth a Thousand Pictures.” When she finished the poem, Ms. Richards demanded: “All power to the people!”
One of the speakers was Gloria La Riva. She is with the “National Committee to Free the Cuban Five.” Ms. La Riva said: “George W. Bush is a terrorist for his [Iraq] war…He is also a terrorist for the U.S. government policy which he has intensified against the country of Cuba.”
One of the speakers Peta Lindsay. She is with the ANSWER oganization and goes to school at Howard U. in the D.C. Ms. Lindsay said: “This War [in Iraq] is a war against women…George Bush is the world’s biggest criminal.”

Impeach Bush
Bush’s police suppress Sept. 15 press conference
While the momentum for the Sept. 15 Peace/Impeachment demonstration grows, the Bush Administration is going to extraordinary lengths to suppress the mobilizing for this mass demonstration.
Less than 18 hours ago, National Park Service Police turned a September 15 Press Conference, held in front of the White House, into a chaotic scene. On the pretext that there was no permit for a three foot long folding table that the media placed their microphones on, the police intervened in the middle of the press conference to announce that it was an unpermitted activity. Three people were arrested and are still being held in jail. They include Adam Kokesh, an Iraq war veteran; Tina Richards of Grassroots America; and Ian Thompson an ANSWER Coalition organizer.
The Parks Police even rode a horse directly into the crowd of reporters and shocked onlookers. The National Parks Police is an agency in the Interior Department whose Secretary is a member of George W. Bush’s cabinet. In recent weeks September 15 organizers have been fined more than $30,000 for putting up posters promoting the September 15 March on Washington.
We encourage ImpeachBush.org members to circulate this email and the important story from the AFP wire story that documents this outrageous assault against Free Speech rights by the Bush Administration. At the end of this email we are also enclosing a link to a video on YouTube that shows some part of the suppression of the September 15 press conference yesterday.
Bush and company want to prevent people from coming out for a mass action led by Iraq war veterans and their families that will expose his war propaganda as a lie. The Administration wants to suppress the growing movement for impeachment. This is a showdown of great magnitude.
Please make every effort to come to Washington DC on September 15. We will not be intimidated. Join the tens of thousands who are coming to Washington, DC on September 15. Buses, car caravans and vans are coming from more than 100 cities.
If you cannot personally come you can help by making a generous donation. The buses, literature, posters, stage, sound and other expenses are immense. Many have already contributed. Please do your part and make a contribution today by clicking this link.

Police break up anti-war meeting in Washington
WASHINGTON (AFP) – Mounted police charged in to break up an outdoor press conference and demonstration against the Iraq war in Washington on Thursday, arresting three people, organizers and an AFP reporter said.
“The police suppressed the press conference. In the middle of the speeches, they grabbed the podium” erected in a park in front of the White House for the small gathering, Brian Becker, national organizer of the ANSWER anti-war coalition, told AFP.
“Then, mounted police charged the media present to disperse them,” Becker said.
The charge caused a peaceful crowd of some 20 journalists and four or five protestors to scatter in terror, an AFP correspondent at the event in Lafayette Square said. No one appeared to have been hurt.
Three people — Tina Richards, the mother of a marine who did two tours of duty in Iraq; Adam Kokesh, a leader of the Iraq Veterans Against the War group; and lawyer Ian Thompson, who is an organizer for ANSWER in Los Angeles — were arrested, Becker said.
The ANSWER coalition is trying to rally support for an anti-war demonstration in Washington that is due to take place on September 15.
Last month, the movement was threatened with a fine of at least 10,000 dollars unless it removed posters in the city announcing the September 15 march.
Washington city authorities have said the posters had to come down because they were stuck on with adhesive that did not meet city regulations.
“At our demonstration today we were showing the media that the paste we use conforms to the rules,” Becker said. “One of our activists was making a speech when the police barged in and grabbed the podium. At that point, Tina Richards started to put up a poster, so they arrested her and two others.”
“This strategy of suppression has not worked. We expect many tens of thousands of people” in Washington for the September 15 anti-war demonstration, he said.
The march has been timed to coincide with the release of a report by the US military commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, and will be part of a week of protests led by veterans of the Iraq war.
A petition calling for the impeachment of President George W. Bush, allegedly carrying one million signatures and endorsed by former US attorney general Ramsey Clark, will also be submitted to officials during the week’s activities, ANSWER has told AFP.

The Smirking Chimp
Sep 4 2007
I have dropped a couple comments recently about setting up a telephone protest to coincide with the the massive 9/15 Iraq Moratorium Protest. These have received a few positive comments in return.
I think it would be a popular idea if communicated to enough people fast enough. Thus, my next step is to post the formal suggestion. Are YOU interested in protesting the Bush Administration but cannot get to the 9/15/07 Protest in DC?
Most people cannot go to this. Lots of people can and thats as it should be but America is huge and transportation and days off from work are scarce for a lot of people. Most people that really want to go likely cannot.
There is a way to join in in solidarity and it’s pretty easy.
One problem with protesting in a physical location is it is usually a day or a weekend and then it disperses.
IF the Old Media Cartel wasn’t so focused on minimizing protests these would likely be sufficient, but the OMC does a serious job of underreporting the numbers and limiting photographic evidence of a protests’ size. They actively work against the people they are supposed to inform.
The Telephone Protest
I say one very viable solution is a “telephone protest”. We all agree to call certain political offices from one date and time to another. That’s all.
I like it because it’s simple. And cheap.
For example, I have more rollover minutes than I know what to do with. I can lay siege to some government phones for many hours at no actual cost. Lots of Americans can, I think, join in this.
I am posting this at Daily Kos, Smirking Chimp and Chimpster Nation, Diatribune. Others – please feel free to post this other places you think are going to be responsive. E-mail me and I’ll give you the article’s html so you can just paste it into the submission box of your preferred site.
The Million Phone March
I have sent an e-mail to The Million Phone March an organization I remembered and searched for today. I have asked them what they think. If this will get off the ground I will post their feedback, if any.
Dates: 9/10/07 – 9/28/07
1: The Phone Protest of 9/2007 should start on the 10th and last through the rest of the month. The protest should be ongoing when the People arrive in DC for the protest on the 15th. This phase, if it is sufficiently robust, should be an excellent preface to the massive turnout on the weekend of the 15th.
2: Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 12:00 Noon and 1:00pm to 5:00 pm for the phone siege. E-mails and faxes – no limitations, no mercy. Flood ’em.
3: The Phone Protest should continue until the 28th. From the 10th to the 28th is likely long enough to really have gotten attention and, if sustained this long could have a very significant impact.
Phones, Faxes and E-mails.
I am figuring that at first we target
Message in a nutshell
Flood the e-mail and faxes with these 3 basic messages:
* IMPEACH !!
* US out of Iraq !!
* No Attack on Iran !!
Note: Be polite and brief. I will be on good behavior. If I can do it, most others can.
Diversity and Tolerance
So often when a protest happens, one finds all sorts of “causes” coming out of the woodwork. This is fine for a variety of reasons but we cannot be distracted by the diversity. If you want to use the duration of the protest to focus on your pet issues (mine’s cannabis relegalization) go for it. I am not going to be focused on anything but the 3 messages above.
Of course your message is OK too; I merely suggest these as a away to consolidate the message. 3 simple ones are best for addressing government agencies. (I was told this by a Fulton County commissioner when I was in her office protesting the elimination of mental health services here about 5 years ago. She said: Keep it simple and no more than 3 points.)
Dare to have fun!
Oh… almost forgot. We are currently “Officially in Historic Times”.
The Bush 43 Administration is the most corrupt in American history, without peer. It has obscured the massive criminality of the Reagan Administration and makes Richard Nixon seem like a disgruntled little boy selling lemonade on a corner.
This is the context for your participation in making a phone protest work as intended. If it works even moderately, it will be a success and it will be part of history. That’s a pretty good deal for a few cell minutes.
And I so totally encourage you to think that this could be a LOT of FUN. IF we can all get a 2 and a half week Phone Siege flooding targeted offices with work-disrupting levels of calls it will be fun to be part of it and to do it.
Assessing the Surge
It doesn’t have to be more than noticeable for this to be effective. It doesn’t have to obliterate their communication ability, though that would be good.
If it just complicates their communication tasks a few times a day it will be noticeable.
Here are 2 goals to listen for in your efforts:
* exasperation in the answerer’s voice.
* Busy signals for long periods of time. That will indicate this is going desirably.
Here is the 3rd goal that I don’t expect to be met:
* Congress people or their aides posting reactions on Daily Kos or other sites asking for the phone action to stop. That would be perfect.
I am posting this now and will post follow-ups as the 10 and the 15th approach. I would certainly love for others to post their own works on this issue.
Once it starts – if it actually takes off – we can post some “liveblogging” or open threads to discuss particular incidents (busy signals, exasperated office staffers, bright ideas, new phone numbers).
Thank you for reading and I hope you will choose to do some phone calling sometime this month.

A group of Richmond High School students produced the documentary “Journey for Justice – Crossing the Line” about the School of the Americas and their trip to the November Vigil to close it down.
Watch the Trailer: http://www.soaw.org/article.php?id=1372
The School of the Americas (SOA), renamed to “Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation,” is a U.S. military training school for Latin American soldiers that has left a trail of blood and suffering throughout Latin America.
The SOA has trained over 64,000 Latin American soldiers in courses such as counterinsurgency, psychological warfare, military intelligence and interrogation tactics. Graduates of the school have been consistently linked to human rights violations and to the suppression of popular movements in the Americas.
Among those targeted by SOA graduates are educators, union organizers, religious workers, student leaders, and others who work for the rights of the poor. The SOA is the Pentagon’s way of controlling the armies of Latin America with the goal of controlling the people and their resources. The SOA provides the military muscle to keep the racist system of domination and exploitation in place – benefiting a few at the expense of many. Hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans have been tortured, raped, assassinated, “disappeared”, massacred, and forced into refuge by those trained at the School of Assassins.

Summer of Love ‘07
By Cindy Sheehan
July 6th, 2007
The other day I came out of my short retirement due to yet another Bush flagrant abuse of power. We decided that we would walk from Atlanta to DC to gather a people’s movement for humanity. The longer BushCo are in office the less chance we have of recovering the heart and soul of our nation, saving our soldiers and the people of Iraq and Afghanistan, and saving the planet from corporate and individual waste and pollution. Impeachment, removal from office, and in a perfect world: incarceration for the criminals against humanity, are urgent and necessary steps that need to be taken today.Since the announcement of the Walk, circumstances have changed. Rev. Lennox Yearwood is not going to have his hearing for Conduct Unbecoming until the end of August, and we were going to begin our walk after his hearing on July 12th in Macon, GA. So consequently, we are going to begin our Journey on July 10th in Crawford, Texas.
Our Journey will take us through places such as Ft. Benning, GA, and New Orleans where Bush Crimes have had such a deeply detrimental affect on people. Torture and the continued criminal lack of help for the people of the Gulf States are two of BushCo’s more heinous crimes.
Our Journey will also take us to House Judiciary committee members’ offices where we will sit-in and demand that they institute Articles of Impeachment against Bush and Cheney immediately. On July 23rd, we will be in Congressman John Conyers’ office to encourage him to take the lead on impeachment. A sit-in in his office is possible and likely.
The US part of our Journey will end in New York City where on July 27th we will stage a demonstration in front of the UN to highlight the refugee crisis in the Middle East caused by the Bush High Crime Cabal. There are millions of people displaced by the atrocity in Iraq and, no matter what former US Ambassador and leading neo-con war criminal, John Bolton says: the US does owe the people of Iraq more than we can ever repay. The very least we owe them, though, is a relatively safe country to live in and basic human rights like: homes, food, clean water and medical care.
On July 29th, we will be re-creating the Summer of Love and hold a “Gather-in of Hearts” in Central Park with leading activists and musical entertainment. Proceeds will go to Iraqi Refugees and for medical supplies for Iraqi hospitals.
When we are finished in NYC, a few of us will be Journeying to Amman, Jordan to help refugees in Jordan and Syria. We will visit the camps to assess the depth of the humanitarian crisis that is causing so many children to unnecessarily and tragically suffer. We have so much in this country. How can we allow our brothers and sisters to go without basics? Who can sleep comfortably at night and enjoy three square meals a day when other people only have moldy bread to eat and are starving? Do you think of the people of Iraq and the refugees literally dying of thirst when you go to turn on your tap for plentiful, clean water? Our animals here in the US are treated better than many humans on our planet. As MLK, Jr said in his speech at the Riverside Church on April 04, 1967: “My government is the biggest purveyor of violence.” Our government has killed enough people to populate many small states in the US and has forced millions more to flee their places of birth. Our governments will never change, but our hearts can and we can do much to alleviate suffering and change the world.
Since I announced the Journey for Humanity, I have received a lot of support and encouragement, and many “I’ll be with you in spirits.” We appreciate your moral support, but we need your bodies and your dollars if you can’t participate. Our world is in an environmental, political and humanitarian state of emergency at this point and participation in a People’s Movement for Change, Justice and Humanity is becoming mandatory by our membership in the Human Race.
Our route and flyer for the “Gather-in of Hearts” is posted at Camp Casey Peace Institute. Donations can also be made there. Visit our MySpace page and be our friend!
We also need volunteers in cities along the route to help coordinate rallies/actions and food/ housing for walkers. To volunteer, e-mail Dede Miller at tiggerloli@aol.com or call: 562-912-5838 (we don’t take blocked calls.)
